Offense Know Your Team Before you can plan on unlocking shoes, outfits, and courts, you must know what each member of your team can and cannot do well. This may sound obvious, but new players easily overlook that once they begin playing. If you have a guard who can shoot and pass the ball well, consider using him as your main ball handler (point guard). Your big man (or men), unlike your guard, is likely not a great shooter, so keep him/her closer to the basket, ready for the quick pass for a dunk or ready to grab a rebound. If you have the option to choose the make-up of your team, go for a balanced team. Look at the vitals for each of the players available and try to get a solid team. You need to cover all of your bases... the best teams aren’t great in just one aspect of the game. Go For Two! One of the many differences between street ball and the NBA is the long-range shot. In NBA Street Homecourt, these shots only count for two points, but don’t ignore these shots when they’re permitted in the game type you’re playing. The shooting mechanics in the game are the same as most other NBA titles. If you are familiar with EA’s NBA Live, you should find the shooting system to be very comfortable. Once you are at the top of your jump, release the ball, and you’ll have a higher chance of making the shot.

The arcade style of basketball poses a problem for making long-range shots. Defenders can jump up into the air like a rocket, making your shots vulnerable to blocks. To combat this, you need to time your shots right. You need to either make sure no defensive player is between you and the hoop or use a shot-fake, causing the defensive player to jump up. When he’s coming down from his block attempt, jump up and take your shot. Practice Electronic Arts included a practice mode for a very good reason. If you’re new to the series, get comfortable with the shooting and tricks systems in the game. It’s better to get comfortable now than get made a fool of in a game against a friend or stranger in Xbox Live, for instance.

Take it to the Hole Unlike standard simulation basketball games, you don’t have to try and dribble around players to get to the hoop. Here, you can literally sky right over defenders. Therefore, dunks are considered high-percentage shots, so go crazy. You will, however, have to get accustomed to the buttons. Use the practice mode to become comfortable and school your opponents afterwards. Just remember: don’t hold the dunk button too long or you’ll be picking pieces of the court out of your teeth.

Pass the Ball You may find it exciting to have the fastest guy on the court pull off the sickest dunks around, but if you want to win consistently, you will need to share the ball. Passing keeps the defense on their toes and allows you to create opportunities to score. If you see a player flying through the air without the ball, throw the man the ball for Pete sake. Alley-oops are a blast! Tricks The game is loaded with spectacular tricks for you to pull off. Any decent baller can shoot and dunk, but only the greats can pull off great tricks at ease. Tricks not only serve as an exciting way to make your opponent look bad, but if you make your shot after performing said tricks, you will get closer to enabling the Gamebreaker.

Gamebreaker As you perform your tricks and score points, you will increase your Gamebreaker meter until it’s completely full. When this happens, approach the highlighted circle at mid-court and enable the Gamebreaker feature. Which button needed will depend on which game system you’re using, of course. Gamebreakers can truly be difference-makers depending on the game situation. If you are behind on the scoreboard, a Gamebreaker can help you either close the gap or even take the lead. If you’re already leading, a Gamebreaker could open up a bigger lead, possibly putting the game out of reach for your opponent. String together several tricks with each of your players and score.

Defense Know Your Players As with offense, you should be aware of what each of your teammates can and cannot do well. Hopefully, you have a balanced team (steals, blocks, and rebounds). Whoever is great with steals, keep him on the guy with the ball and keep your bigger players near the rim to protect it from shots. Go for the Steal! Just because one or two players on your opponent’s team is doing most of the ball handling, it doesn’t mean they have great ball handling skills. In fact, many players have rather weak handling skills. The primary ball handler tends to stay away from the rim and closer to mid-court, pulling off trick after trick to help pump up the Gamebreaker meter. Use a player who has solid stealing skills and cover the man with the ball. Quick hands can result in you getting several strips in a game. Steals can also often result in a fast break and a quick score.

Get That Out Of Here You may not be able to steal the ball ever time your opponent has possession of the ball. Instead, control a big man close to the rim and get ready to block anything that comes near it. A tall player, controlled by someone with good timing can block a lot of shots, particularly shots which aren’t dunks. Like a steal, a blocked shot can result in a fast break and a quick score.

Kill His Gamebreaker Killing your opponent’s Gamebreaker can not only be demoralizing to the opponent, but it can offer a great opportunity to score some points. Blocking dunks on a Gamebreaker is nearly impossible, so either try for a steal when the opponent’s point guard is showing off his handling skills or force the to take a long range shot, which is much easier to block. Getting control of the ball will wipe out their Gamebreaker meter and will get you a point or two when you score.

The Homecourt Challenge is really the heart of what NBA Street Homecourt is all about. Every NBA player grew up playing on a court somewhere. It may have been an indoor gym or an outdoor court. Whatever the situation, the NBA stars they’ve turned into has put these courts on the map. In Homecourt Challenge, this is your challenge as well. You have to take your homecourt and make it as famous as possible. Doing so will not be easy, but with the help of IGN Guides, it’ll be easier. As soon as you begin the Homecourt Challenge, you will need to choose a baller to play as. Your first choice is style (position): guard, forward, or center. Each position will have six ballers to choose from. In our demonstration for how a trip through the challenge could go, we are choosing Mike Hamilton, who is a guard. He’s fast on his feet, has decent stealing skills, but his shooting is rather poor. Next, change his face and his name if you so choose. Next, choose two teammates. We needed help on the boards, so we went with Alonzo Green and Conrad White.

Game Types As you play through the hundreds of games in Homecourt Challenge, you’ll run into several types of games. Each will vary in the number of points needed to win. In each section, we’ll break down each type of match. PLAY to (#) // This is a standard pick-up game of basketball. You can dunk, shoot, and the Gamebreaker is

active. There’s nothing special about this sort of game. You play until someone reaches the number of points indicated at the start of the game (also shown if you pause the game). DUNKS ONLY to (#) // In this game type, only dunks count on the scoreboard. You can shoot all you want from

beyond the arc, they won’t count, so get up close to the rim and slam it home! You play until someone reaches the number of points indicated at the start of the game. SHOTS ONLY to (#) // This is just the opposite of the Dunks Only style. This time around, only shots count. Lay-

ups, oddly enough, are considered neither a shot nor a dunk, so if you almost dunk the ball, pass it to someone instead for a shot. You play until someone reaches the number of points indicated at the start of the game. GAMEBREAKER BATTLE to (#) // Like the Play To style, any basket made will count, but it only counts in your

Gamebreaker meter, not on the scoreboard. Pull off as many tricks as you can to boost that meter. When it’s full, trigger a Gamebreaker and score points. You play until someone reaches the number of points indicated at the start of the game. LEAD by (#) // Any basket made will count towards your score. You can generally win these quickly if you have

a player who has quick hands and can steal the ball. 01

You can ignore him for the time being and focus on the others that stop by and challenge you to games. As you defeat challengers, they will become recruitable. When you’ve defeated all of the challengers except for Carmelo Anthony, accept his challenge. You will now be leaving this court and dropping by his homecourt of Cloverdale. A victory here will give you some nice respect points, a new pair of optional shoes, and access to Cloverdale challengers in the future. Emeka Okafur and Joe Johnson are two players we recruited for our demo team. Johnson is a good shooter, while Okafur is a monster on the boards. These acquisitions will really help out our team. When you’re ready to leave this court, accept Rip Hamilton’s challenge. Tournament 1 Rip Hamilton’s challenge is a unique one. You are invited to play at Ash Park, Hamilton’s home court, in a tournament. You will take on three teams in a single-elimination tournament. The games are of the basic “Play to 21" variety. Winning the games will give you a lot of respect points, unlocks the court, and a new outfit. Homecourt Revisit Your tournament victory brings you back to your home court. Ballers you have beaten in the past will show up to challenge you on your own turf. Unfortunately, you only receive 100 RP for defeating each challenger. We don’t recommend passing up this opportunity to improve on your skills. Although you don’t get much of a reward as far as respect points, continuing to work on your skills (handles, shooting, dunking, etc) will still improve those vital stats of yours. The number of challengers seems to go on forever, so we won’t be offering a comprehensive list of them here. When you’re ready to leave your home court, accept Juwan Howard’s challenge. It’s a “Shots Only to 15" game and you’ll be returning to Franklin Park. Franklin Park Revisit With Juwan Howard defeated, you’ll find yourself back at Franklin Park to take on another round of challengers.

Carmelo Anthony

20

Once you clean the floor of competitors with the exception of Carmelo Anthony, accept his challenge. This challenge will be held at your Homecourt Gym. Winning this will give you a million respect points, unlocks the Homecourt Gym, and unlocks all of the remaining outfits and shoes. Congratulations!

Q&A Q :: Who is the best player in the game?

A :: There isn’t a single individual who is better than everyone else. In most sports games, each player is given an overall rating. The same is true with NBA Street Homecourt, but since the ratings are 1-20 and not 1-100, many players have the same overall rating. There are several level twenty players. They include the following: Kevin Garnett, Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady, LeBron James, and Dwayne Wade. Q :: Is Michael Jordan in the game?

A :: Although his namesake is used for outfits (clothing), shoes, and a gym, Michael Jordan is not a playable character in the game. Q :: How about other NBA legends? Are they in the game?

A :: No. As with Michael Jordan, there are no legends in the game. The only players in the game are active players in the actual NBA/WNBA. Q :: Do you have a recommendation for where I should use my Freak and Master Skills on the Homecourt Challenge?

A :: For those of you who don’t know about these, these skills are available at different levels in the Homecourt Challenge. As you level up, you are given the option to enable a Freak Skill and a Master Skill. They both max out one of your skills (shooting, dunking, handling, etc). They’re quite useful. For the Freak Skill, we recommend using it on a skill that your player isn’t very good at but don’t get much practice with. For example, your player may be a terrible shooter and because of it, you don’t bother to shoot with him, knowing the odds are against him having any success. In this instance, we recommend using it for that ability. As for your Master Skill, we would recommend something on defense if you used your Freak Skill on an offensive skill. Try to keep your player balanced in this respect.
