In 1999 Nice have been entrusted for the first time to organize the World Sambo Cup. Master Josh Henson, Federation Internationale Amateur Sambo President (FIAS located in the USA) and member of the American Olympic National Committee, led for a period of three consecutive years this demonstration, organised by the Nice University Club, and gave again his confidence, so that Nice could be a central element of the world-wide Sambo. In fact, the work realized by the organizers has allowed to stabilize the event, that becomes equal to other championships in the world, and this for an indeterminate period. This World Sambo Cup

has allowed to feed again project to spread on peripherial countries, as Mediterranean Sombo Cup, and the creation this year of one European Sombo Federation. At the time of 2000 edition, Master Josh Henson has solicited the organizers to set up an European federation of Sombo and to turn it operational. Thus, Christian Joly, co-president of the Nice University Club became president of this structure,. The other project that comes to feed the World Cup is the Mediterranean Sombo Cup, that will know this year its third edition. This event, created by Christian Joly, has allowed the FIAS to develop its Universitary politics, and created in January 2001 a universitary commission, of which

Christian Joly and Hervé Chastagnier, Jean-Marc Liger and Théodore Aslamatzidis are members. The 2001 edition, will see the organisation of the World Sambo Cup and the Mediterranean Sombo Cup, to which ones an international training will take place some days before, open notably to the students.

Previous Editions The first international competition of Sambo itself took place in 1973 at Teheran, Iran under the FILA, which recognized in 1966 Sambo as third wrestling style, side by sides of the two others olympic styles. After some years of interruption, World Sambo Cups are launched again, in a first time under FILA, then from 1985 under FIAS, presided then by Fernando Compte. Since 1999, the World Cup returns in France. Taking the advantage offered by this international demonstration, the organizers have then inserted in opening of the World Sambo Cup, a Mediterranean Sombo Cup. The work provided by the organizers and the FIAS, has allowed to put this Mediterranean Sombo Cup to the row of international demonstrations. Ratified as such by the Federation International Amateur Sambo, it has been registered to its international calendar. 1999 Edition Present since many years on the azurean territory, the sport sambo reappears through an international competition. This new millennium will see Nice to welcome again this world-wide competition. 1999 edition of the World Cup took place in the extension of international Wrestling Tournament Deglane. 2001 Edition The 2001 edition will see again national fight participants for the World Cup, and the universitary teams participating to the Mediterranean Universitary Cup. As last year, we will take advantage of international delegations coming to organize a training clinic, with free access, in connexion with the Faculty of Sports. Last year, the Bulgarians themselves had animated a part of the training to the side of the French. This year, the Bulgarian and French would have a new time to do this again for the students. Although the World Sambo Cup has a great importance, the Mediterranean Universitary Cup has a big interest too, and has allowed for example to give a new political axis to the FIAS, that created in January 2001 an universitary commission , of which Christian Joly, Hervé Chastagnier, Jean Marc Liger and Théodore Aslamatzidis are members .
