A Paris, le 10 dcembre 1948, le droit l'ducation fut reconnu par l'Assemble gnrale des Nations Unies comme un droit fondamental de toute personne humaine. Ce droit nouveau, intgr la Dclaration universelle des droits de l'homme dans son article 26, se trouve ainsi mis au mme niveau que tous les autres droits garantissant l'galit entre personnes et le plein exercice des liberts publiques et individuelles. Ce droit individuel implique des engagements, des devoirs collectifs (aux niveaux familial, communautaire, national et international), il revt un caractre multidimensionnel, travers ses aspects historiques, politiques, juridiques, conomiques, dmographiques, culturels, linguistiques, pdagogiques, philosophiques ou encore thiques.
