OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMPANIES TO PARTICIPATE IN THE JOHANNESBURG WORLD SUMMIT ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The World Summit on Sustainable Development to be held in Johannesburg in August and September 2002 (exact dates awaiting confirmation), will provide a number of opportunities for companies or sectors to associate themselves and their products and services with this event. By doing so they will be part of an international event which is expected to bring many thousands of world leaders in government, business, labour, NGOs and other civil society groupings to Johannesburg. In addition to the costs of staging the Summit, the South African government are responsible for the incremental costs of relocating relevant UN staff and services in South Africa for the duration. Key areas of opportunity are in the IT and telecommunications and broadcast equipment areas, the provision of access security equipment and services, transport, the support of special programmes and the secondment of staff or student volunteers to the Summit. Discounted professional services are also required in a number of fields. Key areas of opportunity: Information technology. All Summit venues (Sandton Convention Centre (UN); Gallagher Estate or Nasrec (NGOs); Hilton (Business), etc will be interconnected allowing for interactive meetings and allowing for meetings to be seen by others. In addition additional desk top and other computing requirements will be required by the volunteers and additional staff who will be needed immediately prior to and during the Summit. ƒ Hardware (R14.3 m) and software (R8.6m) as well as local area network servers will be required during the Summit by the approximately 300 support staff (UN personnel and volunteers) who will be needed on the administrative side. ƒ IT systems and network development services (R6,8m) ƒ IT consulting services (R27m) ƒ printers, ƒ Copy service for the Summit ƒ Media/Press centres at key venues. This may be a valuable opportunity to demonstrate innovative technology, alternative fuels and low emissions vehicles. The site is where the remains of "Mrs Ples" one of our oldest ancestors was found. ƒ A monument will be built to hold a collection of soils from all the continents. Empowerment of previously disadvantaged groups is a factor in awarding of contracts and tenders.
