Six large o u t p u t Series 4300 s p l i t c o u p l e d v e r t i c a l in line pumps installed at the Aquar i u m serve t h e cold w a t e r chillers a n d h e a t e x c h a n g e r s , which s u p p l y t h e oceanic fish tanks. The p u m p s ' v e r t i c a l in-line design h a s saved on p l a n t r o o m space. The p u m p s r u n on d u t y / s t a n d b y b a s i s w i t h a u t o changeover to p r o v i d e back-up, m e e t p e a k d e m a n d s a n d p r o v i d e easy maintenance without disrupting services. They a r e r a t e d to a m a x i m u m flow r a t e of 91 l/ s e c o n d a n d cover h e a d s u p to 400 kPa. It offers a c c u r a t e c o n t r o l of w a t e r pressure, w a t e r levels, l o a d d e m a n d , transducer operation and pump t r i p p i n g . Savings of £8,000 p e r y e a r have been achieved at the Byker h o u s i n g e s t a t e of t h e City of Newcastle u p o n Tyne d u e to t h e r e p l a c e m e n t of t h e e s t a t e ' s existing d i s t r i c t h e a t i n g p r i m a r y c i r c u l a t i n g p u m p s by four new Sterling SIHI model ZENC pumps This w o r k is p a r t of Newc a s t l e City Council's s t r a t e g y to m o d e r n i s e t h e Byker D i s t r i c t Heating System and install p o w e r generation. The p u m p s were specified by t h e City's own Service Engineers. Previously, four large p u m p s were installed at t h e CHP station for t h e r e c i r c u l a t i o n of high t e m p e r a t u r e h o t w a t e r throughout t h e Byker estate. The new p u m p s i n c o r p o r a t e many unique design features w h i c h allow a n u n c o o l e d mec h a n i c a l s e a l to be u s e d a t much higher temperatures than c o n v e n t i o n a l p u m p s w i t h uncooled shaft seals. A m o n g o t h e r a d v a n t a g e s , t h e s e f e a t u r e s ensure a l o n g e r seal life, r e d u c e d maintenance needs, and the e l i m i n a t i o n of t r o u b l e s o m e gas b u i l d - u p in t h e m e c h a n i c a l seal w h i c h could l e a d to d r y running.
