Review of the hurricane "HC92" generated by ZEROTherm...

Presentation, bundle :

The packaging displays the Hurricane HC92 Cu through the front panel. The rear of the package shows the specifications and features.

All is well protected in a showcase. A packet of salt prevent oxidation on the contact surface with the processor.

Here is the bundle : memory heatsinks, thermal paste, a fan speed control and a set of detailed installation instructions.

The heatsinks that come with the cooler are aluminum and are anodized a green color. Many of them are for the 8800 series. They are advanced heatsinks with spring system. For other VGA cards, you only need four small heatsinks. In this regard, a non "8800" normal version exists for the Hurricane without heatsinks and fixing plates for 8800.

Main characteristics : * 92mm fan * 4 copper heatpipes * "air duct" * Controled speed * Full compatibility (NVIDIA GeForce 8800/8600/8500/7900/7600 and ATI Radeon X2600/X1900/X1800/X1600 series) We can remark that the Hurricane HC92 Cu is not compatible with the NVIDIA GeForce 7800, GeForce 7900 GX2 and ATI Radeon X2900 series.

At first view, we can see that the enclosure has a special design that is not very attractive for everyone. It covers a radiator made by copper fins and with four heatpipes.

Heatpipes move from the surface contact into the radiator. Heatpipes' ends are irregular and anizoded.

A 92mm fan cools the heatsink. In fact, the fan enclosure wraps around the 92mm fan to direct air into and over it.

The heatsink seems having a structure with a not perfect air ducting. This could create some heat issues in a poorly ventilated case. The weight is 372 grams, it is light.

HC92 Cu can be used in 3 different configurations : - with the enclosure - without the enclosure - without the enclosure and the fan

The third configuration needs a very ventilated case.

The contact surface is protected with a clear adhesive tape that includes a warning message to remove it before installing. The surface is almost mirror polished.

Mounting, installation : Installation is easy. We must first remove the stock cooler from the VGA card and clean the chipsets. Fixation system is preassembled with the cooler. Holes can easily be identified. Once the card is installed, it becomes apparent that running two cards in SLI will be impossible with this cooler.

The enclosure can be removed with 4 small screws on the sides. Screws are very small. We must used a non standard screwdriver.

Tests, Results : We tested the Hurricane HC92 Cu 8800 on a 8800 GTS 320 MB by Club 3D and with the following configuration : - Intel E6750 Core 2 Duo - 2 GB G.Skill - Hiper 580W We measured the temperatures in degrees Celcius, first à low speed and then at full speed with the three configurations of the Hurricane.

We can see, with the enclosure, at low speed, performances are disappointing. Nevertheless, for iddle, Hurricane is 4°C less than the stock cooler. So we have good performance even at the low setting. Without the enclosure, in a ventilated case, it is better, with 6°C less. For load, without the enclosure and fan, Hurricane does not cool enough the VGA card. At high speed, performances are pretty good, better than the stock cooler, notably for load. http://mickaeln2006.free.fr

For the noise, Hurricane HC92 Cu 8800 is quiet at low speed but can be loud at high.

Conclusion : Sold 50€, the Hurricane HC92 CU by Zerotherm needs a ventilated case at first. Then it offers interesting performances particularly in load. Enclosure is not very useful. Mounting is easy. Pros - Large compatibility - Good performances without the enclosure - Easy installation - Lightweight Cons - Not compatible with NVIDIA GeForce série 7800, GeForce 7900 GX2 and ATI Radeon X2900 series - Special design - Can be loud at full speed - Enclosure and enclosure's screws Thanks to QuietPC.com for providing us with the sample.
