ABSTRACT The role and application of philosophical hermeneutics, narrative-story and conversation, as a research approach and professional reflection for gaining insight and understanding into the experience of living with chronic illness, cancer education, and preventable medical harm in healthcare will be explored. The influence of narrative and reflection to enhance understanding is achieved through conversation and interpretation. Multiple experiences of something that has happened to us provides new evidence through hermeneutic inquiry. Such reflection and interpretation can inform healthcare on numerous levels including medical / professional education and clinical practice. This presentation will provide an overview of how philosophical hermeneutics as a research approach can be used to inform healthcare and to create new understandings from reflection and interpretation within an interdisciplinary hermeneutic process.
