Mot de Bienvenue

Bienvenue au 33e anniversaire du Festival une célébration du progrès !

Chaque année, les festivaliers demandent “Quel est donc votre secret ? Comment gardez-vous les choses fraîches et créatives année après année ?” Et la réponse est vraiment très simple : nous nous concentrons exclusivement sur le ​​ progrès ! En fait, c’est cette même méthode de réflexion prospective qui m’a permis de démarrer le Festival il y a 33 ans avec mon ami Charles Magras. Nous nous sommes demandé “Que pouvons-nous faire culturellement l’année prochaine, qui serait très spécial pour Saint-Barth ? La première année nous avons donc fait quelque chose d’innovant : nous avons apporté la musique classique professionnelle sur notre petite île bien-aimée au milieu de la mer des Caraïbes ! Et depuis, chaque année, notre festival continue d’innover, de progresser, et toujours avec la plus haute qualité possible. Avec l’aide annuelle de généreux donateurs comme vous, qui contribuez aux revenus indispensables sur lesquels ce Festival repose, nous pouvons bâtir notre fondation de la musique classique. Nous avons prévu de la musique classique de renommée mondiale ainsi que de l’opéra et du jazz et de la danse et des programmes éducatifs et de sensibilisation des seniors et... La liste s’allonge encore et encore ! Ainsi, lorsque vous me saluez lors d’un concert, votre don en main et que vous vous demandez ce que je pense, maintenant vous savez ! Nous sommes impatients de jouer, d’échanger culturellement, de démarrer les programmes éducatifs qui sont stimulants, engageants et excitants autant pour nos artistes que pour les spectateurs... et les progrès futurs à venir ! Every year, supporters ask “So what IS your secret? How DO you keep things fresh and creative year after year?” And the answers are really very simple: we concentrate exclusively on progress! In fact, that method of forward thinking is exactly how the Festival got started over 33 years ago when I began this work with my friend Charles Magras. We asked one another “What can we do next year, culturally, that will be very special for St. Barth?” And so in the first year we did something brand new: we brought professional classical music to our beloved little island in the middle of the Caribbean Sea! And every year since then our Festival has added new aspects that are innovative, progressive, and always of the highest quality possible. With the annual help of generous sponsors like you, who contribute the much-needed monies that this Festival relies upon, we can build our classical music foundation. We have included world-class classical music and opera and jazz and dance and childrens’ educational programs and senior outreach and... The list of progress goes on and on! So when you greet me at a concert with your donation in hand and you’re wondering what I’m thinking, now you know! I’m thinking that we’re looking forward to performances, cultural exchange and educational programs that are stimulating, engaging and exciting for our performers and generous audience members alike... and the future progress to come! Mot du Président FESTIVAL DE MUSIQUE 2017 Depuis 1985, le Festival de musique scande la vie de notre île et s’inscrit presque naturellement dans notre paysage artistique et culturel. Cette évidence ferait presque oublier que cet événement existe grâce à la passion, au travail et à l’exigence de ses organisateurs. La programmation proposée sera encore une fois de grande qualité, tant par le choix des œuvres que des interprètes. Le Festival de musique est une de ces pierres fondatrices sur lesquelles s’édifie patiemment une vie culturelle et artistique riche à Saint Barthélemy. Chaque année, l’offre s’enrichit, se diversifie et se complète. Cinéma, littérature, musique, danse, théâtre, peinture, sculpture : tous les arts ou presque ont désormais leur place, soit à l’occasion d’événements culturels, soit au travers de nombreuses associations, de galeristes ou de mécènes. Ces initiatives formidables se complètent et résonnent entre elles. De ce foisonnement naît le dialogue des œuvres. Je suis certain que l’année 2017 ouverte en beauté par le Festival de musique poursuivra cette dynamique vertueuse. Bon Festival à tous.

St Barts Music Festival 2017 Since 1985, the Music Festival has been a key feature of our island life and has become almost a natural part of our artistic and cultural landscape. We could thus almost forget that this event exists thanks to the passion, hard work and diligence of its organizers. The program is once again of high quality, in terms of both the repertoire and the artists. The Music Festival is one of the foundation stones upon which the rich cultural and artistic life of St Barts has been progressively built. Each year, the repertoire of island events is enriched, diversified and enhanced. Films, literature, music, dance, theater, fine art and sculpture - practically all the arts can now be found, through cultural festivals or numerous associations, galleries or patrons. These amazing initiatives complement and resonate with one another. From this wealth of ingenuity emerges a harmonious dialogue of creativity. I am confident that 2017, with its grand opening by the Music Festival, will see the continuation of this exemplary dynamic. I wish you all an enjoyable Festival.

Les origines du John Ellis Sextet remontent à 2014, l’époque où John Ellis était compositeur au 18th Street Arts Center à Santa Monica, Californie. Intrigué par la multitude de couleurs entre les six instruments, le Sextet a développé sa sonorité musicale et a été créé a l’apogée de sa résidence. Depuis, le groupe a joué dans divers lieux autour de NYC, y compris le Smalls, l’Eglise St. Peter, The Jazz Gallery et le Dizzy’s. Le Sextet enregistrera en studio cette année.

The origins of the John Ellis Sextet trace back to John’s time as a composing fellow at the 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica, CA in 2014. Intrigued by the color possibilities of the six instruments, the Sextet’s musical sound developed and was debuted at the culmination of his residency. Since then the band has performed in various venues around NYC including Smalls, St. Peter’s Church, The Jazz Gallery and Dizzy’s. The Sextet will be heading into the recording studio this year.

Ancien chef percussionniste de l’Orchestre symphonique de Chicago, Edward (Ted) Atkatz a joué avec l’Atlanta Symphony, le Boston Symphony, le Boston Pops, le Hong-Kong Philharmonique, le Houston Symphony, le Los Angeles Philharmonique, le Pacific Symphony, le Seattle Symphony, et le Santa Barbara Symphony. Ted est musicien de studio à Los Angeles, aussi bien qu’artiste dans le monde musical qu’avec son propre orchestre NYCO. Ted est aussi membre de la faculté Lynn Conservatory of Music à Boca Raton, du Music Academy of the West à Santa Barbara et du Texas Music Festival à Houston.

Former Principal Percussionist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Edward (Ted) Atkatz has performed with the Atlanta Symphony, Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pacific Symphony, Seattle Symphony, and the Santa Barbara Symphony. Ted is a faculty member at Lynn Conservatory of Music in Boca Raton; the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara; and the Texas Music Festival.

Il s’est produit au Canada, en Angleterre, en Ecosse, en Irlande, en Allemagne, en Suisse, en Pologne, en Lettonie, à Trinidad et Tobago, et également au Festival Verbier, à Ottawa au Festival International de Musique de Chambre et au Festival d’Edinburgh. Durant les cinq dernières années il fut artiste résident puis Directeur Artistique du Festival Pontiac Enchanté, une série de concerts donnés à Luskville au Québec.

Carson Becke has performed in Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Latvia, and Trinidad and Tobago. He has performed in the Verbier Festival, Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, and Edinburgh Fringe Festival. For the past five years he has been artist in residence and then Artistic Director of Festival Pontiac Enchante, a concert series in Luskville, Quebec.

Noah est Premier Violon et Soliste du Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Lauréat du concours Queen Elisabeth, promotion 2009 à Bruxelles, il a aussi remporté à Paris le 3ème prix et un prix spécial de créativité, au concours du Long-Thibaud International, promotion 2008 ainsi que le 1er prix au concours du Vibrarte International Music. Il s’est également vu discerner le 1er prix et le prix spécial pour la meilleure interprétation de Bach à l’occasion du 14éme Concours International de Violon “Andrea Postacchini” à Fermo en Italie. Noah Bendix-Balgley est un soliste reconnu par de nombreux orchestres en Europe et aux Etats-Unis et particulièrement l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France (Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris) et l’Orchestre National de Belgique. En Février 2014 Noah démarre une nouvelle étape de sa carrière en tant que 1er Solo Konzertmeister pour l’Orchestre Philharmonic de Berlin.

Noah Bendix-Balgley is concertmaster and soloist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Emil Beronius Magras (1990) est originaire à la fois de l’île de Saint-Barthélemy et de Stockholm (Suède). Il commence la flûte dès l’âge de 5 ans en France puis intègre l’école de musique Lilla Akademien à Stockholm. C’est au conservatoire de Malmö qu’il obtient son master avec le professeur Anders Ljungar-Chapelon. Au cours de ces années d’étude, Emil a participé à des tournées en Europe et en Asie et a suivi des masterclass avec notamment Philippe Bernold, Benoit Fromanger, James Galway, Cecilie Löken, Göran Marcusson. Emil Beronius Magras, born in 1990, was raised both on St Barts and Stockholm, Sweden. He began playing the flute at the age of five in France, and later attended the Lilla Akademien School of Music in Stockholm. He obtained his Master’s degree at Malmö Academy of Music, studying under Anders Ljungar-Chapelon. During his years of study, Emil performed on musical tours of Europe and Asia, and took masterclasses with well-known flautists such as Philippe Bernold, Benoit Fromanger, James Galway, Cecilie Löken and Göran Marcusson. Emil regularly performs with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, the Malmö Opera and the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra.

Il est devenu membre de l’Orchestre du Metropolitan Opera en 1986 en tant que contrebassiste principal jusqu’en 2013. Il est actuellement Contrebassiste Principal au Philarmonique de New York. Il enseigne à l’Ecole de Musique de Manhattan et préside la section Contrebasse de l’Ecole Julliard. Tim participe chaque année au Festival de Musique de Sarasota et a donné une master class et un récital à l’Université des Arts de Tokyo.

Tim began playing the double bass at age seven and was playing professionally by thirteen. He attended the Curtis Institute of Music and during his senior year joined the Chicago Symphony. He became a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in 1986 and was principal double bassist there through 2013. Currently, he is principal double Bassist with the New York Philarmonic. He teaches at the Manhattan School of Music, and is Chairman of the double bass department at the Juilliard School. Each year Tim joins the Sarasota Music Festival to play as well as coach, and gave a master class and recital at Tokyo University of the Arts.

Roberta Cooper won the Artists International Competition which sponsored her Carnegie Hall debut. Since 1970 Frances has lived part time on St-Barth. She co-founded and is president of the Saint Barth Music Festival. She is honorary president of the Pittsburgh Chamber Music Society and former president of the Pittsburgh Symphony Association. For many years she has been an active board member of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony. With Morton Gould she commissioned two compositions for his program called Young Audiences (“The Jogger and the Dinosaur” and “Hosedown”), which have had many international performances. She was a violist with the Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra and in 2011 she received the French Chevalier of Arts & Letters Award.

French cellist Francis Gouton has given concerts as a soloist and chamber musician in most of the major concert halls and festivals on all continents. As a soloist he performs with the Stuttgart State Orchestra, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. He performs the 6 Bach Suites as well a contemporary music, made several radio and CD recordings of unknown masterworks of the French repertoire. For many years he has explored the world of Bach in close cooperation with Helmuth Rilling and as a solo cellist of the Stuttgart Bach Collegium. He travelled to Haiti in January 2011 to teach in a school in Port-au-Prince. Francis is professor at the Trossingen music conservatory (Germany) and teaches world-wide.

Robert Langevin is the Principal Flute of the New York Philharmonic. In May 2001, he made his solo debut with them in the North American premiere of Siegfried Matthus’s Concerto for Flute and Harp with Philharmonic Principal Harp, Nancy Allen and Music Director Kurt Masur. His October 2012 solo performance in Nielsen’s Flute Concerto was recorded for inclusion in The Nielsen Project, the Orchestra’s multi-season traversal of all of the Danish composer’s symphonies and concertos. Prior to the Philharmonic, Mr. Langevin held the Principal Flute Chair of the Pittsburgh Symphony. Mr. Langevin served as associate principal of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra for 13 years, playing on more than 30 recordings.

Dante Lundgren (1990). Pendant son adolescence il joue de la guitare électrique dans un groupe de hardrock local avant de déménager à Stockholm où il s’intéresse à la musique classique à l’école Lilla Akademien. Dante Lundgren, born in 1990, played the electric guitar for a local hard rock group during his teenage years, before moving to Stockholm where he became interested in classical music while studying at the Lilla Akademien School of Music. Dante has since graduated from the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and the Franz Liszt Weimar University of Music in Germany. Dante now plays for several classical and hard rock groups, as well as composing and playing music for television productions.

Named after the great 20th century Polish composer Witold Lutosławski, the Lutosławski Quartet is one of the leading polish quartets. The quartet has appeared in leading world Festivals. The ensemble has cooperated with IRCAM – Centre Pompidou in Paris. Lutosławski Quartet has enjoyed collaborations with Garrick Ohlsson, Kevin Kenner and many other artists. They record on Naxos, NFM, DUX and CD Accord. Lutosławski Quartet performs mainly music of the 20th and 21st centuries, with a focus on Polish music and is one of the resident ensembles of the National Forum of Music in Wrocław.

Jeffrey Lyman has been on the faculty of the University of Michigan since 2006, and has earned a reputation as both an eminent performer and historian of the bassoon and its repertoire. Recent activities include his membership in the Rushes Ensemble, which in the fall of 2012 recorded and gave the premier performances of a groundbreaking 50-minute work for 7 bassoons by New York composer Michael Gordon. Also in 2012 he launched a publishing venture with TrevCo Music, and so far has issued 9 editions of works for bassoon by the great French, Italian and German bassoon pedagogues of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the summer of 2013, he and his colleagues Nancy Ambrose King and Martin Katz recorded five classic duos and trios for oboe, bassoon and piano, including works by Jolivet, Villa-Lobos, Poulenc, Grandval and Planel.

A native of New York City, 18-year-old Alec Manasse has received instruction from Shari Hoffman, Laura Flax, Alan Kay and of course his father, clarinetist Jon Manasse. He has already won competitions and job opportunities including the Juilliard Pre College concerto competition and NPR’s “From The Top.” Alec is an avid chamber musician and is now beginning to play more alongside his father. He is currently a freshman at the Juilliard School.

In the spring of 2014, his music will be premiered/Stephenson spent 17 seasons with the Naples (FL) Philharmonic as a trumpeter, a position he won immediately upon graduating from the New England Conservatory of Music.

Leo van Debré (1990) est né à Moscou et a grandi en Suède où il a joué en tant que co premier viloncelliste au Swedish Youth Orchestra dans des concerts au Carnegie Hall, Chicago Symphony Hall et au Strathmore Hall. ll a ensuite étudié à Lilla Akademien puis a obtenu sa licence au Kungliga Musik Högskolan de Stockholm. Leo van Debré was born in Moscow in 1990 and raised in Sweden, where he became co-first cellist for the Swedish Youth Orchestra, playing in concerts at Carnegie Hall, Chicago Symphony Hall and Strathmore Hall. He then studied at the Lilla Akademien School of Music in Stockholm, and later graduated from Stockholm’s Royal College of Music. Leo has performed with chamber music groups and played with the Verbier Festival orchestra for three years. He has since begun a Master’s degree, studying under Professor Louise Hopkins at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

Heidi is Principal Harp with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. She has also won many awards including first place in the Young Professional Division of the American Harp Society National Competition. She regularly presents master-classes at the Colburn School, University of Southern California, Carnegie Mellon University, Tulane University and others.

Elle a rejoint le Chamber Orchestra de Los Angeles en 1999 comme Principal Deuxième Violon et se produit désormais en soliste avec cet orchestre. Elle a participé à de nombreux Festivals : Aspen, Tanglewood, Santa Fe, Schleswig-Holstein et Villa Musica en Allemagne. Elle a fait des tournées en Europe et en Asie avec l’Ensemble de Jazz Uri Caine.

Originally from Chile, Josefina earned her music degree at Indiana University and performed with the Indiana Chamber Orchestra. She was a prize-winner in the Osaka International Chamber Music and Pasadena Instrumental Competitions. She joined the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra in 1999 as their Principal Second Violin and also appeares as soloist with them. She participates in many festivals including Aspen, Tanglewood, Santa Fe, Schleswig-Holstein and Villa Musica in Germany. She toured Europe and Asia with Uri Caine’s Jazz Ensemble.

His accolades include “Best Organist” award in 2012 by the Jazz Jounalists’ Association and he has twice been a guest on Marian McPartland’s acclaimed NPR show ‘Piano Jazz.’ Versace’ numerous recordings are on the SteepleChase and Criss Cross labels, and as a side-man on over 75 more musical releases. He holds a masters degree from the Eastman School of Music and spent eight years as a tenured associate professor in the Jazz studies department at the University of Oregon.

Premiering this season as orchestral conductor, Paul Watkins, also enjoys a distinguished career as a concerto cellist and chamber musician. Watkins was a member of the Nash Ensemble from 1997 to 2013, and joined the Emerson String Quartet in May of 2013. He is a regular guest artist at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York and in 2009 became the first-ever Music Director of the English Chamber Orchestra. His first recording as a conductor (the Berg and Britten violin concertos with Daniel Hope) received a Grammy® nomination. Since winning the 2002 Leeds Conducting Competition he has conducted all the major British orchestras; as well as the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Prague Symphony, the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic, the Melbourne Symphony and Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra.

Violinist Sandy Yamamoto has dazzled audiences in concert performances around the globe for the past three decades as a soloist and as a member of the Miró Quartet. Ms. Yamamoto has appeared with orchestras throughout the US and Europe to critical acclaim. With the Miró Quartet, she has performed on the major concert stages of the world, regularly concertizing in North America, South America, Europe and Asia. She was a recipient of the Naumburg Chamber Music and Cleveland Quartet Awards, won First Prize at the Banff International String Quartet Competition and was one of the first chamber musicians to be awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant.

Diplômé d’une licence et d’un master avec mention de l’université de Yale, Owen a été Violoncelle Principal du Symphonique de Yale et Soliste pour sa tournée européenne en 1986. Il a été membre des Symphoniques de New Haven et de Pittsburgh, puis a rejoint le Symphonique de Boston en 1991. Ses interprétations ont été enregistrées à la Radio Publique Nationale et il a souvent joué en concert avec l’auteur/interprète James Taylor. Il joue un rôle actif dans le projet STEP (un programme d’entrainement et d’éducation pour cordes dédié aux étudiants de couleur).

A Cum Laude graduate of Yale University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees, Owen served as principal cello for the Yale Symphony and was soloist for its 1986 European tour. He was a member of the New Haven and Pittsburgh symphonies until joining the Boston Symphony in 1991. His performances have been broadcast on National Public Radio and he has frequently played in concert with singer/songwriter James Taylor. He is currently active in Project STEP (String Training and Education Program for students of color).
