«GRAND HUIT » VILLENNES POISSY 2014 CONTEST RULES The Grand 8 annual regatta organised by ACVP, is a time-trial rowing race on a 9KM course performed twice (18km in total), around the Villennes and Migneaux islands located at Villennes and Poissy. During the race, Technical challenges are to be achieved:  Start after putting the boat into the water  Slalom around the Poissy bridge piers  Pass underneath the Villennes bridge  Switch of cox at mid race The contest will take place on Sunday June 22nd 2014. The race is open to “yolette” – type boat (4Yx+) (“C-Boat”, touring quad+ scull, weight more than 75 Kg). For safety reasons yolette “ookis” are excluded. The overall ranking is established for all boats, based on the overall time achieved. A specific ranking could be decided regards the number of Vega Boats.

Pre-requisites to be allowed to race    

Participants must hold a licence « A » or « U » issued by the FFSA for 2013/2014. Participants must be 17 or older (Junior, Senior or Veteran). Participants must be a confirmed rower (because of the technical challenges imposed). Participants should provide a medical certificate attesting that the participant is physically fit to enter a rowing competition. The certificate should be less than 1 year old. Alternatively, if the licence was obtained by providing such a certificate, the valid licence can be used instead. The Club participating Chief should check the availability before registration. Crews consist of rowers and cox from the same rowing club. Crews can be feminine, masculine or mixed (a crew will be considered as mixed when a lady is rowing all the race). Foreign participants should provide their federal Licence or provide a document from their club attesting that the participant is physically fit to enter a rowing competition. They should have a personal insurance.

Participation Fees : 

8 euros par crew member. (40 euros per boat).

Awards:      

The Grand 8 trophy will be awarded to the club to which the winning boat belongs. The trophy is attributed for one year. A club that wins 3 times in a row gets to keep the trophy permanently. A medal is awarded to each member of the top 3 boats A cup is awarded to the team with the fastest overall time over the 2 slaloms (accumulated time for the 2 slaloms). ACVP Crews do not compete for the slalom challenge. A cup and medals are awarded to the first women’s boat. A cup and medals are awarded to the first mixed boat. A cap is given to each participant.

Team withdrawal:  

No penalty will be applied to teams withdrawing from the contest. Teams withdrawing after Friday June 20th, 5 pm will not be refunded.

RACE RULES Crew identification:     

A number is assigned to each boat This number should be installed at the front of the boat (in the “number holder”). Each boat should have a “number holder”. Both coxes must wear the boat number on their back Each crew member must wear their rowing club sports gear Rowing oars should be painted with their rowing club colours

Cox:  

The 1st cox becomes rower for the 2nd lap. The cox switch should take place « on the water » at the end of the 1st lap

Start:   

The start is given at regular intervals (from 1min30 to 3min depending on the number of boats). Crews and boats must be ready on the dock, oars in the oarlocks. On land, crews and boats are prepared in the starting order.

Start order is defined by draw on race day.

Boat landing: 

Once the finish line is crossed, boats are landed and are immediately carried to trailers.

Race course:   

The race is timed; the launch is included in the total time. Boats must follow the beacons along the course. A map of the course will be provided to each crew before the race. Boats must comply with safety rules and follow beacons: 1. 2. 3.

Overtaking is forbidden in narrow zones (narrow channel between the 2 islands, and through Poissy port) If 2 facing boats approach at the same time the narrow channel between the 2 island part, the boat coming from Villennes Island gives way to the one coming from the Migneaux island To be valid, the slalom should be done following the arrows guiding through the bridge piers.

If a crew does not comply with one of the above mentioned rules, time penalties can be applied: 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

Attempt to overtake in a forbidden area = 1 mn Refusal to be overtaken in an authorised area = 1 mn Failure to give way when entering the narrow channel = 1 mn Error in the slalom = 2 mn Slalom not performed = 5 mn No cox switch at the end of the 1st lap (in the start finish area) = 5 mn Failure to respect the beacons in the main river channel = 5 mn (for reasons of safety and fairness)

Crews must also comply with instructions given by safety boats. WARNING: Boats pass through the main river channel twice during the race. Rowing in this area is normally forbidden for safety reasons. Special Authorisations for the race day have been granted by the VNF and the prefecture, but commercial river traffic will not stop. Crews must therefore keep to the left shore and be extra cautious in this area. Safety:   

Safety is ensured by 6 safety boats during the race. A safety and first aid stand will be available on shore. Each boat must have a scoop, a fixed tether and at least one life jacket.

GENERAL INFORMATION Club Access:   

An access map is available on the website (http://acvp78.free.fr) Trailers are too high and large to use the main access road (due to tunnel underneath the railway). They must come from Poissy and use the track on the side of the river up to the club. Cars with trailer will park on the river side, 300 m away from the club. You must contact Véronique RICHE-SIMEON (tel : +33 6 46 31 23 09) who’s responsible for the trailer car park.
