WHAT IS SCIFEST ? Promoting a culture of science in South Africa, in a festive way Sasol SciFest, or the National Festival of Science, Engineering and Technology as it is formally titled, was launched in 1997 as a high-profile event to: •break through popular misconceptions and create a new mindsetabout science, engineering and technology; •allow scientists the opportunity to make science accessible to and within the reach of ordinary people; •show that science, engineering and technology underpin our business and every-day activities. The first of its kind in Southern Africa, Sasol SciFest which is held annually in late-March in Grahamstown offers a spectrum of no less than 400 events and activities including lectures, workshops, demonstrations, exhibitions, excursions, science olympics, a film-fest and street parade in just seven days. Sasol SciFest has something for all from 5 to 105 years of age, and attendance now exceeds 40 000 visitors annually.

Also called weather balloon, the purpose is to design and manufacture a scientific basket and its content with a group of youth.

Well developped in France, such a programme aims : •To make youth develop a project with constraints •To organize a long term project •To make youth work together on the same topic.
