Flexible maintenance intervals - Astra-H Like the Vectra-C, the Corsa-C and the Meriva, the Astra-H has an engine oil level monitoring facility (Oil-LifeMonitoring, OLM). The monitoring function is performed by the engine control unit (ECM) and the instrument cluster assembly. ECO Service-Flex:

up to 2 years/30,000 km petrol engine (up to max. 35,000 km) up to 2 years / 50,000 km - diesel engine (with or without DPF) ECO Service 1 exception: 1 year / 30,000 km 15,000 km (1.9 diesel with DPF) Replacing the engine control unit (ECM) or the instrument cluster assembly (IPC) The essential difference between this and the "Flexible Maintenance Interval" of other car models is that the engine oil ageing parameters can be transferred via TECH 2 when the engine control unit (ECM) or the instrument cluster assembly (IPC) is replaced. This procedure must always be given preference. However, the previous procedure that was used for the Vectra-C, the Corsa-C and the Meriva can continue to be used on occasions when it is not possible to communicate with the ECM via TECH 2. TECH 2 diagnosis A distinction is made between method 1 (communication with ECM possible) and method 2 (communication with ECM not possible) in the following table. Factory programming ECO Service Flex is programmed in in the factory (service plan / checklist "Astra-H") ECO Service-Flex The new Astra-H has a flexible engine oil change interval that depends on the customer's driving profile. Under optimum driving conditions 2 years / 35,000 km is achieved with a petrol engine or 2 years / 50,000 km with a diesel engine. An algorithm calculates the driver's driving habits from the following information: l l l l l l

Distance driven Engine speed Engine torque Driving cycles Coolant temperature Oil temperature

and defines the driving distance until the next oil change is required. The length of the service interval is not affected by topping up with engine oil of an approved grade. Instrument display The customer is notified of the next engine oil change by an indicator in the odometer.

The necessity for an engine oil change, subdivided into: l l

"Remaining distance between 600 and 1500 km" (1) and "Remaining distance less than 600 km" (2)

is automatically displayed in the instrument cluster odometer for several seconds whenever the ignition is

switched on. In the range from 600 - 1500 km a fixed value of 1000 km is displayed, and in the range from 0 600 km a fixed value of 0 km is displayed. Retrieving the remaining distance Another display option is "Remaining distance to next service". The display is activated in the instrument cluster with the ignition switched off by pressing the "trip odometer" reset button on the instrument cluster. The remaining distance is displayed in the odometer in steps of 1000 km. In the worst case, under difficult operating conditions, the request for the next service engine oil interval already appears after 15 months. If the vehicle battery is disconnected, all the engine oil service interval data is saved in the EEPROM and is available when the battery is re-connected. A driver with an average driving profile drives approx. 15,000 km per annum, an infrequent driver drives less than 5000 km per annum and a short-distance driver has frequent cold starts and is comparable with an infrequent driver. Infrequent drivers and short distance drivers receive the request for the engine oil service interval after no less than 15 months. Infrequent and short-distance drivers with a petrol engine reach 6800 km after 15 months with ECO Service Flex. The Opel Astra-H is delivered with different engine oils, which are assigned to the following engines: Engine oil grade GM-LL-A-025 for all petrol engines Engine oil grade GM-LL-B-025 for all diesel engines Top up engine oil In exceptional cases the customer can use engine oil of grade ACEA-A3 or ACEA-A3 / B3. In an ideal case the engine oil viscosity should be 0W-30 or 5W-30 or greater than 30. However, 10W-30 can also be used. If more than 1 litre of engine oil grade ACEA-A3 or ACEA-A3 / B3 is added within an engine oil change interval of two years, the ECO Service Flex interval (service plan / checklist "Astra-H") can no longer be used. Service plan / checklist "G" should be used instead. ECO Service 1 Due to individual driving profiles it may be necessary to program the first service to ECO Service 1 (checklist "G"), e.g. for frequent drivers with petrol engines. A different engine oil grade may also be needed: ACEAA3/B3. The instrument cluster and the control unit must then be programmed to ECO Service 1. At each inspection it is asked in service plan / checklist "Astra-H" and "G" whether the current service plan should be retained. In service plan / checklist "Astra-H" the Astra-H has an interval of 2 years / 2 years /

30,000 km for petrol engines (up to 35,000 km is possible) and 50,000 km for diesel engines,

in service plan "G" the engine oil change interval is 1 year / 30,000 km for petrol and diesel engines. Reprogramming takes place using the instrument cluster programming facility. The fact that reprogramming has taken place must be documented in the relevant confirmation boxes in the service booklet ("Reprogramming the engine control unit / instrument cluster"), and there is also a sticker / tag for the engine compartment pointing out the change. After an engine oil change has taken place the flexible service interval is reset by the Service employee. Example of filling out the service sticker If an engine control unit or instrument cluster assembly has been replaced using method 2 (no communication with TECH 2 possible) the service sticker must be completed.

ECO Service, last service at mileage of 30,000 km on 01.05.2004. ECM replacement at mileage of 45,000 km on 20.12.2004. Sticker labelling, next service 60,000 km or 01.05.2005. ECO Service-Flex, last service at mileage of 30,000 km on 01.05.2004. ECM replacement at mileage of 45,000 km on 20.12.2004. Sticker labelling, next service 60,000 km or 01.05.2006.

The service interval indicator is not decisive during this period. Following an ECM replacement the planned ECO Service 1 or ECO Service Flex service interval does not start again until the service event documented on the sticker has occurred. Resetting the service interval with Eco Service Flex and ECO Service 1 The service interval display (time and mileage) can be reset via the instrument cluster assembly. The engine control unit is connected to the instrument cluster assembly. 1. "Ignition OFF". 2. Press and hold down Reset button (trip odometer knob), and display on instrument cluster will display the odometer and the trip odometer. 3. Press and hold down Reset button (trip odometer knob), and after approx. 3 seconds the service interval display will appear (e.g. "InSP 15,000" or "InSP 0"). 4. Keep reset button pressed and push brake pedal, holding both down. 5. "Ignition ON". Press and hold down reset button and brake pedal and "InSP - - -" appears in the display (flashing). Hold both down until the service interval display changes. 6. After approx. 10 seconds the maximum mileage ("InSP 35,000 km" for petrol engines and "InSP 50,000 km" for diesel engines with ECO Service Flex) or ("InSP 30,000 km" with ECO Service 1) is displayed. The service interval is reset. The timer in the instrument cluster is set to 24 months. The engine control unit receives a signal via the CAN bus and the "oil level" is set to 100%. Also point out to the customer that a service display that has been inadvertently reset cannot be updated again by the Opel dealer, particularly if no service booklet is available. A new engine oil change may be needed to avoid engine damage depending on the distance that has been travelled since the last engine oil change / inspection. Reprogramming to ECO Service Flex or ECO Service 1 Reprogramming takes place using TECH 2 as follows: TECH 2 diagnosis - Select IPC programming menu: Reset service interval Select country Select ECO Service Flex yes

no

ECO Service Flex mode ECO Service 1 mode The service interval is reset in the IPC and the ECM. The service interval is reset in the IPC. The remaining distance display for vehicles with "ECO Service Flex" and "ECO Service 1" can also be reset with TECH 2. However, this should not be used for normal engine oil changes for cost reasons. In this case the reset should take place using the trip odometer knob.
