Research Areas Keywords: image processing, local detectors / descriptors, object detection and template matching, graphbased representations, performance evaluation and groundtruthing, performance characterization. Abstract. My research areas deal with the image processing systems and their performance evaluation. My ongoing research is related to image processing with a particular interest on local detectors / descriptors, object detection and template matching methods. My Postdoc and PhD work were focused on performance evaluation of image processing systems and graph-based representations mainly. My application domains concern document image analysis and graphics recognition including symbol and logo recognition, comics copyright protection, text/graphics separation in maps and retrieval of ornamental letters.

Calypod: From 2007 to 2009, I have created and supported an international research group called Calypod in collaboration with four researchers6. Calypod was a research group interested with the image retrieval topic applied to printed old books. Especially, the main topic of Calypod concerns the processing of graphical parts inside these books like headpieces, pictures or ornamental letters. Calypod investigated the use of computer science techniques in order to pre-process, to segment, to recognize, to retrieve or to match these graphical parts from these books. The Calypod group is an open initiative engaged by different researchers working on these topics, including around 15 members coming from 8 institutes. The people of Calypod group came from the computer science domain but also from human one including different partner such as the CESR (Tours, France), the BCU (Lausanne, Switzerland) and the CES (Glasgow, UK). On the 13th of September 2007, a general meeting of the Calypod group has been organize (see before) resulting in the following publication. E. Baudrier and al. Retrieval of the ornaments from the Hand-Press Period: an overview. ICDAR, 2009.

More information about the Calypod working group can be found on the link http://calypod.free.fr/ International Symbol Recognition Contest (ISRC): In 2009 and 2011, I have been involved in the coorganization7 of the International Symbol Recognition Contest (ISRC). The ISRC has been aiming to bring together researchers working on Symbol recognition. Its goal is to analyze the performance of symbol recognition methods on several types of test data, according to a number of parameters and constraints involved in real-world applications. Thus, the main goal of the contest is not to determine the “best” symbol recognition method, but to help in getting a deeper understanding of the characteristics, pros and cons of various approaches. New editions of the contests have been organized in the context of GREC’2009 and GREC’2011. The evaluation framework for these editions was similar in part to the one used in previous GREC’2003, GREC’2005 and GREC’2007 with extensions concerning some aspects of the test data: - “in context” symbol recognition (symbols cropped from real drawings, not perfectly segmented and thus, including parts of their surrounding areas in the drawing) - an addition to past competitions dedicated to “Symbol Spotting”. This new challenge consists in the recognition of non-segmented symbols, connected to their environment.

Participation in Research Projects During my different research positions (PhD, research fellow, assistant professor, etc.) I have participated to different research projects. The next table resumes these projects in terms of period, length, partners and funding level. DOD-DIComp (Document Image Compression) project in interested with the compression domain. To achieve high quality document reproduction and rendering, documents must be scanned at a minimum level of resolution. Practical systems for processing document images generally require document compression methods that achieve high compression ratios with very low distortion. The project is interested with optimization of compression standards, with a particular interest on JPEG, from a time processing and image quality assessment point of view when applied to document images.
