You use the passé composé, or perfect tense, to talk about the past. The sentences in the perfect tense above have three parts:

•

a subject – this could be a subject pronoun, a name or a noun, e.g. je/Marie/le chat

• •

a part of the verb avoir – this is called the auxiliary a past participle made from the infinitive of the verb.
