Presentation 15th National Chanson Singing Contest

The French Cultural Centre, Alliance Française, the Korean association for French teaching and Seocho City Council are hosting the “The National Chanson Singing Contest”. This popular contest is coming back to Seoul as a revamped production to reach an even larger audience.

History 15th National Chanson Singing Contest

This contest has been held for more than 20 years, forging a solid relationship between Korean youth and French culture and language. The contest first started as an event to promote French culture and chanson. The total number of participants and contestants amounts to more than 1500. Some of them have become recognized artists such as famous jazz singer Nah Yoon-seon.

Aims 15th National Chanson Singing Contest

Build on Korean love for singing and French chanson. Draw the attention of the thousands of Korean youth who are learning French and give them opportunities to express and show their passion and talents with francophone Chanson. Advertise French culture and excellence to Korean youth.

Additions 15th National Chanson Singing Contest

The 2009 Finals will take place on June 20th during the Seocho Music Day, an open-air stage production which gathered 8000 people last year in its first edition. This International Music Day participates in June 21st Fête de la musique, an event which started 25 years ago in France and is now celebrated all over the world in more than 30 countries. A French artist and professional singer will perform and take part in the concerts scheduled for the Music Day’s evening session.

Fête de la musique Background information

A free and popular event Different from a music festival, the Fête de la Musique is above all a free popular fête, open to any participant (amateur or professional musicians) who wants to perform in it. This Music day allows the expression of all styles of music in a cheerful atmosphere. It aims at a large audience, working to popularise musical practice for young and not so young people from all social backgrounds. It gives an opportunity to communicate and share a very special moment through music.

Appendices 15th National Chanson Singing Contest

Contest Regulation Clause 1. The National Chanson Singing contest is hosted by the French Cultural Center, Alliance Française and the Korean association for French teaching Clause 2. Requirements of entry are as follows: Contestants must be Korean students currently learning French at university, high school or Alliance Française in Korea (No specific major required).

Clause 5. Each contestant must send an audio-video file (max. 15 Mo) of his/ her performance together with an application form to the organizing committee [email protected] between April 28th and 30th. Clause 6. The song must be a French traditional or contemporary chanson, a Korean song translated into French, or a song created in French by the contestant.

Clause 3. Professional singers and qualifiers in the Finals in 2004 or 2005 cannot enter the contest.

Clause 7. The performance is limited to 7 min.

Clause 4. A participant may enter the tournament as solo, duet or group (no more than 5 people) but the prize will be awarded to the team.

Clause 8. The tournament consists of 1st and 2nd Preliminary contests and the Finals.

Clause 9. Through a fair screening process, 1st round qualifiers will be selected and announced on www.seoulparis.net and by individual report. Clause 10. The 2nd Preliminary contest will be held at Sookmyung university on May 23rd, 1-5 pm. An instrumental soundtrack CD may be used as accompaniment but if necessary, arranging an accompanist must be done by each contestant. Clause 11. The Finals will be held at Seocho Music Festival on June 20th, 6-8 pm and it will be publicly tape-recorded. Clause 12. Members of the Jury will be appointed by the organizing committee and include francophone representatives and musical experts.

Clause 13. Selection criteria will be personal interpretation, stage performance, vocal performance and French prononciation. Contestants cannot raise an argument on a judgment from the judges. Clause 14. The winners may receive the following prizes: round-trip airline ticket to France, holiday package to the Francofolies Music Festival in La Rochelle (France), free French language courses, free registration for French exams. Clause 15. A prize can not be transferred to others or changed for other uses. Clause 16. The airline ticket must be used by the prize recipient, and the recipient may choose a departure date within a year from the Finals. Clause 17. Registration for language courses and exams must be used within a year from the Finals.

Clause 18. The tournament is sponsored and publicized by the French Embassy and other francophone Embassies, Alliance Françaises and Korean Corporations and French Corporations. Clause 19.
