Production-level vs. Internal tracks mode

The Timeline view can be used to view your entire production or individual items within a production, using production-level or internal tracks modes:

28

Working with the Timeline view Getting to know the Timeline view

Production-level mode (default). By default, the Timeline view displays

all items that affect the entire production (rather than items that have been added to individual items, such as audio files or enhancements added to a photo).

Internal tracks. When you double-click an individual item in the Video

track (such as a photo or video clip), the Timeline changes its display and shows only the items (such as audio or enhancements) that are attached to that individual item. These items will not display in the Timeline’s default production-level mode.

Timeline tracks A production is made up of different tracks. For example, the Video track displays any photos, video clips, or color panels you have added, while the Narration track displays any narration you have recorded. StoryBoard User’s Guide www.roxio.com

Video track. The Video track contains all items such as photos, video

clips, and color panels. Note The production is based on the Video track. You cannot position items in other tracks before the Video track begins or after it ends. ■

Native Audio. The Native Audio track contains any audio that is part of

a video clip that you have added to the Video track. ■

Background Audio. The Background Audio track contains any audio

added to the production or internal tracks as background audio. ■

Narration. The Narration track contains any narration you have

recorded into your production or internal tracks. ■

Sound Effects. The Sound Effects track contains any audio files you

have added to your production or internal tracks as sound effects. ■

Effect. The Effect track contains any video effects you have added to

your production or internal tracks. ■

Text. The Text track contains any text you have added to your

production or internal tracks. ■

Overlay. The Overlay track contains any overlay effects, photos, or

video clips you have added as overlays to your production or internal tracks. This track is a video mixing track. Note The Timeline view gives you an advantage over the Storyline view in that you can assemble more than one item in each of the Background Audio, Native Audio, Narration, Sound Effects, Overlay, Video Effect, or Text Effect tracks. You can also stack items on top of each other by adding them to different tracks. For more information, see Assembling and layering in the Timeline view on page 46.

Assembling and layering in the Timeline view The Timeline view lets you edit in two ways that offer an advantage over the Storyline view: ■

You can assemble more than one item within the same track for an individual item or an entire production

You can layer items on top of each other in different tracks to see how they overlap at specific positions in time

StoryBoard User’s Guide www.roxio.com

46

Editing basics Assembling and layering in the Timeline view

Example of assembling This example shows how you can effectively use the Timeline view to assemble more than one item within the same track in the production-level or internal tracks-level modes of the Timeline view. (For more information, see Production-level vs. Internal tracks mode on page 28.)

In the Timeline view, two overlays are assembled together within the production-level Overlay track. You can add as many items to each track as will fit into the production. This also works for internal-tracks mode.

The Storyline view lets you add only one overlay each to a production or individual item

StoryBoard User’s Guide www.roxio.com

47

Editing basics Creating motion within photos or video clips

While this example uses overlays, you can also assemble audio clips, video effects, and text effects inside their respective tracks.

Example of layering The following example shows how you can effectively use the Timeline view to layer items. At any one position in the timescale of the Timeline view, you can see exactly where each individual item in the Video track, Background Audio track, Video Effect track, and Overlay track overlap each other.

Creating motion within photos or video clips The Motion Pictures Editor lets you create the illusion of physical camera motion across a photo or video clip by defining a frame and following a path along key points that you set. You can also enlarge or reduce the size of the frames at each key point, to create the illusion of zooming in or out during this motion. For example, you could use the Motion Pictures Editor to make a documentary-style effect where the shot begins with a close-up on a photo, then slowly moves outward to the left until the entire photo is revealed.

StoryBoard User’s Guide www.roxio.com

48

Editing basics Creating motion within photos or video clips

Using the Motion Pictures Editor involves these steps:

1

Open the Motion Pictures Editor.

2

Establish the first key point. Define the starting point of the motion

path, known as the first key point. 3

Establish any other points. Establish the other key points on the motion

path of the “camera.” 4

5

Preview. Preview the motion effect you have just created.

6

Close. Once you are finished, accept or reject your changes.

Opening the Motion Pictures Editor To open the Motion Pictures Editor: ■

In the Production Editor, right-click the photo or video clip, and choose Edit > Motion Pictures. The Motion Pictures Editor appears.

Setting the first key point in the Motion Pictures Editor Each key point you set establishes a frame that defines the visible area that the user sees at that moment. To create a motion path with key points:

1

In the Motion Pictures Editor, make sure the Edit option is selected.

2

Drag the Size slider left to decrease the size of the bounding box in the Preview window. Drag this slider to the left to shrink the bounding box, or right to enlarge it

Detecting and defining scenes in a video clip You can manually or automatically detect and define new scenes within a larger video clip. Each new scene will create a new sub-video clip that exists only in the collection as part of the larger video clip. This feature is useful for reducing the amount of time it takes you to cut a lengthy piece of video into smaller video clips. Note This feature is available only in the Collections view.

To detect scenes automatically:

1

In the Media Selector Collections view, right-click the video clip, and choose Scene Detect. The Scene Detect dialog appears, displaying the video clip in a preview window. StoryBoard User’s Guide www.roxio.com

2

Select the Automatic option.

3

Under Detection Sensitivity, you can use the slider to increase or decrease the auto-detect sensitivity. Auto-detect creates sub-video clips from larger video clips by detecting changes in the color and brightness in the video, which may indicate a scene change. Increase the sensitivity to create video clips when less change is detected, or decrease the sensitivity to create video clips only when significant changes are detected.

4

When you are ready, click Start Detection. The video clip plays back in fast motion on the preview screen. Each time StoryBoard encounters and defines a new scene, it adds a thumbnail of the first frame of that scene to the list below. (To stop at any time, click Stop Detection.)

5

When scene detection is complete, you have these options before saving your changes: ■

To delete any of the defined scenes, select the thumbnail of the scene and then click Delete Scene. (This will not delete any part of the larger video clip—it will only delete the definition of the scene.)

Adding and editing audio effects What is an audio effect?

What is an audio effect? An audio effect is an audio clip that you can add to your production. The audio can be music, a sound effect, or a voice-over narration. You can edit audio clips to loop them, adjust the volume, layer audio effects to overlap each other, and more. Note Some of your video clips may already have audio. This audio portion is known as a native audio track and cannot be separated from the video. You can, however, use the Audio Editor to control the volume or mute the native audio track.

Viewing the audio tracks When you are working with audio clips in the Production Editor Timeline view, you can select the audio tracks that are displayed. To display audio tracks:

1

In the Timeline view, click the Show/Hide Tracks icon. The Show/Hide Tracks dialog appears.

2

Select the check boxes for the tracks you want to view, and click OK. The following table shows the audio icons as they appear in the Timeline view.

Positioning audio clips You can reposition audio clips on a track, layer audio clips on different audio tracks, or overlap audio clips to add complex audio dimensions to your production.

Audio clip 1 Audio clip 2 Audio clip 3

Note You cannot move an audio clip from one track to another. If you want to change the track the audio clip is on you must cut it from its current position, and then add it to the other track. (To do this, right-click the audio clip and choose Cut, then right-click the track where you want to paste it and choose Paste.) To change the position of an audio clip on an audio track:

1

In the Timeline view, click the audio clip that you want to reposition, and then drag it left or right along the timescale to an empty position. Note If the position where you want to move the audio clip is already occupied, you can move or shorten the audio clip on that position to create a gap into which you can move the audio clip you want to relocate. Your audio clip is moved to the new position. StoryBoard User’s Guide www.roxio.com

To overlap or layer audio clips:

1

In the Timeline view, make sure that the audio clips you want to overlap are on different audio tracks.

2

Click the audio clip that you want to have overlap another, and then drag it left or right on the timescale to an empty position in the track so that it overlaps the second audio clip position on another audio track. Your audio clips overlap, and you will be able to hear both at the same time for the duration of the overlap. Note If the position you where you want to move the audio clip is already occupied, you can move or shorten the audio clip on that position to create a gap into which you can move the audio clip you want to relocate.

3

Repeat step 3 to overlap audio clips on other tracks.

Using the Audio Editor The Audio Editor lets you change properties of the audio, such as adjust the volume of the audio clip, change the duration of the audio clip, set audio loops, use preset equalizer settings, and create and save your own equalizer settings. You can edit audio that is attached to an individual item or spanning the entire production. You can open the Audio Editor in any of these ways: ■

From the Storyline view, right-click an individual item or the Production Editor Background (whichever contains the audio you want to edit), and choose Edit > Background Audio.

Choose one of these options from the Methods drop-down list: ■

Shaped Masks: Use this method to create overlay masks. For

example, you can use to create a picture-in-picture effect from a video clip of a head-shot of a person with a background, you can use the Shaped Mask method with the zoom and positioning controls to place the head-shot in the location of your choice on the image. ■

Chroma Key : Use this method to customize your overlay based on

color. For example: if you can create a picture-in-picture effect from a video clip of a head-shot of a person with a blue background, you can use the Chroma key method eyedropper to select and remove the blue background so that only the person’s head remains. You can then use the zoom and positioning controls to place the subject at the bottom edge in the foreground. To get the best result, when you are shooting the video of the head-shot, it is best to have the subject approximately 6 feet (2 meters) from an evenly lit blue background. You could then use Photosuite to create a picture frame, and then fill in the inside of the frame with a solid color (that is not used in the frame), and then use the Chroma Key method to remove the interior of the frame. ■

Luma Key : Use this method to customize your overlay based on

luminosity—the lightness and darkness of a color. For example, you could use this option to remove the light areas or the dark areas in an item. ■

Embedded transparency : Use this method with video clips and

photos that have an embedded alpha channel – a channel used to create and store mask information that is used to protect or effect specific parts of an image. This the most effective way to create a transparency. The settings available for the method you have selected appear. These settings vary depending on the method chosen.
