NORSCQ 5 Streams [Optical Sound, www.optical-sound.com] On their third album, Norscq explore the world of human conflicts, different beliefs and overall human relations. The words heard on the album are not those of the band but of US-Pakistani director Ibrahim Quraishi. The music is pensive, while the words are a reflection on the state of today's world. From "Belly Button", we get lyrics that go something like this: "Controlling the senses, disciplining the action. I am the belly button of the world. You deny me. I'll deny you. But the moon too will deny us. I don't care. We don't care. As long as we're all the belly buttons of the world." Deep words for a band that usually stayed on the lighter side of things. All of these words are recited as soft glitches and clicks surrounding the narrator. For the most part, this is pensive music, something one can use to chill out with. It's overwhelming on the electronic side, with electricity of sitars and synths running through its core. Only exception in this department is "The Man with a Plan", which features the softest beats, string section and some underlying vocalist half-singing, half-talking, trying to peer through. Other than that, the music flows smoothly, like a river. The electronics don't try to be adventurous or other-worldly, so as not to interfere with the overall mood of the whole piece. The piece was performed live several times as part of a larger installation. It'd be interesting to see if a DVD is released of any of these performance to observe what the eyes were missing. - Tom Sekowski
