Infront declines to take up its Bundesliga option Zug, Switzerland, 31 December 2003 -- Infront Sports & Media has decided not to exercise its option to renew its contract with the Bundesliga, the German Football League, after the present contract expires in 2004. Infront handles the distribution of Bundesliga broadcast rights worldwide. The contractual option, which rests with Infront Buli GmbH, would have given Infront a centralised rights package covering the Bundesliga for two further seasons (2004/2005 and 2005/2006). After an EU ruling which limited the overall rights package, by requiring the Bundesliga to assign certain media rights back to the clubs, it proved impossible to reach an agreement on an adjusted rights fee for the remaining package prior to the option deadline. The original option – which had fixed rates – could thus not be exercised. Infront's CEO Oscar Frei: "Under the circumstances, which are beyond our control, we have made the DFL what is an attractive financial offer, which would have provided it with substantial financial guarantees and security, allowing the league and the clubs to plan ahead". "We will continue to work closely with the League throughout our remaining season 2003/2004. However, looking forward, a partnership with significant financial obligations is only possible if both parties can benefit and the basis of the deal is solid and healthy. Despite the decision to not exercise the option, Infront expects to continue discussions with the League as they seek to find a satisfactory solution concerning the future television distribution plan."
