Information letter on on-campus recycling and waste management

Thanks to Hecosystème’s collaboration with the General Utilities Department, a mixed recycling collection service has already started on the HEC campus and its implementation will continue in stages. 1. Beginning of December, new double-compartment waste bins were placed in all administration offices. They should soon arrive in the classrooms. These “two in one” waste bins have one large compartment for recyclable waste (such as paper, staples, cardboard…) and another compartment for non-recyclable waste. 2. Mid-December, containers for glass were placed at the bottom of each building. 3. Last of all, waste bins for the students’ rooms should arrive in January. Everyone will then have two waste bins, kindly provided by the administration. One will be blue, for recyclable waste; the other one will be burgundy, for all other, non-recyclable waste. You will have to use these waste bins, and not your own waste bin nor the one previously provided by the residence (which should be removed when the new ones arrive), so that the cleaning ladies can recognise the “colour code” when they empty the waste bins.

And now, a few guidelines on how to recycle properly (these guidelines will also be sent to you by mail):

HOW TO SORT GLASS ON THE CAMPUS: Glass containers have recently been placed at the bottom of each building. You can dispose of all your glass containers (bottles, pots, jars…) in them. Please do not put dirty glass in them (e.g. Nutella jars, which have to be rinsed out beforehand). It is not necessary to remove the paper labels which burn when the glass is melted at 1500°C. However, no caps, metal foils or stoppers should be disposed of along with the glass. WATCH OUT! Some materials seem close to glass, but are not recyclable: - light bulbs, neon light bulbs and halogens - tableware (e.g. pyrex), chinaware and ceramics (enemy n° 1 of glass recycling!!) - mirrors and window panes

NO CERAMICS, NOR CHINAWARE, NOR TERRACOTTA, NOR EARTHENWARE, NOR WINDOW PANES, NOR PLASTIC BOTTLES IN THESE CONTAINERS.

Of course, it is essential to throw no other material in these containers. We are counting on your good citizenship! ;-)

HOW TO SORT WASTE IN YOUR ROOM: RECYCLABLE WASTE NON-RECYCLABLE WASTE BLUE WASTE BIN BURGUNDY WASTE BIN The organisation of this waste management This waste bin is for all common industrial programme is to be simple. Therefore, one waste, i.e. what has not been mentioned opposite waste bin will take all of the following recyclable and mainly: products: 1. THIN PLASTIC: plastic drink cups, plastic bags, plastic packaging around packs 1. PAPER/CARDBOARD: sheets of paper, newspapers, magazines, envelopes (even window of bottles… Indeed, when plastic is too envelopes!), cardboard files, colour paper… thin, it cannot be recycled. 2.

METALS: paperclips, drawing-pins, staples (so no need to remove staples from magazines before throwing them away!)

2. DIRTY PACKAGING: pizza boxes, food cans (unless they are rinsed out beforehand!)…

3.

ALUMINIUM and STEEL PACKAGING: drink cans, aerosols, tins, food cans (once rinsed out), bottle caps…

3. FOOD WASTE: teabags, apple cores, crisps, cakes, sandwiches…

4.

PAPER and CARDBOARD PACKAGING: pieces of cardboard, cardboard boxes, cardboard food packaging (e.g. for milk, yoghurts, etc.), teabag boxes, drink cartons…

4. OTHER: pens, fabric… 5. If you are not sure about a type of waste, please throw it in the red waste bin.

!!! NOT pizza boxes (too greasy) 5.

PLASTIC PACKAGING: drink bottles, household product bottles (well rinsed out!), stoppers…

GOLDEN RULE: “IF IN DOUBT, DON’T”: IF YOU ARE NOT 100% SURE SOMETHING IS RECYCLABLE, PLEASE PUT IT IN THE RED WASTE BIN. CONCLUSION: We have tried to make this programme as easy to implement as possible, so that it is not too tedious: 2 different and easily recognisable types of waste and 2 different waste bins, depending on what you wish to throw away.

We are counting on you!

The HECosystème members, who thank you for your cooperation.
