Welcome to this evening’s special performance of Israel Galván, a master of contemporary flamenco. I’ve had the great fortune of seeing a number of Israel’s works in various cities, and I’m thrilled that we were able to bring La Edad de Oro (The Golden Age) for his first Ottawa appearance. Israel has been hailed as a genius and with good reason: his unique flamenco choreography reveals intricate and complicated rhythms and gestures that are ground-breaking in their approach. Together with musicians David and Alfredo Lagos, Galván has created a dynamic and virtuosic performance that is both bravura and intimate. While our program for next season has now been announced, I invite you to continue delving into performances on offer over the coming months as NAC Dance continues to feature compelling and engaging works from both established and new dance makers. Bienvenue à ce spectacle extraordinaire d’Israel Galván, grand maître du flamenco contemporain. J’ai eu la chance d’assister à plusieurs spectacles d’Israel dans diverses villes et je suis très heureuse que nous puissions présenter La Edad de Oro (L’Âge d’or) à l’occasion de la première venue de son créateur à Ottawa. Ce n’est pas par hasard qu’Israel a été qualifié de génie : sa chorégraphie flamenca fait appel à des rythmes et des gestes complexes et d’avant-garde. Accompagné par les musiciens David et Alfredo Lagos, Israel Galván propose un spectacle dynamique et virtuose qui est à la fois intime et plein de bravoure. About The Work / À propos de l’œuvre In flamenco, as in all the arts, historians, specialists, and critics define certain periods of the art form as La Edad de Oro (The Golden Age). The so-called Golden Age of Flamenco began at the end of the 19th century and flourished until the 1930s. This Golden Age referred only to song and dance; the use of the guitar as an integral part of flamenco was to come much later. If this definition of a Golden Age is accepted, no contemporary singer or dancer today, with rare exceptions, would be able to equal the quality, purity, and creativity of those who performed flamenco when it was at its peak. Since then, it is implied, there has been a steady decline in the formal model of Golden Age flamenco, a litany of impoverishment, simplification, cross-cultural fusions and dilutions, as well as a loss of the content, sense, and spirit which bring this art form to life. Israel Galván defies such limited thinking, along with his fellow artists, singer David Lagos (who treasures the songs of the past) and guitarist Alfredo Lagos. These musical brothers hail from Jerez, flamenco’s native land. Galván rejects the concept of an ‘Age’, emphasizing instead the ‘Gold’ – presentday gold appearing before our very eyes, delighting our senses. With La Edad de Oro, the bailaor (flamenco dancer) from Seville retraces the roots of flamenco, but with his own brilliant contemporary treatment. A good guitarist and a good cantaor (singer) are the only additional ingredients required. Alfredo Lagos, David Lagos, and Israel Galván – guitar, vocals and dance – embody the three cornerstones of flamenco, bringing a traditional art form to vibrant 21st century life. Israel Galván defies those who may have considered him un bicho raro (an eccentric),

Dans le flamenco, comme dans tous les autres arts, historiens, spécialistes et critiques ont progressivement défini des périodes de référence. Celle qu’ils ont appelée La Edad de Oro, « l’Âge d’or » du flamenco, correspond à une tranche allant de la fin du XIXe siècle aux années 1930. Cet âge d’or fait surtout référence au chant et à la danse, la guitare flamenca ne prenant son véritable essor que beaucoup plus tardivement. Selon cette définition, aucun chanteur ou danseur d’aujourd’hui, sauf cas exceptionnel, ne serait à même d’égaler en qualité, en pureté et en créativité, ceux qui, en portant le flamenco à son apogée, ont marqué cet âge d’or. Il y aurait, depuis lors, déclin des canons formels de l’art flamenco tels qu’établis à l’époque, appauvrissement, simplification, métissages et fusions mais aussi perte des contenus, du sens, et de l’esprit qui animait cet art. Israël Galván réfute cette vision étroite, appuyé en cela par le chanteur David Lagos (qui adore les chants anciens) et le guitariste Alfredo Lagos, deux frères originaires de Jerez, berceau du flamenco. Galván rejette la notion d’âge et privilégie l’or, un or du temps présent, là juste sous nos yeux, devant nos sens. Dans La Edad de Oro, le bailaor (danseur flamenco) de Séville renoue avec les racines du flamenco, mais dans le brillant traitement contemporain qui lui est propre. Les seuls ingrédients supplémentaires requis sont un bon guitariste et un bon cantaor (chanteur). Alfredo Lagos, David Lagos et Israel Galván – guitare, chant et danse – sont les trois piliers du flamenco, transformant cette forme d’art traditionnel en une danse éclatante et digne du XXIe siècle. a curious creature breaking away from a traditional genre. Galván maintains flamenco at its artistic peak, vividly disproving the notion that “it was better before, during the golden age”, a mythical, influential bygone era of superior artistic standards. Israel Galván creates a Golden Age for today, with his dancing ushering in a new era, much like the one portrayed in Luis Buñuel’s groundbreaking 1930 movie L’Age d’or. Since its creation, Israel Galván’s La Edad de Oro has been performed more than two hundred times all over the world.

A Word From The Artistic Director / Mot du directeur artistique From all definitions of this mythical age which was ‘The Golden Age’, those who best suit our protagonists are the following. When we talk of ‘The Golden Age’ as a mythological time in which death finds it is locked in, denied the possibility of doing its work, we recall without doubt the guitar of Alfredo Lagos. Death was there while the world lived in peace, love and concordance. Death was there, prevented from acting. We listen to the seguiriyas (flamenco music) of Alfredo Lagos like a canto to this ‘Golden Age’. When we talk of ‘The Golden Age’ – a time past that was the best, a Golden Age that little by little became the reference point and artistic model – we find ourselves in an artistic conversation with David Lagos. We must dive back into the 1950’s and 60’s among the recordings that Jose Manuel Caballero Bonald produced for the ‘Archivo del cante flamenco’ archives from the Vergara label and Rito y geografía del cante, a TV series by Mario Gómez and Jose María Velázquez. We talk of Tío Gregorio Borrico, Juan Talega, Manuel Agujetas, Manuel Soto “Sordera”, Perrate, Tia Anica la Piriñaca, and, of course, of Terremoto de Jerez. Each singer, each way of hearing the cante flamenco, has its Golden Age, its genealogy. It is merely by chance that we have such audio recordings and films. When we talk of ‘The Golden Age’ as a new time, corresponding to that of the namesake film by Luis Buñuel (a bloody portrait of the bourgeoisie in the form of a tale, a psycho-pathological, quasidocumentary on the pains of his time, on the violence that his time embodies), while the claps of the feet of Israel Galván mark the hours, we talk of a foreign time, even though nobody is able to appreciate it in its classical technique, with an arm always escaping at an

De toutes les définitions existantes de ce temps mythique que fut « l’Âge d’or », celles qui conviennent le mieux à nos protagonistes sont les suivantes : quand nous parlons de « l’Âge d’or », comme d’un temps mythologique dans lequel la mort se trouvait enfermée, niée dans la possibilité de faire son travail, nous nous souvenons sans doute de la guitare d’Alfredo Lagos. La mort était là tandis que le monde vivait en paix, amour et concorde, la mort était là, empêchée d’agir. angle. The floor designs itself under the shoe, the balance on the point of being lost. And we see the body almost falling, lying full-length on the floor. Jesus Christ and the Marquis de Sade cohabit in a duet embodied by the dance of Israel Galván. Gold is transformed into rust to then be able to shine anew in all its golden splendour. We talk of the dance of Israel Galván not as one of the new times but as updating new aspects of dance which originates from the end of time. The hidden face or better yet, the whole face of a dance which itself wants to be classical and which only now, with Israel Galván, reveals itself in all its true and baroque splendor. Let’s remember the scene in the film L’Age d’or in which a child won’t stop playing in the fields until his father, the guardian of the farm, exasperated by the disobedience of his son, points his gun at him and shoots him. Let’s remember the fall of the child, fatally injured in the immense field. See this scene in slow motion. Each movement, each gesture is repeated in this ‘Golden Age’ for Israel Galván. But all of these references are underground. We mustn’t lose sight of them, but they are concealed, or rather eclipsed. That which shines on the scene is a reference to time, yes, to a complex time of the marriage between the guitar, singing and dance. Simply this. A game of time in a session of classical, luminous and resplendent techniques. A guitar, the throat of David Lagos, and the feet of Israel Galván. But one mustn’t lose sight of the shadows. ‘The Golden Age’ has always been a time of mirages and illusions.

les heures, il s’agit d’un temps étranger, bien que personne ne puisse l’apprécier dans sa facture classique : il y a toujours un bras qui s’échappe, le sol qui se dessine sous la chaussure, l’équilibre est sur le point de se rompre et l’on voit le corps en train de tomber, étendu sur le sol. Il est vrai qu’ici cohabitent Jésus-Christ et le marquis de Sade, dans un pas de deux que la danse d’Israel Galván incarne. Il est vrai qu’ici l’or se mue en rouille pour recommencer à briller ensuite de toute sa splendeur dorée. Nous parlons de la danse d’Israel Galván non comme d’un nouveau temps, mais comme la découverte de nouveaux aspects de la danse qui proviennent de la nuit des temps. La face cachée, ou mieux encore, le visage complet d’une danse qui se veut classique et qui seulement à présent, avec Israel Galván, se révèle dans toute sa splendeur, véritable et baroque. Souvenez-vous de la scène du film L’Âge d’or dans lequel un enfant ne cesse de jouer dans les champs jusqu’à ce que son père, le gardien de la ferme, excédé par la désobéissance de son fils, le mette en joue avec son fusil et lui tire dessus. Souvenezvous de la chute de l’enfant blessé à mort dans l’immense champ. Essayez à présent de visualiser la scène au ralenti. Chaque mouvement, chaque geste est répété dans cet « âge d’or » pour Israel Galván. Mais toutes ces références sont enfouies. Nous ne devons pas les perdre de vue, mais elles sont occultées, ou plutôt éclipsées. Ce qui brille sur scène est une référence au temps, oui, aux temps complexes où se marient la guitare, le chant et la danse flamenca. Simplement cela. Un jeu de temporalités dans une prestation de facture classique, lumineuse, resplendissante. Une guitare, la voix de David Lagos et les pieds d’Israel Galván. Mais il ne faut pas perdre de vue les ombres, « l’Âge d’or » a toujours été une époque fertile en mirages et illusions de toutes sortes.

Israel Galván has been called “revolutionary,” “avant-garde,” and simply “a genius.” Known for complex and rapid-fire footwork punctuated by moments of stillness and silence, Galván dances flamenco on the cutting edge. Israel Galván was born into flamenco in 1973. His father José Galván is a dancer and heads a well-known dance academy in Seville, and his mother is the dancer Eugenia de los Reyes. His sister is the celebrated young dancer Pastora Galván. Although he grew up dancing with his parents, he was 18 when he decided to become a professional dancer. He joined the Compañía Andaluza de Danza, directed by Mario Maya, in 1994, and over the next decade won just about every top flamenco prize possible, including the Giraldillo prize at Seville’s flamenco biennial, the Flamenco Hoy critics’ award for best dancer of the year in both 2001 and 2005, and Spain’s National Dance Prize (2008). Israel Galván left the company to pursue his own direction, creating ten pieces between 1998 and 2012 that define “before and after” in flamenco dance history. His works include Mira! / Los Zapatos Rojos, La Metamorfosis, Galvánicas, Dos Hermanos, Arena, La Edad de Oro, Tabula Rasa, La Francesa, Solo Flamenco, El Final de Este Estado de Cosas Redux, La Curva, and Lo Real/Le Réel/The Real. In each work, Israel Galván collaborates with classic flamenco artists and contemporary flamenco innovators and musicians.

Israel Galván a été qualifié de « révolutionnaire », de « danseur d’avant-garde » et tout simplement de « génie ». Connu pour son époustouflant jeu de jambes ponctué par des moments de calme et de silence, il danse le flamenco comme nul autre avant lui. Né en 1973, Israel Galván baigne dans le flamenco depuis son enfance. Son père José Galván est un danseur qui dirige une académie de danse bien connue à Séville, et sa mère est la danseuse Eugenia de los Reyes. Sa sœur Pastora Galván est une jeune danseuse célèbre. Bien qu’il ait dansé avec ses parents depuis son enfance, c’est seulement à 18 ans qu’il a décidé de devenir danseur professionnel.
