And the place to promenade in such a garment would be St. Roch in Québec City, the focus of our Neighbourhood feature, a restored waterfront strip of cutting-edge boutiques. For those who want to get maximum wear from their resort collections, a trip to Harbor Country – a string of rural idylls east of Chicago along the Lake Michigan shore, as profiled in our Weekender feature – should provide ample catwalking opportunities. One woman resolutely above the fashion fray is HM Queen Elizabeth II, and Porter was honoured to welcome Her Majesty on board during her recent trip to Canada. A record of the event is highlighted in this issue – a proud moment for an airline that values style and substance.

The story of St. Roch, an emerging neigbourhood about a kilometre west of Québec City’s Old Port, is a kind of parable for the modern city. Settled around 1620 by Récollets – Franciscan missionaries from France – St. Roch had its first flourishing in the late 19th century, thanks to a robust shipbuilding industry. By the turn of the 20th century, the compact waterfront community had become the city’s commercial centre. Then, in the 1960s, shopping malls arrived, drawing people out of St. Roch and into the suburbs. Local businesses, along with the municipal government, suggested a creative antidote to this urban flight: in 1970, they barred cars from the neighbourhood’s main drag, St. Joseph Street, and began construction on a half-kilometre-long roof overhead. The outdoor mall concept, it turned out, worked best on paper: the sheltered promenade soon became a gathering place for drug dealers and prostitutes. Businesses faltered and the neighbourhood fell into disrepair. In 1989, Mayor Jean-Paul L’Allier took office. In short order, he established the awardwinning St. Roch Garden, restoring the neighbourhood’s soul, and setting in motion a process that included the revitalization of countless historic buildings and, ultimately, the removal of the dreaded roof. Meanwhile, the neighbourhood’s stunning century-old architecture began attracting an influx of cultural organizations, schools and businesses. The commercial heart of the district still beats most loudly on St. Joseph Street, where business regulations dictate that any new store must offer shoppers something they can find nowhere else in town. The result is an emerging strip of interesting boutiques, many of which are run by local residents who are passionate about their businesses and their neighbourhood.

L’histoire de Saint-Roch, un voisinage qui retrouve sa splendeur passée à environ un kilomètre à l’ouest du Vieux-Port de Québec, est une sorte de parabole de la ville moderne. Fondé vers 1620 par les Récollets, des missionnaires franciscains français, SaintRoch connaît sa première période faste à la fin du XIXe siècle, grâce aux chantiers navals. Au XXe siècle, la petite communauté du littoral devient le centre commercial de la ville. Puis, dans les années 1960, l’arrivée des centres commerciaux éloigne la population vers les banlieues. Les entreprises locales et la municipalité suggèrent alors un antidote à cet exode urbain : en 1970, la circulation est interdite sur l’artère principale, la rue Saint-Joseph, et on la recouvre d’un toit de 500 m de long. Ce concept de centre commercial en plein-air était meilleur en théorie qu’en pratique : la promenade couverte se transforme vite en lieu de rassemblement pour les dealers et les prostituées. Les entreprises périclitent et le voisinage se détériore. En 1989, Jean-Paul L’Allier devient maire. En peu de temps il établit le Jardin de Saint-Roch, lauréat de plusieurs prix, et redonne une âme au voisinage en mettant en marche la rénovation d’une multitude de demeures historiques et, en fin de compte, il fait enlever le toit funeste. Entre-temps, l’architecture ancienne du voisinage avait attiré un flux d’organismes culturels, des écoles et de nouvelles entreprises. Le cœur commercial du quartier bat toujours dans la rue SaintJoseph, là où la réglementation sur les entreprises impose que tout nouveau magasin doit offrir aux chalands quelque chose d’unique qu’ils ne trouveront nulle part ailleurs en ville. Le résultat est visible sous la forme de boutiques intéressantes, la plupart tenues par des gens du coin qui ont une véritable passion pour leur affaire et pour leur voisinage. 7

At Le Clocher Penché, Éric Fontaine and Mathieu Brisson use locally sourced ingredients to create sophisticated yet down-to-earth bistro fare. Their weekend brunch will turn any blood sausage agnostic into a believer; the boudin is served with a piglet terrine and a softboiled egg, atop crispy veggies. Dinner offers similarly swine-heavy options, but the highlight at night: delicate salmon tartare, served with grapefruit, will leave you wondering if you’ve ever understood before what fresh truly means. Au Clocher Penché, Éric Fontaine et Mathieu Brisson utilisent des ingrédients locaux pour créer des plats de style bistro sophistiqués, mais réconfortants. Locals craving a taste of PEI or New Brunswick head to Versa, a lively oyster bar with superlative cocktails and a cellar stocked with 225 different wines. Sommelier Christian Veilleux, who earned a Wine Spectator Award last year, is always keen to suggest a pairing for chef Benoît Poliquin’s eccentric menu, which bounces from foie gras doughnuts to Scotch eggs to whiskey-soaked General Tso chicken. “We serve French bistro classics with a Québécois touch, and some global flavour,” says Poliquin. “We focus on food that is simple, delicious and honest.” Les gens du coin qui ont envie de spécialités de l’IPE ou du Nouveau-Brunswick vont au Versa, un bar à huîtres animé qui sert des cocktails fabuleux et dont la cave abrite 225 vins. La Barberie

Partake in Québec’s most sacred ritual – the cinq à sept – on the vast, sun-soaked deck that flanks this microbrewery. Founded in 1996 by three bearded buddies, La Barberie (“the barbershop”) offers a rotating selection of a dozen-plus beers, including, sometimes, a lime-and-ginger pale ale, an organic blonde and a malty stout. Indecisive tipplers should order the carrousel de galopins – a wheel holding eight varieties in five-ounce taster glasses. Once you pick your favourite, you can take it home: La Barberie offers handled mason jars to go. Colours are unwelcome at Boutique Philippe Dubuc, where a stark palette of gray, black and white informs both the decor and the clothing. The celebrated menswear designer’s first non-Montréal outpost, located improbably in a former Zellers department store, does not disappoint; polished concrete floors, exposedbrick walls and steel beams – covered for years – have been restored and repainted to minimalist perfection, serving now as a fitting showcase for Dubuc’s slightly shiny, slim-cut wool-blend suits, flat-front trousers and cotton skinny ties. Les couleurs sont bannies chez Philippe Dubuc où une palette sombre de gris, noir et blanc constitue l’essentiel de la déco et des vêtements. Ce magasin du fameux couturier pour homme, le premier en dehors de Montréal, est situé dans un ancien magasin Zellers ! Maison de Thé Camellia Sinensis Slurp loudly and proudly at this warm, welcoming tea shop; allowing the molecules to pass over your lips and tongue more slowly makes it easier to appreciate the tea’s nuanced flavours. Indeed, much of the Camellia Sinensis experience is about subtlety and education. After a tasting session with passionate owner Jasmin Desharnais, you’ll not only know your qian li xiang from your da hong pao (or one of 200-plus others), but you might also wind up being quite handy with the zhong. Unless, that is, you prefer a senchado? N’ayez pas peur de faire du bruit en buvant votre breuvage dans ce salon de thé accueillant. The VIP entrance to Benjo – Québec’s answer to FAO Schwarz – is about four feet high. The message is very clear: in this establishment, kids rule. Still, few grownups will have trouble accessing their inner child once they enter this flashbackinducing megastore. It’s all here: elaborate model train sets, Star Wars figures, storybooks, board games galore and enough stuffed animals to fill Noah’s Ark twice over. Of course, there’s a traditional candy shop in here, too, complete with a selfserve Pucker Powder station, and what is surely St. Roch’s largest gumball machine. Chez Benjo – la réponse de Québec à FAO Schwarz – l’entrée des VIP ne fait guère que 1,20 m de hauteur. Le message est clair : ici, les enfants sont rois. Mais la plupart des adultes retrouveront bien vite leur âme d’enfant dans ce mégastore juvénile. I’m originally from Québec City, and when I left to study in Montréal, I swore I’d never come back. But I moved back and I love it now. I live just above my shop, so I’m always in the neighbourhood. It has such a great mix of modern and rustic; it’s incredible to have this boutique in a building that looks like it was built in 18th-century France. The city is so committed to preserving its historic character; they don’t even want to replace the old parking meters! Je suis né à Québec et quand je l’ai quittée pour étudier à Montréal, j’ai juré de ne jamais y revenir. Mais me voilà de retour. J’habite au-dessus de ma boutique, alors je suis toujours dans le coin. Il y a un mélange génial de moderne et de rustique ; c’est incroyable d’avoir cette boutique dans un bâtiment très XVIIIe siècle français. La ville est déterminée à préserver son caractère. Même les parcmètres sont protégés.

This is an ideal neighbourhood for artists; there are so many studios and galleries here. It’s accessible, too – you don’t need a car to get around. In addition to artists, we have business people here during the workday, an immigrant community, and the working-class residents who’ve been here for many years. There are great new stores that – I hope – will promote Québécois creativity, while allowing the neighbourhood to retain its character. C’est un voisinage idéal pour les artistes : il y a tant de studios et de galeries. Et tout est à portée de main, on n’a pas besoin de voiture. Il y a aussi les employés durant les heures de bureau, une communauté d’immigrants et les ouvriers qui sont ici depuis bien des années. Il y a également de nouveaux magasins super qui, je l’espère, vont encourager la créativité québécoise tout en permettant au voisinage de conserver son caractère.

For local residents, there is no greater symbol of the neighbourhood’s revitalization than the St. Roch Garden, which was established in 1992 on a vacant industrial lot. Now the meticulous gardens buzz with activity as flâneurs idle on shaded benches and nine-tofivers zen out around the 40-foothigh cascading water fountain. Local art students, meanwhile, come here for inspiration, courtesy of the iconic Canadian artists René Richard, Alfred Pellan and Horatio Walker, whose busts dot the square. Pour les résidents, rien ne symbolise mieux la renaissance du voisinage que le Jardin de Saint-Roch, fondé en 1992 sur un site industriel désaffecté. What I love most about St. Roch is its diversity; the population here ranges from the well-to-do to the poor. In recent years, video game companies have arrived, and so there’s been an influx of young professionals. But there is still a strong collective will to continue the revitalization project started by the team of Mayor L’Allier, and to stay focused on reviving St. Roch as it reclaims its place at the centre of Québec City. Ce que j’apprécie le plus à Saint-Roch, c’est sa diversité ; la population comprend gens aisés et pauvres. Ces dernières années, avec l’arrivée des entreprises de jeux vidéo, il y a eu un afflux de main-d’œuvre jeune. Mais, il existe toujours une volonté commune de poursuivre le projet de réhabilitation lancé par l’équipe du maire L’Allier, la volonté de continuer à faire revivre le voisinage de Saint-Roch pour qu’il retrouve sa place au centre de la ville de Québec.

Méduse is a modern, sprawling multidisciplinary cultural centre comprising four restored, now-connected historic buildings, which house 10 not-forprofit organizations. Visitors may roam the hallways, poking their heads into working artists’ studios and residences, several galleries, a theatre and even a functioning radio station. Our favourite destinations include Antitube, a gallery focused on images from Québec’s past and its future, and La Bande Vidéo, a hub of contemporary video art. La Méduse est un centre culturel moderne multidisciplinaires, composé de quatre bâtiments anciens restaurés et reliés entre eux, qui héberge dix organismes à but non lucratif. Our innovation with FashionTelevision was to treat the scene with real irreverence. We wanted to get beyond questions like “Why beige?” or “What’s this season’s silhouette?” We wanted to find out about the personalities behind the clothes, whether they were supermodels or designers. Now, after 25 years, I’m on first-name terms with Karl [Lagerfeld] and Jean-Paul [Gaultier], and I’ve perfected the art of air-kissing.

Jeanne Beker knows fashion. A self-confessed cheerleader for homegrown design, Beker is host of Canada’s leading fashion series, CTV’s FashionTelevision; a regular contributor for The Globe and Mail; a published author of three books (and currently working on two new books for release in spring 2011); and is set to launch a new clothing line with The Bay – before celebrating FT’s 25th anniversary this fall. Clothes can be very empowering. Fashion has great transformational qualities. I love the whole psychology of dressing and sartorial expression. I’ve done my own lines before, and I have a new one coming out at The Bay in September called Edit. It’s a capsule collection of about 20 pieces, honing the season’s key items – the Great Jacket, the Must-Have Dress. It’s for all the mothers and daughters alike who’ve grown up watching me. Nothing’s going to be more than $200. I’m a great cheerleader for Canadian designers. But having the US sitting below us, well, we’re regarded slightly as the poor relation. So I look at myself as a kind of ambassador for Canadian fashion. Ninety percent of my wardrobe is by Canadian designers, with a bit of Chanel and Louboutin mixed in there. Who do I rate? Lida Baday is great. Joeffer Caoc is brilliant. Of the younger ones, Mikhael Kale is very innovative. I wear a lot of stuff by these two guys who call themselves Greta Constantine, and there’s a fellow based in London called Mark Fast who designs for Top Shop and uses plus-size models, while Todd Lynn has dressed Bono and styled The Rolling Stones. Our best designers are out there cracking the international market.

Am I the grande dame of the Canadian fashion scene? As long as that title doesn’t make me sound old, it’s OK. I guess I’ve been in people’s lives with FashionTelevision for the past 25 years, so it fits.

I originally wanted to be an actor. I started acting at 16, in a CBC sitcom called Toby. I had no experience, but I’ve always had a lot of chutzpah. I went to Paris to study mime in the mid70s, when it was a hot thing to do. Then I got married and moved out to Newfoundland. There was a big arts scene there, and no one was really reporting on it, so I stepped into the breach; in 1978, I moved back to Toronto where I landed a job at 1050 CHUM and was known as the Good News Girl because I’d add little arts and entertainment stories to the news bulletins. Then, in 1979, I helped launch a music magazine show called The NewMusic. It was pre-MTV and very groundbreaking. I went on tour with The Police when they were playing to 60 people. I cozied up in hotel rooms to interview the likes of Keith Richards and Robert Plant. But after six years, I was like, if I have to interview Rod Stewart one more time, I’ll lose it. I was getting a little too old to be riding those smoky tour buses, and my vinyl jeans were getting a little tight. So I thought, where else can I meet people with huge egos and colourful characters? And fashion immediately came to mind. I’d always had a great passion for fashion. I was the first on my block to have go-go boots in the 60s. It speaks of sensuality, playfulness, individuality… all the things that really appeal to me.

Au départ je voulais devenir actrice. J’ai commencé à 16 ans en jouant un rôle dans Toby, une sitcom de CBC. Je n’avais aucune expérience, mais j’ai toujours eu beaucoup de culot. Au milieu des années 1970, je suis allée à Paris pour apprendre le mime, c’était à la mode à l’époque. Puis, je me suis mariée et je me suis installée à Terre-Neuve qui avait une activité artistique intense. J’ai saisi ma chance. En 1978, je suis retournée à Toronto et j’ai dégoté un job à 1050 CHUM. On m’appelait la « fille des bonnes nouvelles » parce que je présentais de petits sujets sur l’art et les spectacles pendant les informations. En 1979, j’ai participé au lancement d’une émission musicale baptisée The NewMusic. C’était avant l’arrivée de MTV et très avant-gardiste. J’ai suivi The Police en tournée quand ils jouaient devant à peine 60 personnes. Je me retrouvais souvent dans le même hôtel que Keith Richards et Robert Plant. Mais, après six ans, je me suis dit que si je devais encore interviewer Rod Stewart pour la énième fois j’allais exploser. Les autocars enfumés des tournées et mes jeans étaient devenus un peu trop étroits pour moi. Je me suis demandé où je pourrais rencontrer d’autres personnes à l’ego surdimensionné et la réponse immédiate a été : la mode. J’ai toujours eu une passion pour ça. Dans les années 1960 j’ai été

My proudest moment? Well, I carried the Olympic torch earlier this year in British Columbia. I got a Crystal Award for lifetime achievement in 2006. And I just got an honorary degree from Humber College, which was such a thrill. I’ve always been a champion of the school of hard knocks, but to stand and address a crowd of 1,500 kids, and tell them to believe in themselves, to never be afraid or give up … it was very inspiring. My parents are Holocaust survivors, and that message is deeply ingrained in me. And I never expected to have a Bratz doll based on me. It was a limited-edition “fashion reporter” doll complete with black suit, microphone, notebook and backstage pass. I travel to Paris and to New York at least four times a year. My packing advice? Edit, edit, edit. I take a lot of black, and a lot of matte jersey fabrics that don’t crease. It’s all about pieces now – things that mix and match. You’ve got to have a little black dress that can take you from day to night. I always take more shoes than I should, but I always like to maximize my options. Do I want to continue at this speed until I’m my mother’s age – nearly 90? No. But my idea of retirement would be to shift my energies in another direction. I don’t know how much longer I want to be running after Karl Lagerfeld in my stilettos, but I can see myself travelling for fun, spending more time on my farm outside Toronto, writing a novel, doing a one-woman stage show, becoming a motivational speaker. There’s plenty of life in me yet.

Aujourd’hui, 25 ans plus tard, je suis à tu et à toi avec Karl [Lagerfeld] et Jean-Paul [Gaultier] et je maîtrise à la perfection les baisers affectés. Les vêtements peuvent vraiment donner de l’assurance. La mode vous change. J’adore la psychologie de l’habillement et de l’expression vestimentaire. J’ai déjà produit ma propre ligne et à La Baie, en septembre, je vais en sortir une autre baptisée Edit. C’est une collection capsule d’environ 20 articles qui améliore des classiques comme la Super Veste ou la petiterobe-indispensable. Elle est destinée aux mères et aux filles qui ont grandi en me regardant. Rien ne coûtera plus de 200 $. Je suis un ardent défenseur des designers canadiens. Mais du fait de la proximité des États-Unis, on nous considère comme le cousin pauvre. Alors, je suis comme une sorte d’ambassadeur de la mode canadienne. Ma garde-robe est à 90 % canadienne avec un peu de Chanel et de Louboutin. Mes préférés ? J’aime Linda Baday. Joeffer Caoc est génial. L’un des jeunes, Mikhael Kale, est très novateur. Je porte beaucoup de créations de deux chums qui s’appellent Greta Constantine et il y a un gars de Londres, Mark Fast, qui dessine pour Top Shop et fait appel à des mannequins tailles plus. Par ailleurs, Todd Lynn habille Bono et crée un style pour les Rolling Stones. Nos meilleurs éléments s’attaquent au marché international. Mon plus grand moment ? Cette année, j’ai porté le Flambeau olympique en Colombie-Britannique. En 2006, on m’a donné un Crystal Award pour l’ensemble de ma carrière. Et Humber College vient de me décerner un diplôme d’honneur. J’ai toujours relevé les défis de l’école de l’adversité, aussi, j’ai savouré l’instant où j’ai pris la parole devant 1 500 jeunes pour leur dire de croire en eux-mêmes, de ne jamais avoir peur et de ne jamais baisser les bras. Mes parents ont survécu à l’Holocauste et ce message est profondément enraciné en moi. Et je ne m’attendais pas à voir une poupée Bratz à mon effigie ! C’est une poupée reporter en édition limitée avec son ensemble noir, son micro, son calepin et son passe pour les coulisses. Je vais à Paris et à New York au moins quatre fois par an. Mes conseils pour la valise ? Simplifier. J’emporte beaucoup de vêtements noirs, de jersey qui ne se froissent pas. Aujourd’hui on fait plus d’associations. Il faut avoir une petite robe noire qui ira aussi bien pour la journée que la soirée. J’emporte toujours trop de chaussures parce que j’aime avoir le choix. Vais-je continuer à ce rythme jusqu’à ce que j’aie l’âge de ma mère (90 ans) ? Non. Mais ma conception de la retraite, c’est de consacrer mon énergie à autre chose. Je ne sais pas encore combien de temps je vais continuer à suivre Karl Lagerfeld en talons aiguilles, mais je me vois bien voyager pour le plaisir, passer plus de temps à ma ferme des environs de Toronto, écrire un roman, faire un one-woman show ou faire des conférences sur la motivation. Je ne suis pas encore finie. 13

In Safe Hands Airport security in Canada has changed significantly in the last decade with the application of more rigorous screening procedures. That doesn’t mean it has to be a more time-consuming or even an unpleasant experience. After all, you are in the hands of people who care. La sécurité des aéroports a bien changé ces dix dernières années. Ces procédures rigoureuses ne sont pas pour autant déplaisantes, car vous êtes entre les mains de professionnels.

When Porter Airlines unveiled their newly expanded fullservice terminal in Toronto earlier this year, it was the perfect opportunity to renew relationships with its partners and stakeholders, none more important to the security of passengers than the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA). A Canadian Crown corporation led by experts in aviation, security and intelligence, CATSA’s mandate since its inception in 2002 has been to standardize all passenger and baggage screening practices across Canada, expanding a program of effectiveness, efficiency and consistency. Paul Folkes is CATSA’s Central Region Operations Manager responsible for the screening security at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. It is his job to ensure security contracts are compliant, standard operation procedures are upheld and the training and recertification of security officers is maintained. Before moving to CATSA, Paul spent 26 years in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, nine of which were in National Security Investigation, and also worked as a security inspector with Transport Canada.

“Porter is doing a great job at marketing its product. We get a lot of high-profile business travellers and families through this airport – but our job is to ensure the security of all their passengers. We work to retain high standards of security and passenger relations and we want that process and experience to be exactly the same throughout the country, whether it be in St. John’s Newfoundland, Victoria or Iqaluit. The screening officers here do a great job.” Paul informs me that CATSA delivers its security screening through a thirdparty Screening Contractor Model. GARDA is the company under contract with CATSA to deliver these services at Toronto City Airport. Some screening officers are fluent in English and French to ensure passengers can be served in both official languages. All officers must pass numerous CATSA examinations and complete hours of on-site training to perfect their skills. Denise Borg has been a GARDA screening officer for over three years. She works at the forefront of passenger relations and is qualified to operate all the latest technical gadgetry, including the recently installed full-body scanner. During her career she has dealt with many passenger “situations,” all the while applying her training in conflict resolution and customer service, both of which CATSA consistently promotes. “Some passengers want to rush through the security zone, while others can get nervous or even angry if they have to surrender an item to us, but we give them lots of choices. Part of our job is to politely explain the process and rules to the passenger and maintain a calm and controlled situation. Often all it requires is using the correct tone of voice.” In response to the often conflicting information supplied by airlines from country to country as to what items are permissible in both checked luggage and carry-ons, CATSA has developed a series of highly informative print and online guides known as Pack Smart. These they hope will educate the Canadian public and international visitors and ultimately save everyone time and annoyance.

Une partie de notre travail consiste à expliquer poliment le processus et le règlement aux passagers et de maintenir le calme tout en gardant le contrôle de la situation. Une partie du travail est de savoir employer le ton adéquat. » Afin d’éviter les informations contradictoires fournies par les compagnies aériennes de divers pays, quant aux articles permis dans la soute et les bagages à main, l’ACSTA a mis au point une série de guides imprimés et en ligne connus sous le nom de J’y pense, en espérant qu’ils informeront le public canadien et international afin de faire gagner du temps à tous et d’éviter les désagréments.

For all the advances in security technology and clear, constructive advice offered to passengers, a few are still not dissuaded from trying to outwit screening officers. Thus these highly trained men and women must be constantly prepared for the unpredictable, able to adapt and quickly differentiate, for example, a water pistol in a bag that belongs to a family with young children from something more threatening, perhaps concealed within a seemingly harmless item. The Hold Baggage Screening (HBS) area is a section of the airport that passengers never see. Checked luggage is passed along a ceiling-mounted carousel at high speed through a series of advanced controlled checks. The system flags selected bags as suspicious and chooses others at random for further screening. These bags are then sent to an enclosed area housing a gleaming, barrel-shaped scanner. The advanced sensors are able to detect a full spectrum of explosives and trace chemical elements. Officers operating this advanced screening area access hundreds of flagged bags every day, as the CATSA operating procedures dictate that the specialized equipment must be constantly in service and not simply used for exceptional situations. “Certain materials are highlighted with certain colours,” explains senior officer Carol Lavin, drawing my attention to the scanned images on the computer screen. “Then I can focus on a specific area, or the whole bag.” The layers of ghostly images look confusing to the untrained eye, more like an artist’s sketch, lines crossing and shapes intermingling. Carol identifies a pair of shoes and a wash bag containing a razor and toothbrush, expertly reading the images as if they were a text in a foreign language. If this bag shows no signs of irregularity, it will be loaded on to a cart and taken to the designated aircraft within five to 10 minutes of the passenger’s checking in, upholding CATSA’s mandate of high level security going hand-in-hand with first-rate customer service. The only thing then that can slow down the entire process of security screening is we, the passengers, so as CATSA says, pack smart! That will leave us more time to experience Porter’s luxurious lounge. Why would we want to miss that?

Malgré tous les progrès technologiques et les conseils très clairs fournis aux passagers, certains essaient tout de même de mystifier les agents de contrôle. Aussi, ces hommes et ces femmes doivent toujours prévoir l’imprévisible et savoir faire la différence, par exemple, entre un pistolet à eau dans la valise d’une famille avec de jeunes enfants et quelque chose de plus dangereux dissimulé dans un article d’apparence anodine. La zone de contrôle des bagages enregistré (CBE) reste inconnue des passagers. Les bagages enregistrés passent à grande vitesse sur un tapis roulant suspendu pour subir une série de tests. Le système signale les sacs douteux et en choisit d’autres au hasard pour un examen plus poussé. Ces derniers sont alors envoyés dans un scanner dont les capteurs sont capables de détecter toute une gamme d’explosifs et d’éléments chimiques. Les agents chargés de cette zone de contrôle vérifient des centaines de valises par jour, car la procédure établie par l’ACSTA précise que ces équipements spécialisés doivent toujours être en service et non pas réservés à des cas exceptionnels. « Les matériaux apparaissent sous différentes couleurs », m’explique la responsable Carol Lavin en désignant les images qui défilent sur l’écran d’ordinateur. « Je porte mon attention sur un point précis ou sur l’ensemble du sac. » Les images multicouches semblent difficiles à interpréter aux yeux d’un novice ; on dirait un dessin d’artiste avec des lignes qui se fondent et se recoupent. Carol identifie des chaussures et une trousse de toilette qui contient un rasoir et une brosse à dents. Elle décrypte ces images un peu à la manière d’une langue étrangère. Si le sac ne comporte aucune irrégularité, il est chargé sur un chariot et acheminé vers l’avion qui l’attend dans les 10 minutes suivant l’enregistrement : ceci pour respecter la mission de haute sécurité de l’ACSTA tout en offrant un service de premier ordre. Le seul grain de sable du système de contrôle c’est nous, les passagers, alors comme dit l’ACSTA, J’y pense ! Cela nous donnera plus de temps pour profiter du salon Porter. Qui voudrait manquer cela ?

A key member of Porter’s customer relations team, Houston Edwards talks about the twin arts of listening and logistics in the buzzing Call Centre. I’m an agent in the Porter Call Centre, where I take care of customer relations, responding to the letters and emails that Porter passengers send in with their concerns, compliments or questions about Porter. I’ve been working here for about a year. We’ll provide booking information, we’ll arrange cancellations and changes to itineraries, and we’ll answer more general questions. We have 40 to 50 employees in the Call Centre in total, with about half that number working at any one time. We’re based at Porter HQ at Billy Bishop Airport – we’re part of the airport complex. I think it gives callers reassurance to know that we’re actually part of the whole Porter experience, we’re not outsourced – sometimes they’ll ask us how the weather is, or what’s happening with a particular flight, and we’ll be able to give them information based on what we see. We’re right on the spot.

Je m’occupe des relations à la clientèle en répondant aux courriels et aux lettres que les passagers de Porter nous envoient : réclamations, compliments ou questions sur Porter. Je travaille là depuis environ un an. Nous donnons des informations sur les réservations, nous faisons les annulations et les changements d’itinéraires, et nous répondons aux questions plus générales. Le Centre compte 40 ou 50 employés au total dont la moitié peut travailler en même temps. Nous sommes à l’aéroport Billy Bishop, au siège de Porter. Je crois que les clients sont rassurés de voir que nous faisons partie intégrante de l’expérience Porter, que nous ne sommes pas des sous-traitants anonymes. The most common query I get? Probably how to get to the airport. Not everyone is aware that you have to take the ferry across to the island. It’s a little bit different from other airport set-ups, so people are often phoning to check on their arrangements or that they haven’t made a mistake or something. I think it all helps to make the Porter travelling experience a unique one. I see part of my job description as putting people at their ease. I answer a lot of questions every day, so the most important thing for me is to stay positive, put myself in the passengers’ shoes, and give them the best service that I can, based on how I would personally like to be treated. Someone once gave me some advice: remember that you’re often the first point of contact for the potential Porter passenger. You only get one chance to make a first impression, and that impression will colour the caller’s perception of the company. So you have to treat the last question of the day as if it’s your first, even if it’s a question you’ve already answered a bunch of times. It’s like you begin afresh with each question. I’m from Montréal originally. When I moved to Toronto around two years ago, my girlfriend’s sister suggested I apply to Porter – she’d travelled with them and thought they were a great company. So I called them, and got called back, and here I am. It’s funny – I have no previous airline industry experience, though I’d always dreamed of becoming an airline pilot when I was a little boy. 22

C’est différent des autres aéroports, alors les gens appellent souvent pour vérifier leur itinéraire ou qu’ils n’ont pas commis d’erreur. Je suis convaincu que tout cela contribue à faire du voyage avec Porter une expérience unique. Je considère que mettre les gens à l’aise fait partie de mon travail. Chaque jour, je réponds à bien des questions et le plus important selon moi, c’est de rester positif, de me mettre à la place des passagers et de donner le meilleur service possible. Je les traite comme j’aimerais être traité. Un jour, quelqu’un m’a donné ce conseil : rappelez-vous que vous êtes le premier point de contact pour le passager potentiel de Porter. Vous n’avez qu’une seule chance de faire bonne impression, et celle-ci donnera une image de la compagnie au passager. Alors il faut toujours traiter la dernière question de votre journée comme si c’était la première, même si c’est une question à laquelle vous avez répondu des dizaines de fois. Il faut recommencer à neuf avec chaque question. Je viens de Montréal. Quand je me suis installé à Toronto il y a deux ans, la sœur de ma copine a suggéré que je tente ma chance à Porter. Elle avait pris l’avion avec Porter et pensait que c’était une bonne entreprise. J’ai donc contacté Porter et j’ai eu un poste. C’est amusant, parce que je n’avais aucune

Right now I’m doing 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., which I’ll do for three months, then we’ll have what’s called a shift bid, where you bid for the shift that you want, and are allocated that, or another shift, on the basis of seniority. People have an image of call centres – a sort of barn full of people in makeshift cubicles. I’ve worked in a couple like that, and Porter’s is very different. We really have a sense of family; it’s a really social environment and everyone gets on really well. There are activities arranged – potlucks, that kind of thing. Everyone gets involved. I’m really into sports; I play soccer and basketball. Maybe I should try to put together a Porter soccer team? I see myself staying in the airline industry now. I’ve learned so many things I never knew before; it’s opened my eyes to the way air travel really works, and the amazingly complex logistics involved in simply getting a flight out on time. You really appreciate it all when you see it from the inside. And we’re wellplaced at Porter to get that insider view, because it’s still a small boutiquey company. I love the flying experience; I go back and forth between Toronto and Montréal a lot to see my family. And while I’m not thinking of becoming a pilot anymore, I’d love to explore the customer relations side of the industry further. I’m still only 21, and I feel like I’m just beginning with Porter.

Je joue au football et au basket-ball. Je devrais monter une équipe de foot Porter. Je me vois bien rester dans ce secteur. J’ai appris tant de choses ; j’ai découvert comment fonctionnait le transport aérien, et l’incroyable complexité de la logistique nécessaire à un seul vol. Vu de l’intérieur, c’est quelque chose qu’on peut apprécier. Chez Porter, on a vraiment cette perspective parce que c’est une petite entreprise. J’adore voler ; je fais souvent le vol Toronto-Montréal pour voir ma famille. Et si je n’ai plus l’ambition de devenir pilote, je voudrais en apprendre davantage sur l’aspect relations avec la clientèle. Je n’ai que 21 ans, et je pense que ce n’est qu’un début avec Porter. 23

Out of Chicago, past Gary and east across Indiana, skyscrapers, steel and city slowly fall away and in their place, rolling farms, lush trees and a slower pace take over. Long a vacation destination for Chicagoans fleeing the hot and busy city in the summer, Harbor Country’s towns – Michiana, Grand Beach, New Buffalo, Union Pier, Three Oaks, Lakeside, Harbert and Sawyer – are becoming permanent residences to many Windy City transplants who found themselves stretching their stays until eventually making the move yearround. With new urban residents, new urban shops and eateries have popped up throughout a part of the country known mostly for farmland and dunes. The area has more than enough to offer for a weekend getaway. Morning should start early at local anchor Luisa’s Cafe and the 60-year-old Harbert Swedish Bakery. Luisa’s is the more recent addition to the long-standing bakery, and is the top stop for a breakfast and Intelligentsia coffee, free-range eggs and organic baked oatmeal. (NB: If you happen to arrive on Friday, an oven in the back turns out woodfired pizzas from noon to 8:30 p.m. – Fridays only.) Red Arrow Highway is dotted with antiques stores that have been there for ages, but among them a more curated, urbane version stands out. Just up the road from Luisa’s is Marco Polo, Brian Overly and Brian DeBaugh’s shop of 12 years. Antique copper calipers, 1860s astronomy prints, mid-century yellow chairs and a 19th-century baking trolley exemplify the European industrial and American cottage-style mix at this immaculately dressed store, where treasures from the past are made new again. Though Marco Polo stays open year-round, many places in the area still have seasonal, or weekend-only hours, and though many of the small cottages along the water have been replaced with large, year-round, insulated houses, a strong rain and wind storm can still seriously knock out power, paralyzing the small towns and closing roads with fallen trees and power lines. 02/03

Appréciées depuis longtemps par les Chicagoans en vacances qui fuient la métropole chaude et frénétique durant l’été, les villes de Harbor Country – Michiana, Grand Beach, New Buffalo, Union Pier, Three Oaks, Lakeside, Harbert et Sawyer – sont devenues les résidences permanentes de nombreux déracinés de Windy City qui, en allongeant de plus en plus la durée de leurs séjours, ont fini par y rester pour de bon. Avec ces nouveaux-venus, de nouvelles boutiques et restaurants urbains ont vu le jour dans un pays jusque-là réputé pour ses prairies et ses dunes. L’endroit a largement de quoi occuper une escapade de fin de semaine. On commencera le matin par un arrêt au Luisa’s Cafe et à la boulangerie Harbert Swedish ouverte depuis 60 ans. Luisa’s est récemment venue s’ajouter à la vénérable boulangerie et c’est une étape obligée pour le petit-déjeuner avec café Intelligentsia, œufs de ferme et céréales biologiques. (NB : si vous arrivez le vendredi, de 12 h à 20 h 30 on peut déguster des pizzas cuites au four à bois – seulement le vendredi). Le Red Arrow Highway est parsemé de boutiques d’antiquités qui sont là depuis des lunes, mais l’une d’elles, faisant preuve de discernement, plus urbaine, sort du lot. Non loin de chez Luisa’s, vous trouverez Marco Polo, la boutique tenue depuis 12 ans par Brian Overly et Brian DeBaugh. Pieds à coulisse en cuivre, cartes astronomiques de 1860, chaises jaunes du milieu du XXe et un chariot de boulanger du XIXe siècle sont parmi les objets qui représentent l’Europe industrielle et les cottages américains dans ce magasin bien agencé, où l’on redonne une jeunesse aux trésors du passé. Si Marco Polo est ouvert toute l’année, de nombreuses échoppes ne le sont qu’en haute saison ou les fins de semaine. Bien des petits cottages du littoral ont fait place à des maisons plus

Rabbit Run Inn is the place to be during such a storm, with a backup generator – a rarity in these parts – to keep things running. No surprise, as innkeepers Linda Jo and Rodney Clough have thought of nearly everything to make your stay at their idyllic four-room inn as comfortable, private and relaxing as possible. You’ll find orange juice and cream for coffee in your mini fridge for the next morning, ground coffee and espresso for the dual espresso/coffee machine by your mini bar, and baked goods delivered silently to your doorstep by 8 a.m. A deck out back looks onto a lily-padded koi pond and croaking bullfrogs. Linda Jo, an interior designer in her previous life, has put a well-edited, modern touch on everything, from super-soft sheets to rolled beach towels in the closets. Upon checking in, you’ll be given the couple’s favorite picks for dining and activities in the area, with helpful maps accompanying. Go by foot, and follow the Cloughs’ hand-drawn map and directions to walk north less than a mile to Warren Dunes State Park. Six miles of hiking trails weave throughout the park, which is dense with oak, maple, ash, and cottonwood trees, and filled with picnic tables and campsites. Hike to the peak of the dunes where the landscape opens for striking views a couple of hundred feet above the lake, or wander down to the expansive three-mile stretch of shoreline. Refuel at Soe Café, a lunch and dinner locale in Sawyer just south of Rabbit Run Inn, with an impressive menu that pays homage to the rich agriculture of the area, using local farm produce, wines from nearby wineries Hickory Creek and Wyncroft, and brewed-in-Michigan beers. 28

From Soe, driving directly south on 3 Oaks Road, the afternoon calls for a relaxed stroll through Three Oaks, the only inland Harbor Country town. Impossibly charming, with century-old buildings and a train that passes through its heart, it is from another era. The old train depot, just east of the main drag of town, houses J.L. Powell, a menswear shop inspired by the sporting and gaming life: coyote throws, ostrich belts, Shetland wool sweaters, leather dog collars, and shirts and slacks in linens, washed twills and seersuckers. The shop’s decor – nautical maps, quail feathers, and hunting dogs – pair perfectly with the depot, with its pressed tin walls and ceilings and Teddy Roosevelt-era appointments. In town along Elm Street is Drier’s Meat Market, offering smoked meats, cheeses and an aesthetic so striking “you kind of can’t believe it’s real,” according to a regular visitor. Just up the street is the café and deli Froehlich’s, where you’ll find a gorgeous array of their own preserves, pickles and pasta sauces crafted from organic tomatoes and other natural goodies grown in Three Oaks, as well as big Ball mason jars filled with housemade lemonade, and enormous rosemary flatbreads. The Vickers Theatre is a turn-of-the-century art film house, restored to its original splendour. If you don’t stop in for a film, stick your head in to ogle the beautiful architectural details. On the way out of town, you’ll see antique store Ipso Facto, which hawks large architectural artifacts, as well as interesting objects from the past century and Americana folk art. As the day comes to a close in Harbor Country, the sunset over the lake tends to be the main attraction, but for a dinner and show in one, Fitzgerald’s in Sawyer is the place. The painted white building, with an outdoor patio covered in hanging lanterns and a menu of craft beers and comfort food (house-smoked pulled pork sandwiches, fish and chips, mac ’n cheese) transforms on the weekend nights to a spirited party of live music and dance, and tends to be the destination for area residents and visitors alike.

Ce dernier, riche en chênes, érables, frênes et peupliers, offre dix kilomètres de sentiers et de nombreux campings et tables de pique-nique. Montez au sommet de la dune et vous aurez un panorama sublime sur le lac, ou descendez pour suivre la côte pendant cinq kilomètres. Faites le plein à Soe Café (dîner et souper) à Sawyer, un peu au sud de Rabbit Run Inn, qui propose un menu impressionnant rendant hommage à l’agriculture de la région : produits des fermes locales et vin provenant des domaines d’Hickory Creek et Wincroft, et bières du Michigan. Depuis Soe, piquez au sud via 3 Oaks Road pour une balade relaxante à travers Three Oaks, la seule ville de Harbor Country qui n’est pas sur la côte. Avec ses maisons centenaires et un train qui serpente en plein milieu, elle semble d’une autre époque. L’ancien dépôt ferroviaire, à l’est de la rue principale, abrite désormais J.L. Powell, une boutique de vêtements pour homme inspirée par le sport et la chasse avec ses couvertures en peau de coyote, ceintures en cuir d’autruche, chandails en laine Shetland, colliers de chien en cuir, chemises et pantalons en toile, sergés délavés et autres étoffes cloquées. La déco des lieux avec ses cartes marines, ses plumes de cailles et ses chiens de chasse, s’accorde bien avec le dépôt aux murs et aux plafonds recouverts de feuilles d’étain de l’époque de Teddy Roosevelt. Sur Elm Street, on trouve Drier’s Meat Market qui propose des viandes fumées, des fromages et une esthétique si frappante que certains clients se disent : « Ça ne peut pas être vrai. » Un peu plus loin, le café-déli Froehlich’s vous attend avec une délicieuse sélection de conserves et de pickles maison, de sauces tomate biologiques et d’autres produits naturels provenant de Three Oaks, ainsi que des

bocaux géants Ball recelant limonade maison et d’énormes miches de pain au romarin. Quant aux Vickers Theatre, il s’agit d’un cinéma du début du XXe restauré. Si le film ne vous tente pas, jetez tout de même un œil à l’architecture superbe. En quittant la ville, on tombe sur l’antiquaire Ipso Facto qui vend des objets d’architecture et autres reliques du siècle dernier, ainsi que de l’art folk Americana. À Harbor Country, lorsque la journée tire à sa fin, l’attraction principale est le coucher de soleil sur le lac. Mais pour un souper-spectacle, il faut aller chez Fitzgerald’s à Sawyer. Though not one of the Harbor Country towns, Buchanan, which stretches straight east from New Buffalo about 30 km, is developing a small fan base who make the 30 minute drive through farm country to see its growing crop of stores and eat at the best restaurant in town, Wheatberry Restaurant and Tavern. Driving east along Warren Woods Road toward Buchanan, you’ll pass farm after farm, witnessing one of the most agriculturally diverse lands in the country. The fields change from corn to wheat to soybeans to blueberries to vineyards to apple trees, for a total of more than 50 different crops. Farm market stands along the side of the road and U-Pick farms are everywhere; make a stop to gather apples as you make your way east. Warren Woods Road drops into Front Street, which cuts through Buchanan. A one-time mill city, the town was nearly entirely abandoned until this most recent revival. Chicago-based antiques stores like Alan Robandt and Thomas Jolly Home and Garden have opened up outposts. Modern and brightly hued home décor shop Front adds to the mix, making the trip well worth it for a well-rounded shopping excursion. Just out of the centre of town, Wheatberry Restaurant and Tavern sits along the picturesque St. Joseph River and offers locally sourced ingredients, fresh-caught fish and slow-smoked, award-winning ribs. If you’ve filled up on barbecue at Wheatberry, walk it off through the trails of Fernwood Botanical Garden and Nature Preserve, just north up Range Line Road in Niles. Since 1964, the preserve has been a destination to learn about horticulture and botany through the various gardens, including the Japanese, Boxwood, Herb and Sensory, and Fern gardens. Fernwood boasts more than 40 acres of ornamental trees and shrubs, all accessible via the marked trails that wind throughout the area. A fiveacre Tallgrass Prairie shows off towering grasses and wildflowers, an idyllic autumn destination.

Polaroid cameras looked like they’d gone the same way, swept into obsolescence by the digital revolution, but a Netherlands-based company called The Impossible Project has thrilled diehards by developing (ho ho) a new type of film that works with old Polaroids, and it’s now opened a standalone store on Broadway for Polaroid partisans, selling the film and cameras and showcasing exhibitions devoted to the art of the instant snap.
