Le livre raconte comment, au dbut du rgne de Louis XVIII, le 24 fvrier 1815, jour o Napolon quitte l'le d'Elbe, Edmond Dants, jeune marin de dix-neuf ans, second du navire Le Pharaon dbarque Marseille pour s'y fiancer le lendemain avec la belle Catalane Mercds. Trahi par des amis jaloux, il est dnonc comme conspirateur bonapartiste et enferm dans une gele du chteau d'If, au large de Marseille. Aprs quatorze annes, d'abord rduit la solitude et au dsespoir puis rgnr et instruit par un compagnon de captivit, l'abb Faria, il russit s'vader et prend possession d'un trsor cach dans l'le de Monte-Cristo et dont l'abb, avant de mourir, lui avait signal l'existence. Riche et puissant dsormais, Dants se fait passer pour le comte de Monte-Cristo et entreprend mthodiquement de se venger de ceux qui l'ont accus tort et fait emprisonner. Ce roman est, avec Les Trois mousquetaires, l'une des oeuvres les plus connues de l'crivain tant en France qu' l'tranger. Il a d'abord t publi en feuilleton dans le Journal des dbats du 28 aot au 19 octobre 1844 (1re partie), du 31 octobre au 26 novembre 1844 (2e partie), puis finalement du 20 juin 1845 au 15 janvier 1846 (3e partie).We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection.
