Look Around You My phone rang the other night and it was Neil Hutchinson checking in as he usually does every week or so. Our conversations never seem to change. We talk about the latest industry gossip, and then Neil quickly brings me up to speed on the southern East Coast kite scene. Our conversations always then drifts back to the good old days of island hopping in the Caribbean. As I said goodbye, I thought back to how I met Neil. He had just completed his kite crossing to Cuba, and I was assigned to interview him. We did our interview over the telephone in 2001, and our friendship has grown into a brotherhood ever since. I feel very lucky to have been given that assignment knowing what I know now. I spoke with Andy Hurdman the other day. Andy and I have traveled quite a bit together, and he has given me tips throughout the years on tricks and gear. Andy is a phenomenal kiteboarder, surfer, and skateboarder. He also rides a dirt bike better than most pros. Andy quickly brought me up to speed on what new tricks he has been working on and told me how he just tried snowboarding. Of course the kid is a natural and can probably school some of the best. As I hung up the phone, I thought back to when I first met Andy four years ago in the Miami Airport. I feel very lucky to have randomly been booked on the same flight that day. This afternoon my mobile phone starting buzzing. I was in a meeting and saw the 808, so I knew it was Hawaii ringing in. As I answered the phone, I heard “Whad up Riggatelli this is Felix,” in the classic Felix Pivec voice. I started laughing, and said, “Where are you at Pivec?.” Felix is the Photo: Clark Merritt friend that always calls me from different sides of the world at random hours of the day. Felix just happened to be in the airport traveling to California on another one of his adventures. Felix and I have toured dozens of countries over the years, and some things never change. We BS’ed for about twenty minutes until Felix’s plane started to board. As I hung up the phone I thought back to Kitebeach, Maui in 1999 when Pivec and I first met. I feel lucky to have crossed paths with one of the coolest Australians I have ever met. I was driving home from a session when I started thinking about what I was going to write for this issue’s editorial. I was checking my messages and quickly realized how many friends kiteboarding has brought into my life. I am sure my story is no different than yours, and I apologize to my friends that I left out. I want you to take a moment and think about all of the interesting faces you have met along your journey of becoming a kiteboarder. There are so many different personalities that make up our sport. Next time you are down at your local beach; take a moment to look around you and appreciate all of the new friends Kiteboarding has brought into your life.

ver since Slingshot decided to support my search for the most epic waves around the world to ride with a kite, I have felt like the luckiest person alive! Not only have the last year’s travels given me the best kiteboarding so far in my life, but they have also let me enjoy all the other things I love to do. I have spent the last year not only kiting, but also surfing, fishing, and just having a good time traveling with my best friends. Just in the past few months I have hit America, Mexico, Fiji, Indonesia, Australia, Tasmania, Europe, and Asia. Each one of these places has their own incredible story, both good and bad. I have always said that you can have a bad time, but you can never have a bad experience. In the end, it’s always good.

Vision The whole vision for me has been to find the best waves to use the kite to tow into, like a jetski would tow a surfer. There are two 12

ways to ride a wave with a kite. One is to use the power of the kite to ride the wave and the other is to use the power of the kite to whip you into the wave, and then use the power of the wave to surf. Neither is right or wrong. It really comes down to doing what you like, but for me it’s all about using the power of the wave and making it look like surfing. To accomplish this, I have been concentrating on hitting the spots I would normally go for surfing.

Highlights The two highlights of my travels would have to be Fiji and the Mentawis. I spent four years of my life living on Namotu Island in Fiji and every time I return it just gets better. To have four world-class waves a short boat ride away, constant trade winds, and epic fishing is the ultimate for me! This year I flew over for a Quiksilver event, and my best friend Dano and I scored three days of the best wave riding I have ever had.

Over the years I have done boat trips in the Mentawis occasionally, but hadn’t made it back there since I started kiteboarding. It’s somewhere I have always wanted to kite, but just never had the opportunity. This year, a group of us got together and spent two weeks cruising the islands looking for wind and waves. We didn’t score epic kiting, but we had a good taste of the potential along with some of the most incredible surfing I’ve ever had. Just being out there on a boat is what it’s all about. Nothing feels better than having everything you love right there at your disposal.

Holy Grail The places you go and the people you meet are such a big part of life; everybody has a different story and every place has a different play. I appreciate every single second of it. Kiteboarding has given me everything and taken me everywhere, and I just can’t wait for my next trip! 13

What do you think of when you hear the word “grom?” Most people think of the little brat they always see and try to ignore on the beach or that kid who is out to prove himself trying to one up everyone else. This stereotype couldn’t be more wrong. Yes, a few of groms are like that, but so are a lot of older guys. Every time I look at a fellow grom, I think of how hard it was to convince my parents I wasn’t going to drown. It was even harder to get them to pay for gear, lessons and to sacrifice countless hours at the beach. Being young in this sport is very hard no matter how respectful you are to people. You could be talking to someone and hold a normal conversation with them, but once they find out your age, they treat you COMPLETELY different. Groms are the future of this sport whether you like it or not. It is not bow kites or radical new board designs, but the true heart and determination of young riders all over the world that will progress this sport. So, next time you’re at your local beach or anywhere for that matter, show a little bit more respect towards that one grom. Try and see things through their eyes, because that one compliment on their new trick or a pointer could mean the world to them. The one thing I

Into the Air: A Kiteboarding Experience This film is not yet rated for kiteboarders! Let me explain. TIPS FOR MAKING FRIENDS AT THE BEACH

1. I can’t stress this one enough: If you are going out downwind of someone setting up for a wave, keep your kite nice and low. Save big lofty jumps for places where your kite won’t interfere with someone trying to ride a wave. 2. Especially important for the late sunset session: When you see someone frantically pulling into the parking lot and desperately trying to get out for a session before it gets dark, limit your conversation to kite size and whether or not the wind is fading. Save the stories of your crazy kiteloops and sick off-the-lips for later.

3. If you see a group of locals focused on a particular peak: Keep in mind that there’s lots of ocean to the North and South for you to ride. 4. If you are ever in doubt as to who has the right-of-way: ALWAYS yield to the rider who has flames on their kite. Kiting can be dangerous - ride with Caution! 5. Don’t be afraid to get your hair wet! 6. And finally: No matter how gnarly you think you are - never mess with Bird Dawg!

Stage 1 of the 2006 Corona Extra Winter Tour was held in Col du Petit, St. Bernard, Italy, on January 9-15, 2006. Despite the lighter than expected conditions, the riders stepped it up this year with many new and impressive moves added to the trick list. Never before in the history of the Wintertour have KGBs and kiteloophandlepasses been executed during a competition. Newcomer Marek Zack, from the Czech Republic, had some new moves that stunned the audience. After this successful introduction stage of the 2006 Snowkite Freestyle World Cup, everyone is looking forward to Stage 2 of the tour, to be held in Semnoz, France in March. What did you do before getting involved in the kiteboarding industry? Most recently, contract administration for an Engineering firm in Houston, Texas. How and why did you get into the kiteboarding retail business? The why, was for a lifestyle change. Being avid windsurfers brought my wife and me in contact with Cline Street Sailboards, a local Corpus shop that catered to both windsurfers and kiteboarders. Over the course of several years and after numerous conversations with the previous owner led us to consider the possibility of working in the sports that we are passionate about. Eventually the timing worked out and we found ourselves owning and operating the business. We are fortunate to be in a location with truly the greatest natural conditions for kiteboarding and windsurfing.

I believe it is important to try to give something back to the customers that support you. Recently I had the privilege to give a hands on demonstration to a group of middle school science students. I don’t know who had the larger smile, the students or me after each of them took a turn flying the 2m trainer. We’ve provided assistance to the Kiteboardering Club at the local campus of Texas A&M University. This club was recently established in the fall of ‘05 and has grown to approximately 60 members. The last weekend in January went off with big wind and big waves for the Jupiter Kiteboarding Invasion in Florida. Jeremy Green of Jupiter Kiteboarding along with Neil Hutchinson of XRated Kiteboarding hosted three days of wild wave riding and sick aerial acrobatics from some of the world’s top pro ranked kiteboarders. Men and women’s divisions had tight competition for the overall titles which included wave riding, biggest air and kite loops. In the end, Mikey Bradley captured best overall rider honors with brilliant moves surfing strapless. JN’s Melissa Gil took first place in the women’s division. This is Jupiter’s third festival, and with conditions like these, it’s sure to get the attention of more and more top riders looking for the ultimate ride.

North American Snowkite Jam Dishes Up Perfect Conditions By Jason Jones

What is the kiteboarding scene like in your area? Well, Corpus is known as the #1 area in the continental United States for consistent winds. Until recently, most people were not aware that the Corpus area offers excellent wave riding in the Gulf, first rate bump and jump riding in the bay along with fantastic flat water riding in the Laguna Madre. Any issues (access, usage rights, etc) or everything all good? Currently the only local area that does not permit kiteboarding is the Padre Island National Seashore. For the most part our local riders are considerate of the usage of the various sites and are good ambassadors of the sport. How does your shop support the kiteboarding community? Are you involved in helping the local community in general? Since purchasing the shop we have hosted three combined social gatherings for both the kiteboarding and windsurfing communities. We 24

Where do you draw riders from? What tips can you offer experienced kiters who want to come kite your area? We draw riders from across the globe. During the winter and early spring the northerly fronts usually pack 20-35 knot winds with air temps in the 40-60 degree range and water temps any where from 52-67 degrees so a full wetsuit of 4/3 or better is recommended. However, we have been known to have days where a shorty would do just fine! The only other tip I can offer a visiting experienced kiteboarder is to please respect and support the local public kiteboarding sites by keeping safety and courtesy first in mind when riding near the public. . What tips can you offer visiting kiteboarders who want to hook up with local riders and kite in your area? Contact the shop either by phone or email. There are enough friendly local riders willing to help visiting kiteboarders of any skill level with all the local ins and outs.

Mille Lacs Lake in central Minnesota was the perfect venue for 2006 North American Snowkite Jam. The stars lined up for the event with Mother Nature dishing up the perfect snow and wind combination for what proved to be the sickest snowkite gathering in North America! With a $5000 prize purse and bragging rights on the line, hundreds of kiters made the trip from at least 10 different countries from around the globe. Kites filled the air and dominated the sky on Saturday as the world’s first Kite Snowskate competition went off nicely with perfect, moderate winds. The Freestyle Park Jam was blessed with the strongest wind of the weekend and rightfully so as the high flyers took big air to new heights. Canada showed up big with riders putting themselves on the map and on the podium taking 10 spots out of a possible 30! t’s before 5 a.m. Hawaii time, and I quickly realize the trip started way too early. We are in Maui hitching a ride with a boat full of tourists over to the small island of Lana’i. You could hear the tourists whispering to each other, “Who are these guys, and what do they have in those big bags?” The crew for this trip consisted of John Romais, Denver Coon, Bobby Bosch and photographer Kim Kern, who immediately started firing away as soon as we left the dock. Kim is great to shoot with because she loves to kiteboard as much as she likes shooting photos.

JULY 25, 2005 – 9:36 A.M.

We arrived at the harbor on Lana’i with the sun scorching. Lana’i has to be the hottest place in the Hawaiian Islands. We quickly picked up our Land Cruiser and headed out to the beach. The harbor is on the south shore of Lana’i, so we worked our way to the top of the island where we stopped off for some supplies and Red Bull. Soon we descended down to the north shore, where the kiteboarding spot is. The best kiteboarding is just upwind of the shipwreck in a little bay, with mini shacks lining the beach. The kiting here is insane; beautiful surroundings with Lana’i, Molokai, and Maui all in your field of view. There are always plenty of kickers, and good sideonshore wind.

We had two solid days of riding. The wind was insane the first day, and we kited our asses off at our little spot. Bobby and Denver were pushing each other to do bigger and bigger moves while Kim sat there with a smile on her face capturing the action. At the end of the second day, it got even windier. We decided to head down to this old shipwreck to take some shots. It was gnarly to say the least! The spot consisted of miles of empty shoreline lined with Kiovi trees, with waves exploding over the bow of this huge WWII cargo vessel that hit the reef decades ago. Kiting in the shadows of the huge shipwreck made all of us feel like we needed tetanus shots from just looking at it. This did not stop us from charging the

waves that reeled off the wreck. You could either ride the wave and smack a section, or you could boost off any of the countless kickers. As sketchy as this place was to kite, I was with two of my best friends having one of those epic sessions. JULY 26, 2005

6:30 A.M.

The third day brought even windier conditions. I rigged up a 6m and rode out in 30-35 knots of solid Hawaiian trade winds to get some final shots. There had to be gusts well into the 40’s. After two tacks of bouncing from wave top to wave top, I got lifted off of my edge and almost took out Kim, the photographer. It was at this point that I decided to go in. Denver, Bobby and I 29

agreed that we had got our fair share of good wind and riding. As we loaded our gear into the Land Cruiser to drive back to the dock, I took a moment to appreciate the beauty of the spot and thought about how I was going to write about this place. Our little trip was more than just another kiteboarding story. Bobby, Denver and I are three friends who love to ride together. Take the camera away and we would have had the same amount of fun. There is nothing better than traveling to new spots with your best friends and pushing each other’s level. Hopefully our adventure will inspire you to grab your friends and take a trip of your own.

Lana’i is known as ‘The Pineapple Island.’ The 140 square mile island is 13 miles wide and boasts 47 miles of coastline. The population is just under 3000. Lana’i is tiny compared to the other Hawaiian Islands. Dole Pineapple used to grow and harvest many of its pineapples from here. The official color of Lana’i is yellow. Lana’i’s flower is the Kaunaoa (Yellow and Orange Air Plant). Lana’i’s only airport can be found in Lana’i city. Two world-class hotels can be found on the island: Manele Bay Hotel and the Lodge at Koele. The famous Garden of the Gods is located on the northern portion and is home to one of the largest, and admittedly, strangest assortments of volcanic rock anywhere in the world. Lana’i is the most secluded island in Hawaii and is also the island that Bill Gates rented for his wedding. 31

Jesse Richman is one of the youngest pro kiteboarders in the world. At age 13 he has competed in some of the largest kiteboarding events in the sport including the prestigious Red Bull King of the Air. Jesse’s brother, Shawn, is also a hard charger. Together the Richman brothers are two of the hottest, upcoming groms out of Maui. I caught up with Jesse between sessions, and this is what he had to say.

When and where did you start kiteboarding? In the fall of 2002 at Kitebeach is where it all started. Do you ever get punked out for being one of the youngest pros? Not yet and hopefully not ever.

What is it like growing up at Kitebeach surrounded by some of the best riders in the world? It is cool to learn new tricks off of them, on and off the water. What is your view on contests? If it is a well run contest, it is awesome.

What riders influence you most? My brother Shawn for everything, the Crazy Ruben Lenten for tricks and the awesome Greg Drexler in the waves.

Do you and your brother ever fight after you beat one another in a contest? Not yet!

We know you are a young buck, but do you have any pretty lady friends chasing you around? If I knew of any they would not have to chase me.

What is the hardest move you are trying to learn? A double kiteloop to slim chance over the rocks to blind.

What do you do off the water to help you on the water? My schedule is simple: sleep, eat, kite, sleep, eat, and kite.

What is something about you that you do outside of kiteboarding that most people wouldn’t know? If they don’t know, I probably wouldn’t want them to.

Where is your favorite place to ride and why? Outer Kanaha break when it is HUGE; because it is soo fricking scary.

Are you planning on sticking with school, or do you have dreams of traveling the world as a professional kiteboarder? Now with an internet school I am doing both.

I first saw Gisela in action in 2003. I was with Kitexcite in Cabarete and saw this man walking a young girl down to the water held only by her harness, as her feet danced in the air. He then flung her into the ocean and I thought “is this guy crazy?” The man was Gisela’s father, who is an inspiration and driving force behind her passion for kiting and success in competition. The girl, Gisela, proceeded to tear it up. She was nine years old at the time.

How did you first get into kitesurfing? When I first saw my father kitesurf with his friends, I was hooked. It was a hot June day in Barcelona with a thermal breeze of 12 knots. It is a day that I will never forget.

What do you do off the water to help you on the water? I look at videos and other riders to improve. My father also coaches me which helps me to constantly progress.

What’s it like being the youngest rider on the tour? Being a professional is incredible. I really enjoy the trips and competitions motivate me to continue improving my riding and form.

How come you chose to compete on the KPWT circuit instead of the PKRA? I want to participate in both but in the PKRA there is a limitation of 14 years old to compete. I don’t think it’s fair.

What riders influence you most? When I was nine years old, it was Bertrand Fleury who impressed me the most in Cabarete. When I was 10, Ruben Lenten influenced me with his aggressive style. Now I admire Tom Hebert. I think he is the best. He is very technical, and combines an aggressive and air style at the same time.

Where is your favorite place to ride and why? My favorite place to ride is Tarifa because there I ride next to my friends.

Do the girls on tour treat you as a little girl, younger sister or one of the crew? I believe that they consider me one more on the circuit. I have earned their respect with my riding. You’ve been athletic your whole life. Did you kick the boys’ butts in sports? Yes, in Barcelona I was eight years old and swam in competition. I always competed with the boys of my age. 34

How many places have you and your Dad been to this year and where would you like to go that you haven’t been to yet? This year trip we’ve been to Italy, Turkey, Brazil, Austria, France, Australia, Morocco and New Caledonia. I also traveled a lot in Spain, my home country. I would like to go to South Africa for the waves but my schedule is very tight. What is your view on contests? I like competitions as I get to experience new countries and make new friends. The best though is getting together again and seeing the boys on the circuit. They are my friends and inspire me.

What got you into kiteboarding, and what was it like being one of the first pros on the East Coast? I windsurfed for about 15 years and heard a rumor that you could fly a kite while standing on a surfboard and jump in excess of 20-feet high without that much wind. Being one of the first was amazing and sometimes dangerous. We had to learn from our mistakes without lessons. Watching the sport grow and the crossover of people getting into it, while teaching and competing all over the US, will be a time in my life I will never forget.

Neil Hutchinson is one of the early pioneers of kiteboarding on the East Coast. Based out of Fort Lauderdale, Neil launched Xrated Kiteboarding three years ago and has hosted some of the biggest, non competition riding events such as the British Virgin Island and Dominican Republic riding parties. Recovering from a broken knee last year, Neil was inspired to create the Bahamas Kite Crossing, which evolved into one of the most legitimate competitive crossing events in the world. Contestants raced from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Bimini, Bahamas, accompanied by helicopters and chase boats. Known for always having a cigarette hanging out of his mouth on the beach, Neil’s crooked smile and warm personality comes straight from a heart of gold that has touched kiteboarders around the world.

What was the equipment like back then compared to now? You had about three different kites to choose from with a choice of two kinds of boards, which no one had any idea what was better— no chicken loops, no trim lines and so on. Now there are so many kite and board companies along with different designs. You can actually get equipment to suit your wants.

What do you do in your free time outside of kiteboarding? [Neil chuckles] Drink! No really, kiteboarding is my life, but every now and then when I cannot find wind anywhere, I enjoy just hanging out with my girlfriend and friends. Everyone always talks about the Xrated Tiki Bar in your backyard—is it true you built a full scale bar back there? For sure! It was summer about four years ago, with typical summer conditions here in South Florida—no wind. All my friends would come over, and we would sit around in my backyard complaining about the lack of wind, which normally led into several trips to the store for more beer. I decided, the hell with it, let’s build a kiteboarders bar; it is bound to be popular as everyone is already here. So, with the help of some friends, we built it complete with all round lumber, a thatched roof, a commercial cooler, surround sound music, and TV/DVD and the Tiki Bar was born.

Rumor has it you hold a world record for the longest distance traveled on a kiteboard! Tell us about this accomplishment. It was the greatest day of my life! Kiteboarding from Florida to Cuba was kind of like my Mount Everest that no one had ever challenged. That day did change my life. You have organized many riding parties and contests over the years. Besides your latest Bahamas Crossing, what is the most memorable event? The most memorable apart from the Bahamas event had to be our Xrated Kiteboarding riding party in the British Virgin Islands. There was a total of about 25 people, with a full mixture of pro- riders and average Joe and Jane’s from all over the world. We spent an entire week at the world famous five star resort, The Bitter End Yacht Club, and traveled around to neighboring islands on a multi-million dollar catamaran. The name “Neil Hutchinson” and “Xrated Kiteboarding are legendary in the Caribbean. What is your favorite destination to travel, and why does everyone seem to know you everywhere? The Caribbean over the years has been my second home. I love the islands and the attitude of the people that live there. Many of them have become very close friends of mine. When people love the same thing in life, they seem to flock together. All of the Caribbean is amazing, but one of my most favorites is Cabarete in the Dominican Republic. It has everything and is not expensive. You do not need a car. The hotel is on the beach along with the bars and restaurants. The nightlife kicks ass, and there is reliable steady wind. You do not need a wetsuit, you can do downwinders through waves and it only takes a $2 cab fee to get back. If you do get skunked, Extreme Hotels has a full on half pipe for skateboarding, and they work closely with a top notch wakeboard school just down the road.

What is Xrated Kiteboarding about, and what are your plans for the future? Xrated is mainly a kiteboarder’s travel company taking people to places to kite they would never normally go. For example, we tour people to the BVI’s sometimes deserted islands, and we have done week trips to the DR showing people the secret spots to ride. Lately, due to a knee injury, we have been spending more efforts on the organization of events, contests and teaching. This year we hopefully will be working with a large sailing trimaran in the southern Caribbean offering all inclusive trips around the islands. What made you want to step up to the plate and promote the Bahamas Crossing, and will you do it again? It all came from the experience I had going to Cuba and how it changed my life. I have always wanted to be able to share that feeling with others. It wasn’t until I broke my knee last April and spent three months in bed with nothing to do that I had the time to put it together. I focused my time not on what I could not do, but on what I could not do before my accident. It will be an annual

I am super stoked that safety is getting much better, but the whole cleat-able five line thing and battens in kites is definitely opening new doors. I have to say as a lazy kiteboarder, I could not live without one pump any more! Is it true that you love kiteboarding so much you tattooed a picture of Robby Naish on your ankle? However, if you’re interested in riding acres of pristine wilderness with just a handful of buddies, then it’s time to discover the best kept secret on the East Coast.

Usual wind direction Northeast is the most consistent, but the Seaside is a 360º spot. When it blows SW, most riders head to the Cape Charles beachfront.

Where should I stay? There are options for all budgets. B&B’s are great for convincing your sweetie to take the trip. Camping at Kiptopeke State Park (walk to the beach to ride in SW, W, & NW) is easy and cheap. There are several hotels and rental houses in and around Cape Charles. For the ultimate Seaside experience, arrange to stay at one of the 100-year-old Oyster Watch houses.

What is the official site name? The Virginia Coast Reserve refers to the barrier islands owned by the Nature Conservancy, but the locals just refer to the area as “the Seaside”.

What is the best time of year to hit this spot? September through November are the best months followed by April through early June. The summer is hit or miss, but you can ride almost every day if you have a skimboard in your quiver.

How do I get there? Norfolk International Airport is just 25 miles to the south. From the D.C./Annapolis area, drive down Highway 13. Once you get to the Shore you will need a boat to get out to the Seaside, but there are several great riding spots you can drive right up to on the bayside of the peninsula.

What are the best conditions to get lucky? Nor’easters blow for days on end in the spring and fall, but most frontal systems push 15-25kt winds through for a couple of days. 40

What conditions should I avoid? The big things to avoid here are summer thunderstorms. If you see dark clouds building with the wind, you’re going to want to ride close to the mainland and keep an eye on the weather. If the weather begins to change, get off the water. As with riding any location, stay alert because you’re on your own out here.

What gear should I be sure to pack? The best thing about kiting is that it’s pretty easy to bring a full quiver of kites with you, but be sure to bring a kite repair kit. Field repairs have saved many sessions on the Shore.

What is the water temp like? Since the water is generally 2-4 feet deep, it heats up quickly. Riders are often in trunks well

into the Fall. Virginia is a full on four season region; the water temp ranges from 40 degrees 80 degrees Farenheit over the course of the year.

What is the launch? Many of the barrier islands are owned by the Nature Conservancy, so you need to be respectful of their rules and limitations. Most locals boat launch, or use the edges of the wide sandy beaches and sand bars.There are several areas of high marsh with solid ground for setting up gear as well.

What are some of the better places to eat? Sting Rays is an Eastern Shore classic, and the Pelican Pub is right on the water so you can ride the Chesapeake Bay under the setting sun

and have your waitress bring your Pina Colada right to the water’s edge for a mid-session break.

What else is there to do if I get skunked? The salt marshes that create all those acres of flat water also provide incredible sea kayaking opportunities. Go surfing at nearby Assateague Island or Virginia Beach. Take the family to see the wild ponies and other attractions of Chincoteague Island. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel was recently named one of the top 10 salt-water fishing spots in the world. Sunsets over the water are a rare East Coast treat, and the Schooner Serenity sails you right into the best seat in the house every evening. Nearby Tangier Island is a working waterman’s town that time has all but forgotten.

Is there anything else I need to know about riding this spot? The water is shallow and the sand bars shift, so a local captain is a huge plus on any trip. Boat support is not expensive if you have 3 or 4 riders, and it’s worth every penny. You can do it on your own, but call the local shops and ask for all the free advice they’re willing to give you. Cell phone coverage is surprisingly clear on the Seaside, so take one along for added safety. Last but not least, file a float plan with someone.

Are there any safety issues or rules I need to know about the Seaside? The Nature Conservancy has created this preserve because of the area’s vital importance to migrating birds. Check out their website (http://nature.org/) and follow their rules. Do not

play in the inlets between the islands. The water gets real deep very quickly and the currents can be very strong. It can be a lot of fun to ride the slick water inside of one island and then cut out to the surf for the next one, but you won’t find locals screwing around too much in between.

Are there any interesting bits of trivia I should know about this spot? The barrier islands were major tourism destinations 100 years ago, and you can still see the remnants of hotels, towns, and Coast Guard stations out there. In the middle of the marsh, cabins on stilts were used by watermen to keep guard over their oyster grounds. Poaching disputes were often solved with shotguns. Navy SEALs from Norfolk are rumored to train in the area quite regularly. 41
