Message from the Artistic Director / Mot du directeur artistique The Handmaid’s Tale’s choreographer, Lila York, has adapted the prophetic spirit and human story of Margaret Atwood’s novel by the same name, to create a powerful and poignant interpretation of the gripping tale. This ambitious work brings one of Canada’s most celebrated literary achievements to the stage. Through conversation with Governor General Award-winning author, Margaret Atwood, York spent nearly a decade reimagining the dystopian world of Gilead to enthrall a ballet audience. The result, as you will see this evening, is a Gilead previously seen only in the mind’s eye: set in motion through the impassioned, athletic artists of Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet. We are thrilled to be bringing this work to the National Arts Centre. Please sit back and be transported into the dystopian world of Gilead. We hope you enjoy the performance.

The Handmaid’s Tale is a ballet interpretation of Margaret Atwood’s prophetic novel portraying a future society where human rights - and women’s rights in particular - have been nullified. Following a staged terrorist attack that sees the deaths of nearly all elected officials in Washington, the United States is subject to a coup by a fundamentalist religious faction of the military. They replace the liberal democratic infrastructure of the U.S. with a theocratic dictatorship named The Republic of Gilead who institutes a rigid social hierarchy. Owing to radiation poisoning and subsequent low fertility, women of child-bearing age who have committed any infraction of the new laws can be enslaved to the families of the upper echelon as surrogate mothers, or Handmaids. They are sent to an indoctrination center, known informally as the Red Center for the red habits the Handmaids are compelled to wear. Here they are instructed by Aunts, the only women in Gilead who are permitted the right to read, then sent on to the homes of Commanders. Each Handmaid has three chances to produce

In Gilead abortion is outlawed and any physician found to have performed one is hanged. As in George Orwell’s 1984, Gilead is perpetually at war, the press consists of controlled propaganda, and the young are indoctrinated into compliance. And as in all repressive societies, there is a resistance movement in Gilead, called May Day, named for the day of the planned overthrow of the regime. This is the story of one Handmaid, known as Offred – literally “of Fred”- for the military commander she is assigned to; her best friend, the indomitable Moira, a woman both fearless and reckless and embodying a clear counterpoint to the cautious Offred; the Commander and his wife, Serena Joy, a well-known gospel singer in “the time before” whose career was terminated after the coup; and their chauffeur, Nick, who may or may not be a member of the Resistance. Welcome to Gilead. Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, published in 1985, has sold over ten million copies, has been translated into many languages, and has not been out of print since its initial publication.

Founded in 1939, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet holds the distinction of being the first and only ballet company in North America to hold the “Royal” designation and is also one of the oldest ballet companies on the continent. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet first began to tour Canada in 1945; it completed its first American tour in 1954. Biographies André Lewis

André Lewis

André Lewis has spent the majority of his career with Canada’s first professional dance company, accepting the position of artistic director in 1996. Since then he has been the driving force behind the new and innovative works that have dramatically rejuvenated the Company’s repertoire. A native of Gatineau, Québec, Lewis began his dance training in Ottawa before being accepted into the Professional Division of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School in 1975. He joined the RWB Company in 1979 where he enjoyed an accomplished career as a dancer for over ten years. Lewis has commissioned numerous blockbuster ballets such as Mark Godden’s Dracula in 1998 and Moulin Rouge® - The Ballet in 2009. He was instrumental in the 1999 creation of a new Nutcracker for the Company and in 2002, Lewis brought to Winnipeg the thrilling and passionate Carmina Burana by Argentinean choreographer Mauricio Wainrot. In 2012, Lewis and Atlanta Ballet artistic director John McFall co-commissioned a new creation by celebrated choreographer Twyla Tharp titled Twyla Tharp’s The Princess & The Goblin. In 2013, Lewis commissioned another outstanding new creation in conjunction with New York choreographer Lila York. The fulllength ballet The Handmaid’s Tale is a bold adaptation of the novel of the same name by Governor General Award-winning Canadian author, Margaret Atwood. In addition to his position as artistic director, Lewis is a sought-after ballet instructor and has guest taught throughout Europe and Japan.

André Lewis a passé la majorité de sa carrière au sein de la première compagnie de danse professionnelle du Canada, dont il est devenu le directeur artistique en 1996. On lui doit en grande partie la création du nouveau spectacle Casse-Noisette présenté pour la première fois par la compagnie en 1999. En 2002, M. Since 1990 she has choreographed works for Birmingham Royal Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Boston Ballet, Norwegian National Ballet, Houston Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Scottish Ballet, Washington Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Tulsa Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Ballet West, Colorado Ballet, Louisville Ballet, Ballet Memphis, Kansas City Ballet, Dayton Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Orlando Ballet, American Repertory Ballet, Connecticut Ballet Theatre, The David Parsons Company, The Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble, The Juilliard Dance Ensemble, and The Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Music Director and Conductor Tadeusz Biernacki was born in Czestochowa, Poland where he began his music education at the early age of four. He won the Karol Szymanowski competition in Warsaw in 1976 and earned his Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the Conservatory of Music in Katowice in 1978. He has performed as a soloist in many European countries. Biernacki settled in Canada in 1978 and continued his studies with Professor Marek Jablonski at the University of Manitoba and Banff School of Fine Arts. As a winner of the 1980 Young Artist’s Competition, Biernacki has toured Canada extensively in solo and chamber music recitals. In 1983 he began his association with the Manitoba Opera and in 1988 with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. He made his conducting debut with Winnipeg Symphony

Charlies Kreuzfahrt, a full-length ballet commissioned for Stadtische Theater Chemnitz in Germany, received its world premiere in 2005. Feeling equally at home with choral music, Biernacki has been Music Director of Sokol Polish Folk Ensemble since 1980. In addition to his position with the RWB, Biernacki is Music Director and Conductor of Saskatoon Opera, as well as Assistant Music Director, Assistant Conductor and Chorus Master of Manitoba Opera.

Clifton Taylor has created lighting, projection and scenic designs for theatre, dance and opera companies around the world. He has numerous Broadway credits and his designs for dance have been commissioned for the repertories of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, the Rambert Dance Company (London), American Ballet Theatre (NY), and the San Francisco Ballet among many others. He is currently the resident designer for Karole Armitage Gone!, Philadanco, and Elisa Monte Dance and has designed for other renowned companies. Taylor has done extensive work in both new and repertory opera and his designs have been featured at the world’s major arts festivals including the Venice Bienalle, Vienna Festival, New Crowned Hope, Jacob’s Pillow, Singapore’s Festival of Asian Arts, Arts Summit/Jakarta, the Hong Kong Festival, the Istanbul Festival, the Hamburg Summer Festival, The Lincoln Center Festival and BAM/Next Wave. In addition, Taylor has worked as a theatre consultant on new large scale theatrical venues in several countries and is a sought after teacher and lecturer on theatrical lighting especially in the area of colour. In 2002 he was awarded a grant from the Asian Cultural Council to develop and teach a course in design for the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Taylor was educated at the Tisch School within New York University and resides in New York City with his family.

Trained at the Washington School of Ballet and the Ballet Nacional de Cuba before joining The Washington Ballet for several seasons. She has been a member of the Seán Curran Company since 2006, and its Associate Artistic Director since 2009. Elizabeth has been creating work and performing with Ana Isabel Keilson since 2008. Elizabeth graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University with a degree in psychology and dance and earned an MA from Teachers College of Columbia University in the field of Motor Learning and Control. She is currently a doctoral student at Teachers College, researching uses of motor imagery by dancers. Elizabeth has taught and set choreography in university dance departments and dance companies across the country. She has assistant choreographed for and appeared with Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Opera de Montreal, San Diego Opera and Yale Repertory Theater.
