Interviewer: At 39, Kichard, you are an IT manager for a pharmaceutical company and you seem to have a near perfect work/life balance. Richard Barton-Wood: Yes. I'm very satisfied with my present situation. My office is half an hour's drive from my home near Winchester. I finish at 4 pm each day, which allows me to be sitting at home with a cup of tea by late afternoon with my wife Samantha... Interviewer: But after working nine and a half years with the same company you've been offered a new job... Richard Barton-Wood: Yes, it's fantastic. It offers fresh challenges and exciting opportunities, but the work-life balance will be different. My commuting time will be doubled. I will be expected to work longer hours and will only be free on weekends. I applied for the position, so I accept that I am ready for change. But I wonder if there are steps that I can take to prevent losing too much of the balance I currently have. Interviewer: So what do you intend to do? Richard Barton Wood: I have started to develop a negotiating strategy for flexible working hours. I could put in longer days and have Friday afternoons off once or twice a month. Another option would be t o go in to work early in the morning so I could leave ahead of the heavy afternoon traffic.
