Plus de mille espèces d’animaux sont en danger d’extinction à présent, mais on peut toujours les voir dans plus de trois mille cinq cents parcs nationaux où elles sont protégées. Il y a un problème particulier dans les régions polaires où beaucoup d’espèces animales ont des difficultés à trouver la nourriture dont elles ont besoin. Un autre aspect du problème concerne l’impact des actions de l’homme sur leurs chances de survie. En Asie, pour des raisons culinaires ou médicinales, on utilise des produits à base de différentes parties du corps de certaines espèces animales rares. On ne peut voir les gorilles de l’Afrique Centrale que si on paie un guide qui sait non seulement où les trouver mais aussi comment s’en approcher. Plus au sud on ne permet plus la chasse à l’éléphant pour son ivoire. Cependant le rhinocéros blanc, comme il n’est pas aussi bien protégé, n’a pas eu cette chance. A l’avenir, selon les scientifiques, l’homme et les insectes seront les seuls à habiter notre planète. Finalement ces insectes, étant porteurs de maladies, risquent peut-être de devenir eux-mêmes une menace pour l’espèce humaine. (a)
