REFLECTION This festival shines a spotlight on two of music’s great personalities and celebrates some of the finest music ever created. Two great improvisers, two romantic souls infused with classicism, two determined and ambitious men. Poets and philosophers. Virtuosos, hamstrung by fate. Both suffering cruel, cruel ends... The piano was Beethoven’s instrument. The first great composer for piano (as opposed to harpsichord), his career coincided with, and had a pivotal influence on, the development of the modern instrument. Over the course of Beethoven’s concertos emerges the model of the heroic soloist matching the orchestra for power and colour, a model for all later exponents of this storied idiom, from Brahms and Liszt to Rachmaninoff and Bartók. Schumann, the sensitive, brilliant autodidact from Zwickau, in turn picked up Beethoven’s legendary symphonic mantle and made it his own, adding strains of his trade-mark lyricism, and softening Ludwig’s hammer blows with his singing romanticism and flights of poetic fantasy.

REFLECTION | RÉFLEXION In many of my scores of piano concertos, there is a list of the performances I have given of that particular piece around the world — complete with date, name of orchestra, and of course the conductor. Opening my old score of Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto, I see that the first time I performed it was in January 1981 in Opole, Silesia (Poland). A 27-hour train journey took me there from my home in Paris. It was just when “Solidarność” was starting, and the orchestra refused to play on a “Free Saturday” so we played twice on the Sunday. After that, the performances were more musically notable: my debut with the Cleveland Orchestra; here in Ottawa with the NAC Orchestra and Raymond Leppard; and at my Trasimeno Music Festival in Umbria with Richard Tognetti (from the Australian Chamber Orchestra) leading from the violin… All of those performances have been memorable. With such a piece, how can they not be? It is with the greatest pleasure that I perform it once more in Ottawa tonight, and especially since it gives me the opportunity to work for the first time with Alexander Shelley. We’ll have fun! On va bien s’amuser!
