On 29 September 2006, Private Josh Klukie was killed in combat near Kandahar. In a poignant account in the Globe and Mail, 2 October 2006, fellow soldier Corporal Mike Blois was quoted as to what he said to his dying friend: “I was just telling him to keep fighting, you know, keep fighting, keep fighting.” With Canada’s commitment to the Afghanistan mission extending to at least 2009, it is almost certain that some of this year’s graduating cadets will be serving overseas in the near term and some may be wounded or killed. Even with all of the training and education RMC cadets receive, nothing can truly prepare them for the reality of war. That said, there is one particular sport at RMC that does help to provide the physical toughness and mental
resilience that young Canadians need to pass from being a civilian at peace to a soldier at war and possessing the will to keep fighting.

Avec l’engagement du Canada envers l’Afghanistan prolongé jusqu’en 2009, il est presque certain que quelques-uns des élèves-officiers diplômés de cette année serviront sous peu outre-mer et que peut-être il y aura des blessés ou des morts. Même avec la formation et l’éducation que les élèvesofficiers reçoivent au CMR, rien ne les prépare à la réalité de la guerre. Toutefois, il y a un sport au CMR qui améliore l’endurance physique et la résistance mentale dont les jeunes Canadiens ont besoin pour passer de civil en paix à soldat en guerre et acquérir la volonté de continuer à se battre.
