STEMAEL IV: RESURRECTING A S PARKMAN & STEPHENS

STEAMEL IV is a 1964 Sparkman & Stephens classic wooden yacht built for ocean races and cruises. She embodies the highest degrees of seaworthiness, speed, habitability and beauty, to the extent that famous sailors as Eric Tabarly have sailed her. She also made herself famous in the 60s and 70s by winning several races as the Giraglia in 1973. Sparkman & Stephens designs won most of the major international yacht races such as the America's Cup, for several decades, including a string of victories in the Fastnet and Sydney to Hobart races. They are highly regarded not just for their speed but for their elegance, seaworthiness and suitability for cruising. Although one of the most beautiful yachts of the south coast of France, STEMAEL IV was forgotten in the Marseille harbor for a number of years, making her unable to sail and waste her distinctive appearance. Since February 2006, STEMAEL IV is being carefully restored according to the original plans acquired from the architect, respecting techniques and materials used at the time. The restoration is done in cooperation with a famous French shipyard located in La Rochelle – France.

T HE PROJECTS STEMAEL IV was granted a French National Heritage award, and classified as classic yacht by the Maritime Museum of La Rochelle, where she is also anchored. These two prestigious distinctions ensure the medias’ attention as well as the interest of yacht clubs and harbors around the world in hosting STEMAEL IV. Beside the fame of the yacht itself and the professionalism of the team members, it is the dimension of the journey and its content that will ensure the highest and most original degree of visibility for every partner willing to join the project.
