EDITION 11/05

FTA A: Starting up 1 - Brief description Pulsar is a pulse emitter available in three or four-wire versions. It is powered by a cell with a life of about 15 years. Pulsar can be simply clipped onto all the meters from the Sappel modular range.

Fig.1

Pulsar is available in three-wire versions (part no. 909068)

Pulsar is available in four-wire versions (part no. 909058)

It provides the following information: - metering pulse - magnetic fraud detection - cable cut-off detection - unclipping detection - consideration of flow direction through compensating negative pulses

It provides the following information: - metering pulse - magnetic fraud detection - cable cut-off detection - unclipping detection - flow direction detection for adding and subtracting consumption units

2 - Configuration Pulsar can be simply clipped onto all the meters from the Sappel modular range with a blue or red ring. It may be connected to all reading transfer systems or remote reading systems, providing the polarity is followed (see FTA §5.2 and §6.3). Aquarius

The installation of a non-return valve is not indispensable, because Pulsar can handle back flows (see FTA §6 and §7). 3-2 Checking the installation Make sure that the electrical installation is compatible with the specifications of Pulsar described in paragraphs “5.2 and 6.3 Connections”. sappel

STARTING UP

3-3 Installation on meters from the Sappel modular range − If there is a cover on the meter, remove the cover by pushing out the hinge pin as shown in fig 4. − Keep the cover and pin in a safe place for assembly on the Pulsar device. − Carefully clean the top of the register without using solvent in order to remove any traces of soiling.

fig.4

− Place Pulsar so that the top lug of the register is aligned with the ring cut-out under the hinge of Pulsar (fig. 5). − Press the Pulsar ring down firmly onto the register till it clicks in place. − Put back the meter cover (if required). − The installation procedure is now complete.

4-

Connections

The Pulsar wire has three or four conductors, which are insulated in a protective sheath. The wires are to be connected carefully with the connectors supplied with Pulsar. They comprise a plastic shell containing a self-stripping blade. The connection is closed by a clamping tab (see fig. 6).

EDITION 11/05

Place the two wires to be connected in the connector without stripping them and press with special pliers. The self-stripping blade will be pushed up to the core for connection. The pocket of gel will burst, covering the splice and connection in the capsule (see fig. 7).

fig.7

fig.8

Stop tightening when the colour capsule has been pushed fully into the transparent part (fig. 8). Ideal tightening is achieved with E9BM or E9Y pliers from 3M. The connectors are sealed in respect of ambient humidity, but are not designed to be immersed in water. NB: In difficult cases (connectors that are always immersed), a submersible sealing kit is available (part no. 870 090); please contact Sappel. 5 - Thee-wire Pulsar 5-1 Operation Thee-wire Pulsar is a pulse emitter that takes account of the flow direction. Principle: If there is a reverse flow, three-wire Pulsar emits no pulse. When the flow resumes in the normal direction, three-wire Pulsar only resumes pulse emission when the water flow volume makes up for the reverse flow (up to a maximum of 500 pulses). Example for a DN 15 meter where each pulse represents 1 litre: - 100 litre flow -> 100 pulses - 50 litres reverse flow -> no pulse - 100 litres flow -> 50 pulses (100-50) 100-50+100=150 litres 100+50=150 pulses Pulsar can therefore take account of reverse flows equivalent to up to 500 pulses, i.e.: - 500 litres for a DN 15 -40 meter - 5000 litres for a DN 50 -125 meter - 50,000 litres for a DN 150-200 meter

NB: If the reverse flow is greater than 500 pulses, the installation of a non-return valve is recommended. 5-2 Connections Pulsar can be connected to an index repeater or any other pulse metering device by means of the brown (ground) wire and the white (pulse) wire. Fraud detection, which is used to identify any attempt at magnetic fraud, unclipping or pulse wire cutting is achieved by connecting the green wire (see fig. 9).

It is imperative to follow the voltage supply polarity. Otherwise, Pulsar may be damaged (if the power supply is above 30V / 100mA) or unable to generate correctly usable signals. The fitter shall be liable for any installation that does not comply with the above requirements, and Sappel disclaims all responsibility in that respect. 6 - Four-wire Pulsar 6-1 Operation Four-wire Pulsar emitters supply information that is used to determine the volumes of water passing through them in both directions, with the help of suitable processing device. Pulsar emits pulses relating to flow in any of the two directions (white wire) and a direction signal (yellow wire), which makes it possible to identify the direction of flow of each pulse. 6-2 Example of chronogram

fig.11 fig.10

In the case above, Pulsar emits 6 pulses and the additional direction signal, which indicates that the first two pulses are positive, the next three are negative and the last one is positive. - 2 litre flow: - 3 litre return: - 1 litre flow:

2 pulses, direction + 3 pulses, direction 1 pulse, direction +

NB: Four-wire Pulsar emitters can only be used along with measuring circuitry that can handle two signals - pulse and direction.

6-3 Connections Four-wire Pulsar can be connected to an index repeater or any other pulse metering device by means of the brown (ground) wire and the white (pulse) wire. The flow direction information is provided by the direction output, i.e. the yellow wire. Fraud detection, which is used to identify any attempt at magnetic fraud, unclipping or pulse wire cutting is achieved by connecting the green wire. Pulse

DESCRIPTION

EDITION 11/05

FTA D: Description 1 - General points Pulsar is an electric pulse emitter of the open-collector NPN type, powered by a cell with a life of about 15 years. It is made up of a grey polycarbonate ring (unbreakable synthetic material) and a 1.5m (threewire) or 3m (four-wire) electric cable. The electronic components are fully resin coated to withstand the installation conditions. A led is used for factory programming.

Fig.1 NB: The pulse weight is

1 litre for DN 15 - 40 Sappel meters 10 litres for DN 50 - 125 Sappel meters 100 litres for DN 150 - 200 Sappel meters for each revolution of the transfer disc (see details in fig. 2). 2 - Operation Pulsar is a ring with a sensor that uses the Hall effect principle and special electronic circuitry that processes the information and transmits it in the form of open-collector type signals (polarised). The Hall cells placed in the Pulsar are controlled by a magnet placed under the transfer disc of Sappel modular registers. Each disc revolution is equal to one pulse value.
