http://www.al-jazeera.com/ The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Ibn Khalifa Al Thani, offered $150M spread over five years- to fund a new TV station, aimed to be free and independent. The new station attracted some of the former BBC staff. Though with public financing, the satellite channel is a private company. The staff of the station, -50 journalists and 350 people in total-, is formed by natives of nearly all Arab countries. The channel has 35 bureaus around the world. The station has addressed, since 1996, various themes considered taboo in the Arab world such as the absence of democratic institutions or the persecution of political dissidents. Jordan Recalls Ambassador Over Al-Jazeera Broadcast Associat ed Press/August 10, 2002 Jordan recalled its ambassador to Qatar in a diplomatic row over a program on Al-Jazeera satellite channel that the government said was insulting to the royal family, the official news agency reported. The Osama Shortfall Katarzyna Moreno/Forbes/March 4, 2002 Broadcasting bin Laden's ramblings will likely cost Al-Jazeera $4 million in lost advertising --perhaps a quarter of its annual revenue. The Saudi government didn't like the pro-Osama war coverage, sources close to the network say, and pressured Saudi-based companies and other multinationals to boycott it. The New York Times opined that Al-Jazeera "often slants its news with a vicious anti-Israel and anti-American bias" and airs "deeply irresponsible reporting [that] reinforces the region's anti-American views."

The 27 satellites that make up the spatial segment of the GPS emit 2 radio frequencies, called L1 (1575.42 MHz) et L2 (1227.6 MHz). They move in 6 orbital planes at approximately 20,200 kilometers in altitude. The GPS receivers, which constitute the user end of the system, are devices capable of carrying out measurements on these 2 signals allowing them to calculate the position of an observer in real time, everywhere and at every moment on Earth, whatever the atmospheric conditions.

Operation Enduring Freedom provided the Department of Defense with real-time instruction in 21st century war fighting. The same could be said of our relationship with the news media: We’re learning lessons all the time. Along the way, Defense has successfully facilitated broad access to military operations, made some mistakes and, throughout the process, learned important lessons that will be helpful in guiding the military-media relationship in the future. Since September 11, the department has responded to more than 42,000 media inquiries, hosted more than 5,000 media visits to military facilities, given more than 1,500 interviews, and conducted more than 225 press briefings. (…) Journalists have accompanied deployed troops more than 1,400 times. The Motion Picture Association(MPA) was formed in 1945 in the aftermath of World War II to reestablish Americanfilms in the world market, and to respond to the rising tide of protectionism resulting in barriers aimed at restricting the importation of American films. Since its early days, the MPA, often referred to now as "a little State Department," has expanded to cover a wide range of foreign activities falling in the diplomatic, economic, and political arenas. The Motion Picture Association conducts these activities from its headquarters in Los Angeles, California and from offices in Washington, D.C.; Brussels; Rome; New Delhi; Rio de Janeiro; Singapore; Mexico City; Toronto; and Jakarta. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and its international counterpart, the Motion Picture Association (MPA) serve as the voice and advocate of the American motion picture, home video and television industries, domestically through the PAA and internationally through the MPA.The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) serves its members from its offices in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. On its board of directors are the Chairmen and Presidents of the seven major producers and distributors of motion picture and television programs in the United States. Burson-Marsteller Using the latest communications technologies and polling techniques, as well as an array of high-level political connections, PR flacks routinely "manage" issues for government and corporate clients and "package" them for public consumption. The result is a "democracy" in which citizens are turned into passive receptacles of "disinfotainment" and "advertorials" and in which critics of the status quo are defined as ignorant meddlers and/or dangerous outsiders. Clients include: The Nigerian government during the Biafran war, to discredit reports of genocide; the fascist junta that ruled Argentina during the 70's and early 80's, to attract foreign investment; the Indonesian government, which got into power through a CIA-sponsored bloodbath (it should be pointed out, however, that B-M denies that it is handling the issue of genocide in East Timor). B-M also represented the late communist Romanian despot Nicolae Ceaucescu. B-M's environmental services have benefited industrial polluters, such as the following: Babcock & Wilcox, when its nuclear power plant in Three Mile Island had its famous mishap in 1979; Union Carbide, to handle the public relations crisis caused by the Bhopal tragedy in 1984; Exxon, to counter the negative press coverage it got in the wake of the Exxon-Valdez oil spill in 1989. B-M was hired by the pharmaceutical corporation Eli Lilly and Monsanto subsidiary Nutra Sweet to promote the use of the genetically-engineered synthetic bovine growth hormone rBGH. B-M's campaign to neutralize the opposition to rBGH included the use of spies to penetrate activist groups. (source: Carmelo Ruiz)
