Over monumentaal zwijgen On Monumental Silences is een rubberen afgietsel van het monument voor Pater De Deken in Wilrijk door Jean-Marie Hérain, opgericht in 1904. Deze meest recente aanwinst van de M HKA-collectie is de einduitkomst van de interactieve artistieke reflectie rond de sculptuur door Ibrahim Mahama, gecureerd door Antonia Alampi voor de Antwerpse kunsthal Extra City, in een samenwerking met Middelheimmuseum. In 2015 voorzag het districtsbestuur van Wilrijk het oorspronkelijke beeld reeds van een informatiebord met de historische context, opgesteld in samenwerking met het Koninklijk Museum voor Midden-Afrika in Tervuren. Recent zei de Antwerpse kunstenares Otobong Nkanga dat we rond deze sculpturen kunnen samenkomen om de titels en verhalen die met hen samengaan te heroverwegen en zo het gesprek te openen voor een veelheid aan perspectieven, eerder dan één enkel verhaal. Dat is ook de inzet van Ibrahim Mahama. On Monumental Silences On Monumental Silences is a rubber cast of the monument to Father De Deken in Wilrijk, designed by Jean-Marie Hérain and erected in 1904. This most recent addition to the M HKA collection is the end result of an interactive artistic reflection on this monument by Ibrahim Mahama, curated by Antonia Alampi for the Antwerp Kunsthal Extra City, in collaboration with Middelheimmuseum. In 2015, the Wilrijk district provided a series of informational plaques to accompany the original sculpture, providing the historical context. These plaques were created with the help of the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren. Antwerp based artist Otobong Nkanga recently noted that we can find common ground through these sculptures and reconsider the titles and stories attached to them, allowing an open dialogue with a multitude of perspectives, rather than a one-sided story.
