On 26 October 2006, the authors and four other defence analysts arrived in Afghanistan on a 10-day visit. Chief of Defence Staff General Rick Hillier invited all six retired senior officers to Afghanistan to give them an opportunity to understand and appreciate the “ground truth” of Canadian operations in Afghanistan. They were also invited to attend the command changes of NATO/ISAF Regional Command South and the Canadian Task Force Kandahar. The visit included stops in Kabul at the Canadian Embassy and the Afghan National Training Centre, the Task Force Kandahar HQ and various Canadian units within the U.S. operated base at Kandahar Airport, and Camp Nathan Smith, the site of the Provincial

Reconstruction Team in Kandahar city. The visit was exceptionally revealing, informative and reinforced the authors’ impression that the whole story of Canada’s activities in Afghanistan in general, and Kandahar Province in particular, is under-reported in Canadian media.

Le 26 octobre 2006, les auteurs et quatre autres analystes de la défense sont arrivés en Afghanistan pour une visite de 10 jours. Le Chef d’État-major de la Défense, le Général Rick Hillier, invita les six officiers supérieurs, à la retraite, afin qu’ils aient l’occasion de comprendre et saisir le véritable

contexte des opérations canadiennes en Afghanistan. Ils furent aussi invités aux passations de commandement du Commandement Régional Sud de l’OTAN/ISAF et de la Force opérationnelle canadienne Kandahar. Ils ont visité l’ambassade canadienne à Kaboul, le Centre d’entraînement national afghan et le QG de la Force opérationnelle Kandahar. Ils ont aussi visité quelques unités canadiennes dans l’enceinte de la base gérée par les É.-U. au terrain d’aviation de Kandahar ainsi que le camp Nathan Smith, qui est l’emplacement de l’Équipe de reconstruction provinciale dans la ville de Kandahar.
