The Essential MICHAEL JACKSON

2 520422

In pop music it's not uncommon for an artist to burst on the scene with a dynamic record, be hailed as some sort of genius and then, just a few years later, be tossed on the scrap heap of history. Before you know it “the genius” is a trivia question. America can burn through pop stars like a match does kindling.

CD 1 1. I Want You Back (The Jackson 5) Freddie Perren - Berry Gordy Jr. - Deke Richards - Alphonso Mizell

Recorded 1969 • Motown single M1157 • Produced by The Corporation™ • Arranged by The Corporation™ Courtesy of Motown Records, under license from Universal Music Enterprises

2. ABC (The Jackson 5) Freddie Perren - Berry Gordy Jr. - Deke Richards - Alphonso Mizell

The only reasonable standard for judging a career then, is not hits collected over a short period of time, but by the body of work constructed over time in the face of changing taste and generations. Enduring greatness is manifest not over two years or even five, but spans a decade or two. It embraces an artist’s maturation and evolution. It becomes a document of a life in search of excellence and self-expression. Michael Jackson’s artistic life is testament to the power of what Quincy Jones calls “ass power” aka combining focus and talent in service to an idea of sonic perfection. From even before his spectacular pre-pubescent performances with the Jackson Five, through his teen years with the Jacksons to his historic adult solo work, Jackson has embodied the idea of a creator who’s made his mark by producing a long, deep catalogue of quality music. Using “essential” when you talk about the output of a performer of his caliber is rather confining, since Jackson’s strength derives from the song by song vibrancy of his albums, not simply from the long list of hits to his credit. But if you wanna strip mine Jackson’s work to a handful of gems, this collection, which spans his career from a kiddie star in Gary, Indiana to international superstar, certainly works. Of course you could argue that any record in the body of work of one of America’s definitive singers is essential. Nelson George
