General description of the school

The école régionale des beaux-arts de Caen was founded in 1795 following the creation of the Ecoles Centrales. Over the years, the structure of this school has evolved to become what is now a higher education institution in plastic arts. The school is a department of the Communauté d’agglomération de Caen la mer (urban community of Caen la mer) and placed under the educational supervision of the French Ministry for culture and communication. An architectural project is currently in the design stages with a view to creating a new building to house all of the school’s workshops – at present spread over four sites. The Communauté d’agglomération de Caen la mer provides 82.71% of the department’s budget expenses. The Direction Régionale des Affaires Culturelles (Regional Department of Cultural Affairs), under the French Ministry for culture and communication, subsidises up to 10.80% of the school’s activities, and the Conseil général du Calvados (Calvados County Council) up to 1.99%. 5.04% comes from income earned by the institution’s activities.

Organisation of studies – course options The école régionale des beaux-arts de Caen la mer offers three different courses: the short cycle Graphic Design option and the long cycle Art and Communication (art and media) options. First-year foundation course Semesters 1 and 2 form the first year that is followed by all students, in the short and long cycles. Work is assessed through continuous assessment, an exhibition of students’ work at the end of the first semester, and an end-of-year exam involving: - a presentation of a selection of the students’ most significant work from the year, with their comments. - a document compiling the students’ artistic references and their personal creative work. This common-core syllabus includes lectures on aesthetics, history of art and the history of techniques as well as regular practice of various modes of expression in workshop sessions. Teaching, including viewings of art work and meetings with artists, is supplemented by the beginnings of a personal piece of work by each student and by participation in conferences organised by the school and its partners, in exhibition visits and trips. SHORT CYCLE – Graphic Design Semesters 3, 4, 5 and 6 continue the short-cycle study programme, leading to preparation for the Diplôme National d’Arts et Techniques Design Graphique (D.N.A.T. - national diploma of arts and graphic design techniques) Students aim to gain familiarity with tools and practise graphic design techniques through the two-dimensional processing of orders and projects involving texts and images. If students meet the required conditions, the school grants the Certificat d’Etudes d’Arts Plastiques (C.E.A.P – certificate of plastic arts studies) at the end of the sixth semester. During these two years (following the first-year foundation course), students acquire theoretical, aesthetic and technical knowledge and learn a work methodology so as to organise and develop a project through workshop sessions and placements in a professional environment (3 months over the two years). The last semester in the third year is particularly devoted to preparing a personal diploma project that will be presented during the D.N.A.T. examinations. The short-cycle study programme is taught through: - lectures, which, in 2004-2005 for example, covered: the history of advertising through changing poster styles (1850-1945), alternative publishing and graphic arts today, techniques and issues of graphic design, templates and page layouts, the anatomy of the letter, typography and page layout, the history and techniques of photography, a study of video composition, the English language, etc. - preparatory workshops: 3D computer graphics, videography, photography, art prints, computer graphics. - research and creation workshops, which, in 2004-2005 for example, looked into: typography, the anatomy of characters, the creation of characters; from linear to interactive animation; the creation of fixed 3D images, etc. LONG CYCLES – Diplôme National d’Arts Plastiques/Diplôme National Supérieur d’Expression Plastique The long-cycle study programme prepares for the Diplôme National d’Arts Plastiques (D.N.A.P – national diploma of plastic arts) over six semesters, and the Diplôme National Supérieur d’Expression Plastique (D.N.S.E.P. – national higher diploma of expression through plastic arts) over ten semesters. The long-cycle study programmes involve two stages: the Programme phase and the Project phase. - Semesters 3, 4, 5 and 6 teach the Programme phase. Teaching is given through classes, preparatory workshops, practical work in workshops and personal research. Students enrolled in the long cycle choose one of the two options, Art or Communication (arts and media) at the end of the second year (sixth semester). The chosen option will form the student’s main study programme. If students meet the required conditions, they obtain the C.E.A.P. at 4

the end of the fourth semester. - Semesters 7, 8, 9 and 10 make up the Project phase of the Art and Communication (arts and media) options, which is a comprehensive study programme leading to the D.N.S.E.P and involving students in their own personal research. Teaching is focused on acquiring a research methodology through research and creation workshops, classes, professional placements and, above all, personal research. Students’ work, based essentially on experience, must enable them to develop their research aptitude and creative and conceptual faculties so as to assert their own personal expression. If students meet the required conditions, they obtain the Certificat d’Etudes Supérieures d’Arts Plastiques (C.E.S.A.P.- higher certificate of plastic arts studies) at the end of the eighth semester. The long-cycle study programme is taught through: - lectures, mainly on history of art and aesthetics. By way of an example, the 2004-2005 course covers: aesthetics, new media in art and communication; a workshop on writing and arts today; post-modernism/contemporary art; lessons in the English language. - preparatory workshops (part of the Programme phase), representing a necessary introduction to how to use tools; for example, an Internet laboratory, videography, digital technology, 3D computer graphics, traditional and experimental animation, art prints, word, iron, moulding, clay-ceramics, resin, painting and paper-materials. - workshops aiming to give students greater familiarity with tools and the opportunity to complete their projects, - research and creation workshops that encourage thinking, theorisation and art-related research on a theme. Art The Art option study programme encourages students to research and develop a personal project which fits into the context of contemporary art. It aims to train artists and visual creators in fields such as painting, sculpture, photography, videography and new fields of contemporary art. Communication (arts and media) The Communication option study programme engages students in personal and socio-cultural research that is based on practical work with numerous tools of artistic writing. Teaching encourages personal involvement that is essential in seeking and mediating a view of the world. The professional work of lecturers involves a wide range of activities. Students help to define the parameters of the Communication (arts and media) option, the aim of which is to create a particular way of seeing the world and to encourage experimentation with these translations.

The diplomas The study programmes leading to the D.N.A.T., D.N.A.P. and D.N.S.E.P. are organised in accordance with the terms of the J.O. decree of 06.03.97. Approval of diplomas The D.N.A.P. and D.N.A.T, issued at Bac+3 (after three years of university study) allow students to apply for the Certificat d’Aptitude au Professorat de l’Enseignement du Second degré (C.A.P.E.S – secondary or high school teaching diploma) and the Certificat d’Aptitude au Professorat de l’Enseignement Technique (C.A.P.E.T – technical teaching diploma), in the same way as a degree. (level III approved diplomas) In the same way, the D.N.S.E.P., issued at Bac+5 (after five-years of university study), allows students to apply for the agrégation (highest competitive examination for teachers in France) in plastic arts, in the same as a Masters in plastic arts. (diploma is approved at level II) The D.N.S.E.P. awards graduates a mastaire (masters), a new level at bac+5 in addition to the three levels that have existed up until now: the baccalauréat (equivalent to British ‘A’ levels), degree and PhD. This level, recognised in Europe as the result of 5 years of study in higher education, opens up new opportunities of mobility and integration for students.

International relations office

The person responsable for international relations deals with the management and administration of the school's involvement in European-funded projects and study abroad programmes. She also advises and assists teaching staff and students to choose suitable partner or host institutions. The school maintains relations with partner institutions abroad and initiates new links and projects in Europe and other parts of the world. The Office is open all year round, except when the school is closed : on public holidays, during the Christmas, Winter; Spring holidays and from the 1 st to the 31st August.  Assessment and acreditation at the école régionale des beaux-arts de Caen la mer Assessment procedures

The criteria used to assess each module or project may vary from course to course. The exact criteria is specified in the course description sheets. Students all receive a record of their achievements (note sheet), which may also include relevant remarks about work produced and learning achieved. Acreditation - What is the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System)? Introduction The European Community encourages inter-university cooperation with the aim of improving the quality of education for the benefit of students and higher education institutions, while considering student mobility as a key element of this cooperation. Studying abroad is a particularly enriching experience, since it offers a better way of learning about other countries, other ideas, other languages and other cultures. The ECTS has been set up as a pilot project within the framework of the old ERASMUS programme, with the aim of promoting the academic recognition of studies completed abroad. It is a methodology intended to create transparency, establish the conditions necessary for bringing institutions together and widen the range of choice on offer to students. Its application by institutions makes students’ academic results easier to recognise thanks to the use of measures by everyone in the same way – “credits” and marks – and also gives a better insight into national higher education systems. The ECTS system is based on three main elements: information on students’ results and study programmes, mutual agreement (between partner institutions and students) and the use of ECTS credits (values representing the volume of work carried out by students). These three key elements are put into practice by three key documents: the fact file, the application form/course contract and student transcript. However, the key aspect of ECTS is that it is put into practice by students, lecturers and institutions themselves insofar as they would like the part of their studies completed abroad to be recognised as an integral part of their study programme. The ECTS credits represent, in the form of a numerical value awarded for each module, the volume of work that students have supposedly carried out for each module. They express the amount of work that each module requires in relation to the overall amount of work necessary for passing a full year of studies in the institution, i.e.: lectures, practical work, seminars, placements, research or surveys in the field, personal work –in the library or at home, as well as examinations or other types of assessment. The ECTS is therefore based on the overall amount of work that a student completes and is not limited exclusively to the number of hours attended. Within the framework of the ECTS, 60 credits represent one year’s work. As a general rule, 30 credits would be equivalent to one semester, and 20 credits to a third of an academic year. THE DOCUMENTS The Information Package/Course Catalogue provides students and staff with useful information about the institution, organisation and structure of the course and modules. This course catalogue also provides information for foreign students who come to study in the institution. The course contract (academic recognition of students) describes the study programme that students are to follow as well as the ECTS credits that they will acquire after meeting the required conditions (examination, assessment, etc.) With this contract, students undertake to follow the study programme abroad by considering it as an integral part of their university study; the home institution undertakes to guarantee full academic recognition of the credits obtained abroad; and lastly, the host institution undertakes to provide the agreed module units, subject to a timetable change. In the event that credits are transferred, the course contract must include an agreement between the student and both institutions concerned before the student leaves his or her home institution. The contract is signed by the three parties. It must updated immediately in the event of a change in the course after the student has arrived at the host establishment. The student transcript presents the student’s academic results (list of modules taken, credits obtained, local marks and equivalent ECTS grades) in a clear, comprehensive and understandable way for each of the parties. In the event that credits are transferred, the departing student’s transcript must be issued by the home institution before his or her departure and the arriving student’s transcript must be issued by the host institution at the end of the study period. 8

The Diploma Supplement is a document attached to a higher education diploma providing a standardised description of the nature, level, context, content and status of the studies that were successfully completed by the individual named on the original qualification to which this supplement is appended. It ensures transparency and facilitates the academic and professional recognition of qualifications (diplomas, degrees, certificates, etc.). Within the framework of an exchange, students must attend class regularly and follow the whole of the semester’s programme offered by the host institution – and not expressly designed for their purpose – and must be able to satisfy the requirements of the host institution in terms of obtaining a diploma. The use of ECTS credits guarantees the organisation of reasonable programmes in terms of volume of work for the period of study abroad. The ECTS also enables students to continue their studies abroad. This is because students may decide not to return to their host institution or may choose to go and study in a third institution. Such decisions cannot be made, however, without the agreement of the institutions themselves, who are required to fix the conditions that students must meet to obtain a diploma or transfer their application. With a compilation of all the student’s academic results, the student transcript is a particularly useful document for institutions facing such decisions. ECTS correspondence and organisation of studies of decree 88-1033 of 10 November 1988 for the 2005-2006 academic year The school establishes the ECTS in a prefiguration phase usually required to last two years (2005-2006, 2006-2007). During this period, a double validation of studies will be used. In the first year: the 60 credits obtained in semesters 1 and 2 (30 x 2) will be accumulated on an annual basis and integrated into the end-of-year assessment such as this is conducted within the organisation of studies of decree 881033 of 10 November 1988. In the second and third years: the 30 credits obtained each semester in the second and third years will be accumulated on an annual basis and be equivalent to 10 annual units of value of the Programme phase of the organisation of studies of degree 88-1033 of 10 November 1988. In the fourth and fifth years: the 30 credits obtained each semester in the fourth and fifth years will be accumulated on an annual basis and be equivalent to 6 annual units of value of the Project phase of the organisation of studies of degree 88-1033 of 10 November 1988.



Application deadlines and procedure

Participation in the exchange programme by students at the Ecole régionale des beaux-arts General Information Exchange students are accepted only from partner institutions with which the school has signed a co-operation agreement. Students who wish to apply for a study period at the school must submit a completed and signed application form to the international relations office of the school. Please note that we do not allow students to extend their Erasmus period, but we can accommodate fee-paying students. Fees and Transcripts You will not be expected to pay tuition fees to the school, as it is normal for exchange students to pay fees to their home institution and not their host institution. Students coming to Caen must pay: accommodation fees (rent and food) and equipment expenses involved in the students’ work, excluding chemical products and inks used in the following workshops: photography, lithography and silkscreen, etching... Please note that no applications can be accepted after the deadline dates and applications are only considered complete when all forms, portfolio and letter of intent are enclosed. We will not process applications until they are complete. Application Procedure Before starting the application procedure, you should contact your Erasmus/ Exchange coordinator at your home institution and enquire about study abroad options. If the école régionale des beaux-arts of Caen is a partner of your home institution and you have been given permission to apply for a study abroad period on one of our courses, you can do so by following the steps outlined below: Step 1: Make sure to read this Guide for Incoming Exchange Student carefully; it was written for you so make use of it. Course information and updates to Exchange student procedures can be found on the school's website. Step 2: Collect an application form and guidelines from the Erasmus/Exchange coordinator at your home institution and complete the forms. Alternatively these can be downloaded from the ‘Visiting Exchange Students’ section of the website and you can print them out. Step 3: Write a letter of motivation (maximum one A4 page) and make a portfolio and a study project (either electronic format or traditional format, maximum A4 size and no original work). The portfolio should be comprised of completed work and also recent projects (in the form of drawings, photographs, paintings, video, cd-rom, etc.). The study project is comprised of projects currently underway and your project within the specific framework of the exchange. The text featuring in your project must be written in two languages: in French and in the language spoken in the student’s home country. Step 4: Make arrangements for the completed application form (including signatures), the letter of motivation and the portfolio to be sent to: Pia Viewing, International relations, école régionale des beaux-arts de Caen la mer, 83 rue de Geôle, 14000 Caen, France Step 5: Once we receive your completed application it will be forwarded to the coordinator of your chosen course. The course leader will evaluate your work, your motivation and your knowledge of the French language and report back to the International relations office. Step 6: Application dossiers for an exchange will be examined by an internal commission and you will be notified of the outcome of your application by letter: - by the 10 June 2007 for an exchange taking place in the first semester (October 2007-February 2008) - by the end of November 2006 for an exchange taking place in the second semester (February 2007-June 2007). If successful, you will receive a confirmation letter containing various information, including start and end date, contact person details, practical information about finding accomodation, etc. The home institution should make out a study agreement specifying your course and the studies conducted during your study period in the école régionale des beaux-arts de Caen la mer. This study agreement is signed by the two institutions and the student before the student leaves his/her home institution. Amendments can be made to this contract during the study period in the école régionale des beaux-arts de Caen la mer. The students is therefore engaged in specific courses and he/she is obliged to undertake, and acheive accreditation for, these courses. Step 7: During your study period at the school you will be expected to participate with the same commitment and enthusiasm expected of any other student. If you have any problems or questions, feel free to contact Pia Viewing for advice. Step 8: Towards the end of your study period at the school, please make sure to fill in the report form you will have received with your confirmation letter. Please hand this in at the International relations office before leaving the school. 10

Step 9: At the end of your study period, the student should pass the regular examinations and will receive an accreditation sheet and notes showing the assessment of the work done and a certificate of his/her presence. The accreditation sheet must state the number of credits acquired by the student during the study period. Insurance, Passport and Visa Before leaving your home country, you are advised to make arrangements concerning health insurance while abroad. All exchange students must obtain an EHIC card (formerly E111) before they arrive in the France. The EHIC Card entitles students to receive medical treatment within the European Union on the same basis as French citizens. Visiting students from outside the European Union must check with the Department of Health in their home country regarding medical treatment in the France. Some countries have agreements with the France that allow their citizens to receive free medical treatment here. You are also strongly advised to obtain comprehensive travel insurance before leaving your home country, for the duration of your study period in France. Finally, you must ensure that you have a current passport and any other necessary travel documents or visas before undertaking their journey. Some students require ‘invitation’ letters from the école régionale des beaux-arts de Caen la mer in order to proceed through Immigration at airports, seaports, etc. If such a letter is required, you should contact Pia Viewing as soon as possible. Administrative documents During their stay in France, students must also be able to provide their original birth certificate and a translation of this into the language of the host country. Language knowledge required Applicants who are NON-EU NATIONALS To be admitted for the entrance examination, you must prove your level of French to the commission d’équivalence or the commission de mobilité at the Ecole régionale des beaux-arts de Caen by justifying that you have obtained: - a Diplôme Approfondi de la Langue Française (DALF), or - a Test de Connaissance du Français (TCF). A mark in the intermediary level (level 3), between 300 and 399 points, is the minimum requirement for admission. Details of certified centres in France and French cultural centres abroad are available on the website www.ciep.fr. Payment is required to sit this examination. The Centre International d’Etudes Pédagogiques (CIEP) organises several sessions to sit the TCF. All applications must be sent to the CIEP, 1 avenue Léon-Journault 92318 Sèvres cedex, tel. +33 (0)1 45 07 60 60. However, European nationals or citizens from countries where the final examinations at the end of secondary school studies are mostly in French, or students who have studied in a secondary school where the language of instruction was French, are exempt from these examinations. Indication must therefore be given of this institution, along with its exact address.

Arrival and registration

Upon Arrival at the University College Upon arrival, exchange students should present themselves at the reception desk of the school. They will then be welcomed by the person in charge of International relations, the director and the coordinator of the department of studies that the student is to follow. IMPORTANT ! Exchange students will all be required to produce the following documentation during their first week at the school: A valid passport or equivalent document. 4 passport-sized photographs. Student identity card from the school of origin or document certifying enrolment at the school of origin.



General information

Carte de séjour (residence permit) – compulsory for a visit lasting more than three months. European students are automatically exempt from needing this permit. It can be obtained from the Préfecture du Calvados – Centre Administratif – Rue Choron, Caen Cost of living in Caen Approximate cost of living, excluding accommodation: 250 euros / month Approximate cost of living, including accommodation: 700 euros / month Accommodation Students at the Ecole des beaux-arts can benefit from the CROUS university accommodation service (Centre Régional des Œuvres Universitaires et Scolaires) 23 avenue de Bruxelles – BP 5153, 14070 Caen cedex 05 University accommodation The CROUS has individual rooms available over the 4 campuses, directly accessible by the tram. University accommodation is essentially allocated according to social criteria. A request for university accommodation is made with a “dossier social étudiant” (student social file). [Only the request for accommodation is made to the CROUS, a grant application must be made to the school’s education department] The file can be obtained from the CROUS Service Dossier Social Etudiant - reception: from Mondays to Fridays, 1.15pm to 4pm - telephone: +33 (0)2 31 56 63 30, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, from 1.30pm to 4.30pm - email: [email protected] This file is filled out online. The deadline for submitting this file is 30 April each year. For applications made after this date, accommodation allocations will only be possible after 1 October, following withdrawals. Accommodation in the city - For students who cannot or do not want to stay in university accommodation, the CROUS has an address file which can be sent to students, in its office exclusively. You must therefore come to the “logement en ville du CROUS” (CROUS city accommodation) department with proof of your status as a student at the Caen academy. This department is open during the University’s registration period (from around 20 June to 20 July and from 25 August onwards). Insurance Any student staying in university or private accommodation must take out property insurance (fire, theft, water damage, defence and recovery, etc.). La Mutuelle des Etudiants or the SMENO offer specific insurance to affiliated students or members. During their studies, students may borrow equipment (cameras for example) for a determined period of time. An insurance certificate for risks of loss, theft or damage to the borrowed equipment must be attached to the loan statement. For a study period abroad, repatriation insurance can be taken out from Europe Assistance.

Library and documentation The library of the Ecole régionale des beaux-arts de Caen has a reference collection and resources mainly on visual arts, and more particularly on the 20th century and contemporary art. In term time, the library is freely accessible from 8am to 6.30pm Mondays to Thursdays and from 8am to 5.30pm on Fridays. The collection is composed of 14 000 works (monographs and exhibition catalogues), 480 videos, 200 DVDs, 350 Audio-CDs, 30 CD-ROMs and slides.
