NATURE IN THE EYE - HAIKU COLLECTION
Podgorica, 2017.
Mada je dužnost selektora time teža.
I
Haiku: Vjetar u krošnji Hoće li noćas pasti I poslednji list?

A o njihovoj vrijednosnoj skali neka opet razmišljaju čitaoci. Šifre glase ovako: Lena; Cisko Kid; Mugoša na mjesecu; Zrno; metarmorfoza; OLER; Bogojavljenje; Lotos; Bonaca mora; Miris sijena; Letnji bioskop; Ken Louch; Proljeće; Silver Surfer; San trešnje; Brdar 70; Korina; Akil; Lada.

Među pet korektno napisanih haikua, imaju dva, a možda i tri, izuzetna. Zbog toga se ovom autoru dodijeljuje PRVA NAGRADA.

PRIRODA U OKU / NATURE IN THE EYE

Golubovci, Montenegro 2017. The Selector’s decision:
THE FLOCKS FROM THE EAST he Eastern flocks paused in Montenegro. These flocks stayed the night with us. They stopped and landed finding an overnight rest and it appears they decided to spend the Summer with us and then the winter as well, ready to stay with us. It must be they had found a favourable area. And where if not here in this fruitful Zeta County, by the river Morača, close by the Skadar Lake, with the sea nearby. No, I have not wandered off from the theme, the competition for haiku coordinated and founded by the tireless Slavka Klikovac and her „Vizija” (Vision). Following the decades of the increase of haiku in this mostly epic country, we have now a contest for haiku poetry with a response of the poets from the region and even farther, much farther away. It must be that Montenegro has been recognized out by the poets as a small and exotic land so the haijins sent their submissions thinking they would be highly visible and recognized. So the poetry has poured in. I’m joking of course, for I’m pleased to have the honour to judge such an impressive number of quality haiku, even though it is difficult for me. But I don’t complain, of course although it took much more time and thought, for it was not easy to make the correct decisions. And they are as follows:

tever suits the best however, in essence both meaning the same. Having a too small number of the prizes available, all those haiku which were seriously considered for an award, the judge awarded with an Honourable Mention, or a Commendation, depending on how it is preferred to be told or written. There is a number of them and I certainly hope it is not the result of the judge’s weakness but the competitive quality of the works which arrived for the contest which is praise and not a drawback of the contest itself. Having in mind that these poems will be published in the post-contest anthology with the rest of the work of these and other authors (the awarded as well), we will not mention them here, but only line the codes under which they arrived for the contest. Their position in the collection is coincidental thus giving the reader an opportunity to evaluate them himself/herself. These are respective codes: Lena; Cisko Kid; Mugoša na mjesecu; Zrno; metarmorfoza; OLER; Bogojavljenje; Lotos; Bonaca mora; Miris sijena; Letnji bioskop; Ken Louch; Proljeće; Silver Surfer; San trešnje; Brdar 70; Korina; Akil; Lada. Considering the competition rules did not separate the contest for a single haiku and a haiku sequence, which is one among the possible accesses or paths towards the same goal, the selector took into consideration every entry with five haiku and tried to discover the very special thread among them which bands them together into a set of poems, which can be named a haiku sequence, a haiku set or a cycle of haiku, with full rights. Determined to do so he singled out fifteen sets of fine haiku which met his requirement of quality work both as single poems and which together build a special, thematically meaningful whole. The entry under the code „Đul” obtruded itself as better and more integral than the rest of them:

These violets Let them grow jauntily– There’s no one to pick them for. Pass by if you can. A flowering rose on the tomb – remonstrates me. No touching a spider For somebody is still alive In this home. Among the five correctly written haiku there are two, even perhaps three of them which are of exceptional value. That is the reason for giving the first prize to this author. Under the code „Mjesečeva staza” among the five haiku the judge discovered two of exceptional value, so this author receives the second prize. The code „Odsjaji sunca” in my opinion beside a good set as a whole carries one very special haiku so this author receives the third prize.

I’m certain there are three more authors deserving some kind of an award and they received the Honourable Mentions, their codes are as follows: 0113756181; Maslina; Lijepa Istra; Tyffransky. After this announcement I wish to say something more, yet not as a justification for any eventual selection error or mischief, the selector all the time kept in mind that each among the readers of his decisions would think or say he/she would have made entirely different choices. It may appear to the reader that some among the awarded haiku had the selector’s attention undeservedly and some mentioned work or even not selected in any way appears to be better. The selector accepts the fact that this is mostly so. I had many dilemmas on a number of occasions while reading the entire body of the work, then while making a wider and later narrow choice of the best haiku. Some dilemmas appeared during a single day or a single hour but the narrowest choice circled within the same poems – and those are the ones I have chosen to be awarded and commended. They are within the range of my cognitive and reading experience and well meaning altogether. How objective and valid they are indeed you will evaluate yourself, if a kind of objectivity is possible, for we know why this dilemma exists but it becomes easier to avoid it remembering those well known verses: „Oh, no one knows anything – knowledge is fragile.”* In the hope I have not harmed anyone I keep to myself, perhaps even as a consolation, and you, the users of this information will make your own evaluations. I owe to you some of * Iz pjesme Povratak, Dobriše Cesarića (1902.-1980.) From the poem “Return” by the Croatian poet Dobriša Cesarić (1902-1980).

my short observations with regards to and about this contest, giving them even as a recommendation for your future works, haiku writing and entering the competitions. This contest not only justified all expectations but I experienced it as something enriching the Montenegrin not small haiku milieu where this genre is accepted as an equal to other poetical genres. This is the first haiku contest in this old country and will draw considerable and wide attention to it. A large number of excellent, very good and good haiku arrived here to this part of the world to be published in the post-contest anthology, recited at the festival, libraries both personal and public and in the future it will be a part of the Montenegrin cultural heritage as a whole. At this moment it appears not important from which milieu and which country the authors are from of these small pearls. Perhaps the haiku itself should be read without the author’s name thus a poem not hiding behind the author, without the author’s ego even by the meaning of his/her name as it was done by this selector who had access to the codes only and which were his helpful walking stick to move around more easily discovering the jewels which gladdened him in the way only a haiku experience can. So, it is my proposal, to organize a single contest for haiku by anonymous authors, in the future – or until the post-contest anthology is printed, until some time has passed by or at least the time needed for the forgettable poems to be affirmed. At this contest, a haiku experience as I said, thinking of that real, true, sincere experience written down less or more successfully in most cases is built into true haiku. Other poems I avoided dexterously believing our encounter was accidental. I was sad only in those cases when I realized the author had everything there but the skill of realization of the haiku itself. Especially when haijin would pack his/her haiku

The results of the 1st Montenegrin Haiku Contest in English, 2017. Adjudicator’s Report (by David Cobb) was chosen for the honour of adjudicating this contest because the organisers thought I would be best able to monitor the English. I found myself looking at about 235 haiku by almost 50 writers, about whom, because of the rules of the contest, I was in the dark. I had no idea about the participants’ names, where they were living, or what language they normally spoke. For want of such detailit was reasonable to suppose they were all, or most of them, Montenegrins. I supposed there were no entrants from countries where English is spoken as the first language, so I would be making my judgements on a level playing field. I prepared to look kindly on small ‘mistakes’ in the English, so long as these didn’t make the sense of the haiku unclear. As a matter of fact, there were about a dozen entries that didn’t match up to lucid English and/or were not true to haiku form, so these I had no choice but to rule out of contention. As for the remainder, mostly their meanings came across to me in a correct and lucid way. What in fact influenced my choices was the writers’ ability to record a graphic message about some happening or observation, something noteworthy in their own lives. When I had finished making my decisions it was something of a shock to be informed that the entrants were actually living in no fewer than 19 countries, and not one of them was a Montenegrin! There were half a dozen living in countries where English is a/the national language. But this information did not seem to invalidate the awards I made. Let us turn to the haiku themselves now.

A majority of them use a ‘formula’ in which a traditional ‘season word’ from nature is juxtaposed with another less conventional image from modern life. On the one hand we have lots of cherry blossom, rain, frost and snow, butterflies and larks, clouds and wind. On the other hand we have traffic and waste bins, stressful moments and crushed egg shells, drought and flood, beggars and refugees, psyche and writer’s block. This seems to be a world where people are struggling to find peace and security when these are under threat or have been lost. As I read through the haiku, which I had to do many times in the process of winnowing out strong contenders for the main awards, several criteria began to establish themselves. One was, of course, skill in using the haiku form (or rather, the now established form of ‘Western free style’ haiku.) But tradition should be in balance with originality. Another criterion might be ability to link a flash of observation in the present to the continuity of human experience over time (what some call ‘the vertical axis’.) The mood sustained by a haiku was important too, and haiku might capture something of the philosophy of people living in our times. The words ‘division’ and ‘divisiveness’ kept on entering my head. Perhaps they are an essential part of our Zeitgeist? Of course, haiku does not use words like ‘division’ or ‘security’. But it may imply one or both in a phrase such as ‘split rail fence’. Well, then. In First Place I have put a haiku sent in by pen name, Bonsai. Its context is homely but not over-familiar. It is open-ended; the reader may decide whether this is a quiet or unquiet scene. It has a vertical axis for, amazingly enough, it brings to mind the thought that humans and animals have gazed at each other over fences since prehistoric times when humans gave up hunting and became animal keepers. Finally, it is well formed and easy on the ear. So, congratulations to the author for producing this excellent haiku!

staring match sheep on the other side of a split rail fence Meik Blöttenberger, Hanover, Pennsylvania, United States The Second Prize goes to pen name Whiskey for this haiku: a swirl of blue the kingfisher disturbs my reflection Tracy Davidson, Armscote, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, Great Britain The choice of ‘swirl’ is excellent here, and the ambiguity of ‘reflection’ is acceptably clever. We appreciate both the poet’s facial image floating in the water and what is going on in the head. A ‘barrier’ of consciousness is disrupted? It is for the reader to decide how welcome this ‘disturbance’ is. I’d like to share Third Place between two entries, Nexus and Shakuhachi. Nexus gives us: noonday heat a butterfly seeks rest in my shadow Celestine Nudanu, Ghana This is neatly structured and on another day might well have been a first choice. But I had the feeling we would have met quite a few haiku with a rather similar happening to relate. Nevertheless it did create mixed feelings of ease and discomfort, and of empathy between human and insect.

Shakuhachi offers us: my ex remarries a snake gourd unfurls its flowers of lace Judit Katalin Hollós, Budapest, Hungary This is obviously a poem about ‘division’, personal, but within the range of many readers. The emotion is, in best haiku style, not directed by adjectives, but by juxtaposing images from nature. I don’t actually know what a snake gourd is like, but I get the writer’s mood all the same.
No, ova informacija nije nikako poljuljala ni poništila moj izbor nagrađenih radova. Vratimo se sada samim haiku pjesmama. života. S jedne strane imamo mnogo trešnjica u cvatu, kišu, šumu i snijeg, leptir i ševe, oblake i vjetar. S druge strane imamo promet, kante za smeće, stresne trenutke i zdrobljene ljuske jajeta, sušu i poplavu, prosjake i migrante, dušu i književničku krizu.

U stvari i ne znam kako izgleda zmijolika tikva, no doživio sam autoričino raspoloženje. MERIT AWARDS / POHVALE believe the organisers of the contest are planning a more representative publication, which would include further haiku under a heading such as Merit Awards. I have chosen one or sometimes two from nearly all the entrants. Last but not least, a big thank you to the organisers and those taking part in the contest for the pleasure they have given me.

sound of a gull disappears with the autumnal wind on the strand * without a bundle the swallows started their journey *
raste dječija radost brijeg okićen cvijećem – ljeto, ah ljeto!
children’s joy grows a hill adorned with flowers – summer, oh, summer!
bacih udicu – umjesto ribe ulovih mjesec
* I threw the hook – instead of fish cought the moon
jesenji vjetar prije zore postrojava svele travke

svakog trena more doliva radost u mojoj duši
* each moment the sea pours more joy to my soul
gle zore, gle – vjetar na terasi lista novine
* look at the sunrise – wind on the terracce leafing the newspaper

* a trembling sky – the sea lowered into our shades

* drippping tears from three flowers onto my mother’s grave
pucketa badnjak na ognjištu – razigrale se iskre
* crackling logs in the fireplace − playful sparks
