The story "It’s not us who make the journey, but the journey that makes us". Félix and Filomène dive with wild abandon and all the energy of their irrepressible double-act into the great adventure, which will lead them way beyond anything they could ever have imagined. Lifelong travellers, they brilliantly write the chapters of their crazy clownish epic, right before our very eyes.

Director’s Notes It’s been 20 years since our clown characters, Filomène and Félix began regularly drawing us right into our bodies and hearts, so that they can act out the great adventure of their little lives. Four shows later and here they are, inviting themselves in again! This time, however, they need us to make room for them in our bodies, hearts and even our very souls, so that they can live out their paradoxes to the full: More essential than ever, but still pointless. Even more powerful, but at the same time, even more fragile. To put it simply, even more clownish, but more human than ever. For that, they don’t want anything that isn’t absolutely necessary. Like every born traveller, they prefer to travel light: Dialogue, but no words… A thousand different objects, but not a single prop… An infinite number of landscapes, but no sets… An endless voyage, without ever leaving the confines of their little stage. “Voyage Voyage !” they whisper to us… We will try to follow them, without worrying too much where we end up, because just like you, we have a taste for this Adventure that we have been called upon to live!

The Company For 20 years, Le Voyageur Debout (The Standing Traveller) has been treading the path of Creativity and Human Connections. One show is produced each year: the result of our collective work and the fruit of our human and artistic evolution. It is a new opportunity to connect with audiences and share the fleeting magic of face-to-face encounters. This is of no interest to us, unless it touches people’s hearts. Whether through laughter or tears, what matters is that something authentic passes from the performer to the audience, that a gulf is bridged and that there is a genuine connection.

A Few Facts Since 1996, 20 original pieces of theatre have been created and 1863 performances given (shows of all types, not counting visits and activities at schools, hospitals, prisons and conferences), across 410 towns and cities (an average of 89 tour dates every year).

Jean-Luc Bosc Stage director, actor’s director, creator of universes, actor… he describes himself as an artist-craftsman. His work is based on mutual trust. Out of this comes a fruitful encounter between creativity, his imaginary, his intuition and his actors’ commitment to him. An important part of the creation of his shows is dedicated to improvisation: a wonderful creative tool, which sometimes gives dazzling insights into the way human beings function. His work on the Clown character constitutes a key component of his career and his artistic identity. It has even become an important and recognizable feature of the Company’s activities. He attaches a great deal of importance to the art of teaching as a natural process of ‘impartation’ and support for each participant in their growth towards a higher level of creativity. Since 2013, he has been exploring the art of masks in his adaptation of Molière’s ‘L’Avare’.

Educational File The Clown… someone just like you and me, but with a little plus!

Here are a few of the themes which can be addressed by teachers either before or after a show and which will resonate during the show itself. Is language just about words? The Clown character (as we depict it) uses his or her body to express experiences, including emotions! Body language is another wonderful way to say things. It is not us who make the journey, but the journey that makes us. Just a little philosophical intro… What makes us want to travel? What personal qualities are required of us when we travel? Félix and Filomène set off on a journey; they face difficult situations; they are going to have to adapt, make themselves understood and pull together. The lie. The point of departure for the journey Félix and Filomène are about to undertake is a lie told by Félix to Filomène. He tells her a lie for her own protection… Why is it important to go to the theatre? Children are increasingly exposed to images, to virtual reality, to things which are not ‘real’. Going to see a live show is an extraordinary experience. It pivots on an encounter between the audience and the actor. Each performance is unique and its success depends on the rules of listening and respect.

Onceuponatime,therewasFilomène When they enter the class, the children are welcomed by Marie and Jean-Luc, players with the Le Voyageur Debout theatre company. They talk to them about the world of the theatre and more especially, the character of the Clown, its origins and its very being. Talking about a clown is one thing, but actually, meeting one is even better and so Marie herself will become her clown character. The transformation takes place before the children’s very eyes. It is a magical moment, which normally only happens on the other side of the looking glass of the stage: the dressing room. The white, black and red makeup is drawn on and then she dons her costume. Marie fades into the background and with her red nose in place, Filomène bursts into the room, occupies the space and meets the children, face-to-face and unscripted. Everyone introduces themselves and the children talk to Filomène, asking her questions about life in general, her children, everyday things. They even ask her to act out an important life event that they have thought up. The time with Filomène flies by. She must return to her hectic schedule… she has so much to do. Bye-bye Filomène, see you soon. Marie is back. While she is taking off her makeup, the children ask her questions about her work. This activity is both fun and educational, as well as being a perfect introduction to the ‘Voyage Voyage !’ show. Duration: 50 minutes Technical Requirements Please ensure that a small area of the classroom is kept clear for the activity (4m x 3m), with an electric socket available. Please provide facilities with a water supply, where the performer can change. Warn the neighbouring classes about possible noise and laughter!
