Pendant ce temps-là, Asopos le dieu-fleuve sort de son lit et, débordant de larmes, cherche sa fille aux quatre coins de la Grèce. Partout où il passe, ce ne sont qu’inondations. — Ah mais que les pères sont bêtes avec leur fille ! grogne Zeus. Même sur une île déserte, impossible d’être tranquille !
L’aigle est le roi des oiseaux. Il s’élève dans les airs toujours plus proche des cimes, seul capable, dit-on, de regarder le soleil en face sans se brûler les yeux. C’est pour cela que l’aigle symbolise Zeus dans toute sa gloire. Il est l’emblème du dieu des dieux. De l’Olympe où Zeus siège, il voit tout, sait tout. Il commande aux nuages, à la pluie, au tonnerre, au vent et tient dans sa main un éclair, le foudre, rappelant aux héros les plus téméraires, lorsque Zeus le lance à leurs pieds, que c’est lui qui dirige, sur la Terre comme au Ciel. Le monde souterrain n’échappe pas non plus à son autorité. Zeus a donc bien des qualités, mais tout le monde le sait : c’est un cœur d’artichaut ! Il tombe très souvent amoureux. C’est géné le meilleur des Centaures, le plus sage et le plus généreux. Il est né d’une étrange histoire d’amour. Son père, Cronos, s’était épris en secret de la belle Phylira, fille de l’Océan. Mais un jour, Rhéa, la femme de Cronos, les métamor surprit enlacés. Pour fuir sa colère, Cronos se métamorphosa aussitôt en cheval et Phylira en jument. De leur étreinte amoureuse naquit Chiron.

Les dragons sont souvent recrutés par les divinités comme gardiens de trésors, de sources, de jardins aux pommes d’or. Qui veut s’en emparer sera réduit en cendres ou bien empoisonné par leur souffle fétide ! Avec leur physique à faire peur, ils sont naturellement repoussants. Ces monstres possèdent aussi une autre particularité : ils surgissent tout à coup d’une caverne, d’une sombre forêt ou d’un marais quand on ne s’y attend pas. En voici la preuve. Un jour, Cadmos, fils du roi de Tyr, arrive avec ses compagnons à l’endroit désigné par les dieux pour y construire sa ville. Leur campement à peine installé, Cadmos leur dit : — Pour que tout se passe bien, autant honorer nos dieux avant de tracer les premières fondations. Trouvez de l’eau pour les rites sacrés, nous la verserons sur cette terre. Et les divinités nous protégeront.
Après des heures de marche, les compagnons découvrent enfin une source. L’eau est claire et pure. Ils en remplissent leurs vases sacrés quand un dragon sort de sa caverne. C’est lui le gardien de cette source. Sa tête est surmontée d’une crête d’or, ses yeux lancent des éclairs. Et, dans sa gueule grande ouverte, on aperçoit une énorme langue divisée en trois fourches, et trois rangées de dents. En un instant, tous sont broyés par l’immense mâchoire de la bête. Les heures tournent et Cadmos ne voit toujours pas ses compagnons revenir. Que s’est-il passé ? Inquiet, il part à leur recherche en suivant leurs traces. Horreur ! Les vases sacrés sont brisés. Sur le sol ensanglanté, il ne reste plus rien de ses compagnons. Cadmos, désespéré, découvre les empreintes près de la source. Mangés par un dragon ? se demande-t-il incrédule, quand le monstre surgit pour le dévorer lui aussi.
