Londoners endorse diversity The Guardian, Thursday 22 January 2004 02.25 GMT Most Londoners are proud of the diversity of the capital and believe race relations in the city are good, according to a survey. Pollsters Mori said 79% of those canvassed enjoyed the cultural diversity of London. Thirty per cent cited the mix of people as one of their top six reasons for living there. The most enthusiastic endorsement for a multiracial, multicultural capital was provided by those in inner London, where the bulk of the ethnic minority population lives. The poll follows the release of another survey this week suggesting that four out of 10 white people in Britain would be reluctant to have a black neighbour. That survey, also conducted by Mori, found that 39% of people across the country wanted to live with people of the same ethnic background. Forty-one per cent of whites and 26% of ethnic minorities wanted the races to live separately. Ken Livingstone, who commissioned the Annual London Survey, said: "Londoners value the cultural diversity of this city and the fact that people of different race, religion and nationalities can live side by side." Thirty-five per cent endorsed Mr Livingstone's performance as mayor and 21% said they were dissatisfied with him.
