One of the hardest tasks I have as a concert pianist is to decide on repertoire for the hundred or more engagements and recordings I do every year all over the world. Everything has to be carefully © Peter Hundert
considered and coordinated, usually several years in advance. Then I have to find the time to learn it all. Tonight’s program looks like a mixed bag, but it is one I particularly look forward to sharing with you. Haydn and Schubert are two composers I love but they have figured less in my recitals over the years. The Schubert pieces are well-known and loved; the Haydn encapsulates all his wit, brilliance, novelty and daring in six minutes. Sandwiched in between is Beethoven’s Tempest Sonata — a very new addition to my repertoire and one that is particularly apt when we are about to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. Beethoven studied with Haydn and learned much from his works. Schubert idolized Beethoven and asked, on his deathbed, to be buried beside him. His wish was granted. In the second half, we turn to the colourful music of Spain. Scarlatti, though Neapolitan, lived most of his life in that country, writing some 555 keyboard sonatas for his pupil Princess (and later Queen) Maria Barbara. The same atmosphere pervades the music of Albéniz and Falla. What energy, rhythm, nobility, melancholy, fierce pride and, above all, pure joy there is in this music!
