Sing my Ghosts working title

solo project by Jean-Baptiste Veyret-Logerias

"The Book of Imaginary Beings is to be read as with all miscellanies...not...straight through... Rather we would like the reader to dip into the pages at random, just as one plays with the shifting patterns of a kaleidoscope."! Jorge Luis Borges & Margarita Guerrero, preface to The Book of Imaginary Beings

This solo project aims to use voice and movement as spaces for convocation. Singing and dancing become the fields of archaic memories and the raw material to make appear imaginary creatures, monsters that inhabit my body. The choice of musics is not made already, but still I feel that this solo runs around songs like My only child by Nico, Erlkönig by F. Schubert, The thrill is gone by C. Baker, The seven deadly sins by K. Weill, or instrumental musics such as Kleines Requiem für eine Polka by H. Górecki. The imaginary of Sing my Ghosts deals with the strange and the disoriented that underlie the construction of David Lynch's movies, and with the suspended time in Roy Andersson's ones. If elements of narration appear, it is never to achieve a real narration, but rather to give impulses and signs that are constantly disrupting what has been set before : I want with this solo to dive into a dream-like world and let the body tell the state(s) of these monsters. The floating movement will allow the arising of these creatures. The stage thus becomes an obscure abyss of memories, of undefinable sensations. A true-false deriving self-portrait. Thus sing my ghosts.

Jean-Baptiste has been practicing singing since he was 10 years old, as well as choir leading for many years. In 2003 he was part of the vocal ensemble conducted by Pierre Calmelet which won the silver medal at the national competition of the Florilège Vocal de Tours International Choral Competition (FR). He started dancing when studying linguistics at the university of Tours (FR) in 2000. In 2005 he became one of the first students of the new ‘Essais’ programme at the CNDC in Angers (FR) / artistic director Emmanuelle Huynh, where he was invited to develop his own ideas on movement and staging. In that frame he was an interpreter in many projects, such as My Country Music by Deborah Hay, of which he made a solo adaptation : acclimatation. He also started developing his own research and made amongst others chambre son, a choreographic and vocal piece for an a capella choir. After finishing his formation in Angers in 2006, he kept developing his work. He made a performance on breathing with vacuum cleaners, inspiratoire/aspiratoire, and kept searching on choirs in movement with a choir of dancers-breathers, breathing choir, in Porto (PT), and a choir of children dancers-singers, Singing with Nicaoax, in Oaxaca (MX) in the framework of the international forum "Prisma". Moreover he was part of collective works, such as Tout Court, on invitation by Tommy Noonan at Stadttheater in Freiburg (DE), and Five people at Campo in Ghent (BE) on invitation by Dirk Pauwels. He has also collaborated and been an interpreter in other performance makers' projects : Daniel Larrieu (FR), António Pedro Lopes (PT), Guilherme Garrido (PT), Roser Montlló Guberna and Brigitte Seth (FR / ES), Begüm Erciyas (TR / BE), Tim Darbyshire (AU)... He has collaborated with film makers such as Alain Escalle and Jonathan Desoindre (FR), and with visual artists like Lizzie Scott (US) and Frédéric Moser & Philippe Schwinger (CH / DE) for their first exhibition in Paris. Since 2007 he has been an active member of the network Sweet & Tender collaborations. In 2010 he was awarded the danceWEB scholarship to attend the ImPulsTanz festival in Vienna (AT).
