Certifications BVQI certifies first two companies to BVQI Occupational Health and Safety Standard Akzo Nobel Chemicals B.V. and Kors Hydrocarbons are the first companies in the Netherlands to have their Occupational Health and Safety System certified against the new BVQI SafetyCert® standard. Launched by BVQI in September 1998, SafetyCert® aims to control and express adequate and reliable care for the safety and health inside companies. It was developed as a direct result of the wishes and requirements of certain industry sectors. In the Netherlands there has been a great deal of interest in the SafetyCert® standard and, on an international level, there has been a noticeable increase in the demand for the integration of Occupational Health and Safety Systems into existing management systems. The SafetyCert® standard

has an open structure and is highly adaptable to existing structures. During the certification ceremony on 18th December Mr Ian Day, Chairman of BVQI, handed over the first SafetyCert® certificates to the proud companies and stressed the importance of both companies now demonstrating their conformity to SafetyCert® to the world. The BVQI audit report on both companies concluded that they had conformed to the criteria of the standard in a most exceptional way.

BVQI certifies Kidney Centre in Pakistan

Siemens receives ISO 14001 certification

BVQI Dubai has recently certified the Kidney Centre in Pakistan to ISO 9002. The Kidney Centre, based in Karachi, is one of the few facilities in Pakistan which has been entirely funded by the community and provides total care for renal diseases by introducing modern methods of diagnosis and treatment and making these facilities within the reach of needy and poor patients.

Christian Vonner, NSE of BVQI Hungary, presented the Managing Director of Siemens in Hungary, Dr Beke-Martos, with his ISO 14001 certificate last November.

Both the President and Prime Minister of Pakistan have sent their congratulations to the Centre, which is the first hospital to achieve certification in Pakistan.

Siemens received ISO 14001 certification for the design, development, production and selling of public telecommunications networks and related services.

l e a r s I BVQI Certifications For the first time ever: milk and milk products from dairy cattle farms certified to ISO 9002 by BVQI Israel An ISO 9002 certificate has recently been issued - for the first time ever - to a dairy cattle farm where cattle are raised for milk production. The certification was carried out by BVQI Israel, in co-operation with Tnuva Dairies, the largest milk producer in Israel. Tnuva is striving towards formulating quality standards for dairy cattle farms with a view to improving the production systems for milk and milk products. BVQI Israel has joined the innovative process of ISO 9000 implementation in dairy cattle farms. In the course of the certification process, BVQI Israel applied the strict criteria established by international accreditation bodies. In order to meet these criteria, a veterinary surgeon with broad experience in cattle raising, and who was trained as an auditor by BVQI, joined the team and led the certification process. A comprehensive analysis of the quality management system applied in cattle farms was conducted during the certification process according o ISO requirements. The ISO 9002 requirements were translated into terminology used in relation to cattle farms. The cows, for example, were defined as “production equipment” and the cows’ feeding and state of health were defined under “process control”. In the course of certifying the cattle farms, new initiatives have originated that were successfully

implemented and that have contributed to improving and streamlining the production processes, making a remarkable contribution also to improving milk quality. Looking into the future, it may well be that retail stores will install separate refrigerators displaying milk and milk products originating in ISO 9000 certified cattle farms.

Accreditations BVQI received five accreditations at the beginning of 1999: SA8000

accreditation from CEPAA (see front page), ISO 9000 accreditation from the Korean Accreditation Board (KAB) and O.A.A. in Argentina, BS7799 Information Security accreditation from UKAS and ENAC accreditation for ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems certification in Spain.

BVQI client wins Quality Award One of the winners of the 1998 Swedish Quality Awards was Bulten Trading AB, a BVQI Customer for ISO 9002 and QS-9000. Bulten Trading AB purchases, stocks and distributes fasteners for the Scandinavian Motor Industry and its sub-contractors. The Chairman of Bulten AB, Ake Nordin, said “For Bulten, which has the automotive industry as its biggest customer, this award is invaluable. Through the Swedish Quality Award we have demonstrated that we are capable of meeting the increasing demands being made on us and I feel this will be of considerable benefit to Bulten in its current internationalisation process. The Award has given us new energy to continue the task, with Bulten Trading as an example, of permeating the whole of our organisation with this way of working.”

Congratulations to Bulten Trading AB

First SA8000 certificate awarded

BVQI Workshop 1999

BVQI’s first SA8000 certificate has been awarded to COOP Italia in Bologna, Italy for their marketing service, central buying, control and evaluation of suppliers who supply food and non-food products to 1,200 COOP retailers throughout Italy.

This year the BVQI Workshop will be held at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel in Dubai from 23rd to 26th May. We expect to welcome about 70 delegates from our 45 offices around the world and the agenda will, as last year, include a mixture of general presentations, working groups, training sessions and client presentations. A detailed programme will be sent to all delegates very soon.

“COOP Italia is making every effort to improve the quality of life for its staff, with special attention to women and children,” says COOP Italia’s Quality Manager, Maurizio Zucchi. “We decided to adopt SA8000 because the aim of the COOP, and its 3,375,000 shareholders in Italy, is to be both economically satisfactory and socially sustainable. While we have always believed that our working practices were first class, we felt independent verification would help us to show our customers that as a company we are committed to social accountability. This is a long term process and our suppliers have a key role to play in helping us to continually improve working practices.”

Training services are a relatively new part of BVQI’s activities, having been first introduced in 1994 with the first presentation of an IRCA registered Internal Auditor Training Course. During the intervening period the activity has been growing both in terms of the number of courses presented worldwide and the increasing share in the market.

1998

YEAR With nearly two hundred IRCA registered courses presented last year we have established ourselves as one of the leading auditor training organisations. Some 2,600 people have been trained on our courses in 1998 worldwide. The training services have hence proved to be a major revenue earner. Until last year BVQI had on offer only four auditor training courses which were registered by the International Register of Certificated Auditors (IRCA). In order to further the growth in training services, over the last few months we have developed a number of new training courses to complement BVQI’s product lines.
