Announcing the Latest Upgrade to the ColorBurst RIP Release Notes for ColorBurst 7.31 ColorBurst 7.31 is now available for download. With this new version you can take advantage of the following new features. 1. New “Printer Options” dialog box There’s a new look to the Printer Options dialog box. All the general settings are grouped into one place. Cut marks and I-Cut functions have been added to this convenient tabbed dialog box.

a. General tab The General tab still has the basic functions that have always been in the Printer Options dialog box. New are the Layout area and resolution group’s fields for X axis and Y axis resolution.

b. TCP/IP tab The TCP/IP tab is used to RIP to an inkjet printer other than a VUTEk printer. ColorBurst supports many of the wide format inkjet printers (such as HP, Epson, Mutoh, and so on).

c. Cut Marks tab All the cut mark controls are now grouped together on the Cut Marks tab. In the Position marks group, all four sides are now independent of each other. Enter separate margins for left and right, as well as for the top and bottom.

To use cut marks, on the Cut Marks tab, check the Print cut marks box. Click on the mark shape that you want to use. When choosing marks, ColorBurst makes any fields that are not used by the currently selected mark style unavailable (unavailable fields are grayed out).

d. Job Titles tab The features in the Job Titles tab have been expanded. i. One of the new features is the Comments field, where you can add comments to the job title (which is printed at the top of each image in a layout). ii. The Job Titles tab now includes an option for including the Layout Title in the print. The Layout Title shows the name of the .rtl file. (for example, 023_calibrate_overprint_PV600.rtl) The Job Title is printed above each image in the layout; the Layout Title is printed at the top of the print. iii. The Job Title tab now shows the point size of the job title and the layout title. The job title margin (vertical space) is shown in the active units such as inches (Note: Points cannot used as a unit of measure).

Note: I-Cut Users: When printing a job for the I-Cut, it is important to know the name of the layout. The I-Cut file will have the same file name, but with an extension of .cut. The Layout Title helps you choose the correct .cut file. Note: When Using CLF files. When a CLF is opened, in order to preserve the positioning of images in a layout, the “Print Job Titles. Inhibit Layout Titles” option must be selected. When a Layout Title is used ColorBurst must force an Auto Refit.

e. Cut Devices tab The Cut Devices tab is a new tab that contains the settings needed to use ColorBurst with an I-Cut device. i. It is now possible to have your cut file (path) and graphic file in the same file. ii. When using I-Cut, VUTEk recommends the use a vector-based applications (such as Adobe® Illustrator® or Macromedia FreeHand).

f. Using ColorBurst and the PressVu Printer with the I-Cut device Use this procedure to initiate the I-Cut support. i. In Adobe Illustrator or a similar application open the image that will be printed and cut. Create a path defining the areas to be cut out and set the color of the path to a spot color. This spot color channel will be used in ColorBurst to build the .cut file that will be used by the I-Cut device. ii. Open the Printer Options Settings dialog box. 1. In the Cut Marks tab • Click on Print cut marks. • Click on Circles to choose circular cut marks. • Set the dimensions to be 0.25 inches. This is the standard default size for the I-Cut camera to see. 2. In the Job Titles tab • Check “Job Titles.” • Check “Print Layout title, inhibit job titles.” 3. In the Cut Devices tab • Check “Search PostScript files for named colors that describe contours.” • In the “Specify named colors that describe contours” box, enter the exact spelling of the spot color (or choose it from the list if previously entered) that was assigned to the path in Illustrator. • Click Add. When the file finishes ripping, both an .rtl file to print and a .cut file for the I-Cut device will have been created. ColorBurst will have automatically added registration marks at the corners of each image — there is no need to create the marks in the original file. Note: Make sure that PressVu datastream title is off (when it’s on, it takes space on the printed board that the ColorBurst layout does not adjust for).

2. ColorBurst has now Licensed the Pantone® library ColorBurst has recently contracted directly with Pantone to license the entire Pantone Library in its AutoSpot feature. This will ensure faster support for changes in Pantones Libraries.

3. Streamlined menus: Layout Options and Output Options This will help to reduce the possibility of customers picking settings in ColorBurst that are not used with the VUTEk printers.

4. ColorBurst Expressway – Mac to PC File Transfer Made Easy CSE has developed a new File and Print Server for Windows 2000, 2003 and XP named ColorBurst Expressway. There are two parts: The Server application for the Windows platform and the Client application for Mac OS 9 and OS X. ColorBurst Expressway allows a Mac (OS 9 & OS X) to Print to a ColorBurst Rip as a Chooser Level Printer using IP protocol. The Mac client application also features a “drop box” to copy files such as EPS, PDF and TIFFs directly to the Rip. For further details refer to the complete instructions available in the following files C:\CBVutek_73\Expressway Server\ColorBurst Expressway.pdf and Readme - New Info.txt During the installation of ColorBurst, a Desktop Icon for the ColorBurst Expressway is automatically place on the RIP Workstations Desktop.

5. Notes On Using Adobe Illustrator Files with ColorBurst Problem 1: Adobe Illustrator CS fixes a bug in Illustrator 9 and 10. Illustrator CS properly reports the Tint (%) value for a Named Spot Color in the PostScript code. If a Swatch color has the Color Type set to SPOT Color and the Tint percentage set to anything other than 100% (i.e. 50%) the default settings in ColorBurst will RIP it as 100%.

Solution to Illustrator 9 and 10 bug: Open the Color Adjustment menu in ColorBurst and set the Screening Finish to “Smooth Blends”. When Smooth Blends is selected, ColorBurst uses the information in the EPS file for Separated data, which contains the proper Named Spot Color Tint Value.

Which Screening Pattern should you use? Fast Images vs. Smooth Blends In the ColorAdjust there are four screening patterns available. For the VUTEk Printers only the Smooth Blends or Fast Images are commonly used. The following is a description of the benefits when using one of these screening finishes. Smooth Blends This is the default screening finish for most of the Page Setup files supplied with ColorBurst. This is will make vector gradients smoother. Fast Images With this screening pattern selected files will RIP about twice as fast as with Smooth Blends. If you do not have vector gradients this is a good choice.
