ENGLISH AT ENSIEG - AN OVERVIEW During your three years at ENSIEG, you will acquire specific, practical skills that will be useful in your future career. No matter what your level, you are expected to improve in the areas of oral comprehension, reading comprehension, written expression and oral expression. You will be asked to be productive: to use actively the skills you have already acquired as you add new ones. You are expected to devote time out of class to language by taking advantage of the many possibilities offered at ENSIEG and in the city of Grenoble in general: the "libre service," foreign reviews and periodicals available at the library, films shown in "VO", the English book store, the many foreign students on campus, etc.
Each of the three years builds on the previous year's work. ➼ In the 1st year, you are asked to become a user of English (not just a consumer of English classes) • to integrate previously learned grammar and structures into written and oral production, i.e. to move on from the grammar exercise to real use • to learn to listen to and interact with other students—not just the teacher • to assume some responsibility for the acquisition of vocabulary, better reading techniques, better oral comprehension through activities outside of class—not just in-class work and homework assignments • to learn to be an efficient speaker—respecting the time allotted, always adapting the material for the ear and not the eye, thinking about phrasing, timing and articulation. • to adapt the level of English to the context: written/oral, formal/informal ➼2nd year is centered on a number of concrete tasks and more formal communication • using the OHP during a talk • preparing an efficient transparency • describing a company and its activities and one's own activities inside a company • writing a CV and a cover letter • preparing for the TOEFL test ➼The 3rd year takes the student through the process of writing a professional paper and delivering a professional presentation.
