You will be assessed on

Prepare a short (3 min) speech in favour of or against a particular idea. Follow the guidelines below.

Your speech will be delivered in front of the class, using notes, and not read straight from a written essay. STEP ONE Choose a statement to agree or disagree with. The list below will help, but you may make up your own statement if you wish. 1. The majority of time spent at school is wasted. 2. All tobacco and alcohol advertising should be banned. 3. Family holidays should be paid for on the National Health. 4. Men/women should re-take their natural position in society. 5. The internet will revolutionise the lives of every human being. 6. Animals deserve a higher place in modern society. 7. Science is the most important academic subject. 8. Foreign players should not be allowed to play in British teams. 9. Voting is a waste of time and effort. 10. Today’s fashion industry should be dismantled piece by piece. 11. Life’s what you make it. 12. Eastenders is better than Coronation Street. 13. Living forever would be a wonderful thing. 14. Health clubs/leisure centres/ supermarkets/DIY stores/pubs/ nightclubs/cinemas are more important than churches. 15. It’s good to talk.

STEP TWO Jot down a list of about 10 things you could say both for and against your statement. STEP THREE Decide which way you want to argue and highlight about 6 good points from your list. Put these points into a logical order so that one follows from another, or so that the points get stronger as you go on. STEP FOUR Now add detail to each one - real life examples, statistics, stories of personal experience. STEP FIVE Write your speech up into a fluent essay form, including an introduction and conclusion. STEP SIX Copy your speech into note form on a piece of paper, or on small cards. STEP SEVEN Practise delivering your speech using only your notes.
