Who should be called a journalist, then ? @ LizaM, What you say is partly true. In deed, everyone has the means to become a part of the information process, and this is mostyly thanks to new technologies. Moreover, if this new kind of journalism is motivated by some morals and a citizen behaviourattitude, we can only be enthusiastic towards it ! However, I would disagree with you oin some points and join Jasmine's point of view. Journalism is very serious business and the whole investigative and information process can't be put in anybody's hands. As she said, a true journalist nedds sspecial skills to be good at what he is doing.

Then, it doesn't seem reveliantrelevant to me to consider democratical countries and dictatorships in the same way ! The photographies show us two kinds of journalists. On the one hand, the typical Aamerican journalist, on the other hand, citizens journalists from an Aarab country. In a country in which the mere profession of journalism may not even exist, citizen journalism takes all its sens.(sense) meaning

Crowdsourcing = user-generated content To Alice and Soledad, From my views you are both right expressing your opinions.= vous avez raison d’exprimer votre opinion However, one the cartoon's aspects wasn't dealt with. What should we think about the statement "but most of the time, we just steal their content" ? At the first sight it seems very unfair and rude to say such a things. But if we think about iwice, we will understand that it is, in a way, what participatory journalism are is about. As far as I'm concerned, I don't expect amateur journalists to write a very deep paper about X subjects a given topic. To my mind, participatory journalism firstly consists in relaying information to someone who will have the means and the skills to analyze this information and to improve it the as best he or she can. This is also CNN's conception /vision of participatory journalism. When they encourage every body to "report" news, it is obvious it has to be reported to them, so they will be able to use it as a base for their work. This goes int the direction of what you both said: a journalist needs to be educated and to have studied a lot to be a journalist. This is why participatory journalism is called "participatory". As an individual you can't do all the work

a true journalist is doing but you obviously can participate to what he is doing. The question with shrinking newsrooms... Faute récurrente

At the first sight, the Internet offers a incredible y among amount of news that were or that will be shared instantaneously with people from all over the world. But according to L. Downie this can be dangerious. In deed it "looks like news". What if the citizen journalistic websites we are used to checking every morning never quote his their sources or re-interpret news and testimonies as it they wants ? As Laurie wisely said, people have to put what they read into perspectives, but I would enlarge this opinion to all kinds of medium media. Even when we are reading a very traditionnal newspaper, we should never consider the content as a final truth. Everybody can be wrong or react too fast or be leading led on by a self-called witness or informater informer..… What future is there for investigative journalism ?

To my mind, C.Chambers is totally right when he says people will never stop willing to be informed. And maybe we should really wonder what and how we want to be informed, and what we regard as information. C.Chambers is pretty clear when he affirms everyone still needs reporters and true instigative journalists. They certainly have things to offer that a citizen or a participatory journalist can't. For example, what about the fFrench Cazuhac scandal ? It Oui was revealed by Media Parks Mediapart. From my view, even if citizen and participatory journalism has made its proofs proved its worth, only such professionals are still able to bring such scandalious issues to the light. The great firewall of China

To the previous commentries, commentators there is nothing to be added ! China's government has been oppressing a whole population for more than a half century and it is to be ended. As the free westerners we are, we can only be admirative admiring towards such couragious citizens. They risk their lives to broadcast news as quickly, precisely and wordly as they can. I sincerely believe that citizen journalism is the best thing that could happen to China-like or other powerful dictatorships. However, I didn't have the impression the spokesman was congratulating the Chinese government. But rather congratulating Cchinese citizens, which is what we all should be doing. In deed, those bloggers need readers and suppporters to be taken into account.

Exact indeed
