CHAIRPERSON’S NOTES – by Teri Kruger Greetings to you all, Following an event-filled 2006, this year has begun with a flurry of activity and the beginning of exciting new projects. Most notable is our hike to the summit of Lion’s Head with Kfm Breakfast Show DJ, Nic Marais. A fantastic evening was had by all and the moon did not disappoint, so the word is out – we are a cool group! Our membership is expanding as we attract more enthusiasts to our walks and the social events are well supported with a healthy mix of our regular, local hikers and visitors to our shores. We are grateful for the support of the TMNP and their visitor rangers, particularly Bradley. Their enthusiasm to learn about the uniqueness of our special mountain is obvious and contagious. As our youngest committee member is at the tender age of 4 years old, I would like to explore activities that would be suitable for the younger folks. Let me introduce you to the “Klamber-Klub” which hopes to bring a positive environmental experience for the tots and not-so-young who simply want to take a stroll. Check our activity lists for details. Our newsletters are now available via email and also in the printed format for those who prefer this medium. Please feel free to send them on to interested parties and potential members. Rotary have invited us to collaborate with them on a fundraiser. Our first meeting to discuss the possibilities is being held at the Metropolitan Golf Course, Green Point on Thursday, 15th February from 17h45 for18h00. Dinner is free for the first 20 guests, thereafter at R30 per head, so please join us for the evening - RSVP to Tony by Tuesday 13th for catering purposes. Please note also that our AGM is to be held on Monday 26th March at the Fresnaye Sports Club. We have asked for the TMNP to attend in order to update us on the development proposals for the Lion’s Battery and Signal Hill. All are welcome. OBITUARY We were saddened to hear of the passing of Sally Marr in December. Sally served as a Committee member for some years, her forte being food, glorious food. She was a warm and generous person, and the unforgettable logo on her caterer’s apron was “Never trust a skinny cook!”

THANKS Thanks go to Quinton Bullard, who has resigned from the committee after recent heart problems. He hopes to be back on the trail as soon as he is fully fit. Despite creaky knees, Quinton did a marvellous job all over “our” mountain, fixing, sanding and varnishing numerous benches, and he was our stalwart “tail-end Charlie” on many a FLASH walk. Get well soon, Quinton.

LOOKOUTS ON LION’S HEAD by Lyn Gillis The 360 degree view from the top of Lions Head extends all the way round from the mountains and beaches of Camps Bay for an unparalleled view of the City Bowl, the Harbour, the front faces of Table Mountain and the Cape Flats. It has served as a lookout from the earliest times. – first by the Dutch East India Company, then by French and British occupying forces, and later of course by South Africa. It was particularly important in World War 1. A ladder was used to reach the summit but was replaced in 1881 by chains bolted to the rock. Ships approaching the Cape from the North could easily be spotted; a 17th century Dutch report reads as follows – “One or two men are constantly stationed on the Lions Head and as they perceive any ship at sea, they hoist the flag and fire one or more times according to the number of vessels that appear, a small piece of cannon that has been got up to the place with great difficulty”. (quoted by Jose Burman in the Table Mountain book). News was signalled to the fort and town below by waving flags and later by firing a small cannon. When the British took the Cape in 1806 the name Lions Rump was changed to that of Signal Hill and in 1891 they mounted serious guns on its western flank (the Lion Battery). This has been continuously manned from the time of the First World War although latterly only for the ceremonial firing of the noonday gun. The gun is loaded by a naval officer by placing a bag of powder into the muzzle of a small cannon which is then automatically ignited by an electronic signal from the Cape Town Astronomical Observatory. Everyone in Cape Town and around jumps slightly and checks their watch! And the pigeons fly! PS: The Post Office “Vlaeberg” in Loop Street literally means ‘Flag Mountain”, so this old place name lives on in the CBD.

“THANK YOU” from Annabel: “I wish to thank FLASH and its members for their support after our hiking party was mugged near to the top of Newlands Ravine in November, 2006. A special word of appreciation to Teri Kruger, Rheina Epstein, and, to TMNP staff for their help. Thanks also for the super day-pack which is already very much part of me. I look forward to many more enjoyable walks on the mountains of the Cape, hopefully in the company of lots of FLASH members and supporters.
