ABSTRACT This paper presents the current knowledge on the odonate fauna of the Iglesiente (SW Sardinia). Historical data and recent investigations have resulted in a total of 28 species (11 Zygoptera and 17 Anisoptera) for this area, representing 67% of the species known from Sardinia. Additionally, new data are presented for other areas of Sardinia on the following species, considered rare and/or protected: Lestes macrostigma (Eversmann, 1836), Sympecma fusca (Van der Linden, 1820), Coenagrion scitulum (Rambur, 1842), Lindenia tetraphylla (Van der Linden, 1825), Orthetrum nitidinerve (Selys, 1841), O. trinacria (Selys, 1841) and Brachythemis impartita (Karsch, 1890).

Key words: Odonata, Lindenia tetraphylla, Brachythemis impartita, species list, Sardinia, Italy.

INTRODUCTION The Odonata fauna of Sardinia is relatively well known (eg. Bentivoglio 1905; Nielsen 1940; Bucciarelli et al. 1983; Utzeri & D'Antonio 2005) when compared with other regions of Mediterranean Italy (e.g. Sicily, Calabria). However, the last article dedicated to the Odonata from Sardinia was published 15 years ago (Utzeri & Cobolli 1996) (if one disregards the recent paper by Holuša (2008) on Trithemis kirbyi Selys, 1891), and considering the rapid evolution of the landscape due to human intervention (e.g. industrialized agriculture, tourism) as well as the recent climate change, the current knowledge of the Odonata of Sardinia is less than satisfactory, also considering that Lindenia tetraphylla (Vander Linden, 1825), a species listed in Annexes II

and IV of the Habitats Directive, seems to have here one of its strongholds in Italy. In comparison to other parts of Sardinia, the odonate fauna of the "Iglesiente" has received even less attention. The present contribution summarizes the available data and adds numerous new records (indicated as: Material examined) collected between 1992 and 2007. Additionally, records on seven species, the majority of which from outside the Iglesiente, are included because these are considered rare and/or are protected.

STUDY AREA The study area is the Iglesiente, in SW Sardinia, which is delimited by the Gulf of Oristano in the north, in 243

Sönke Hardersen, Piero Leo

the east by the Plains of Campidano and in the south by the Gulf of Gonnesa and the Plains of the Cixerri river. It covers an area of approximately 1000 km2 and includes nine municipalities: Arbus, Buggerru, Domusnovas, Fluminimaggiore, Gonnesa, Gonnosfanadiga, Guspini, Iglesias, Villacidro. The landscape is mainly hilly and mountainous, with short stretches of mountain streams and some small artificial lakes. Dune lakes and salty marshes of considerable size are not present. For more information on geology, hydrology, climate and vegetation please refer to Angius et al. (2011).

data are presented: municipality, locality, date, collector, as they are given on the original label. Additionally, number of individuals and sex are provided. For records from outside the Iglesiente also the province is reported as given on the original label. If not specified otherwise, the specimens are deposited dry in bags in the collection of the CNBFVR. The order of the species listed and the nomenclature follow Utzeri (1995) except for Brachythemis impartita for which we follow Dijkstra & Matushkina (2009). Literature data, critically revised (see also Bucciarelli et al. 1983), are listed in chronological order and the material examined is listed in alphabetical order of municipality.

MATERIAL AND METHODS ABBREVIATIONS

Staff of the Centro Nazionale per lo Studio e la Conservazione della Biodiversità Forestale, "Bosco Fontana" of Verona (CNBFVR) collected dragonflies as part of a large entomological campaign using sweep nets, aquatic nets, a Malaise trap and hand collection of exuviae on the following dates: 5.VI.2004, 6.VI.2004, 8.VI.2004, 9.VI.2004, 12.VI.2004, 13.VI.2004, 21.IX.2004, 22.IX.2004, 24.IX.2004, 25.IX.2004, 20.III.2006, 22.III.2006, 19.V.2006, 20.V.2006, 21.V.2006, 22.V.2006, 23.V.2006, 10.VII.2006, 11.VII.2006, 12.VII.2006, 14.VII.2006, 16.VII.2006, 18.VII.2006, 6.IX.2006, 7.IX.2006, 8.IX.2006, 9.IX.2006, 10.IX.2006, 11.IX.2006, 12.IX.2006, 9.XI.2006, 10.XI.2006, 14.XI.2006, 15.XI.2006, 23.VI.2007, 5.IX.2007, 7.IX.2007. A Malaise trap was exposed at Lake Siuru (fig. 1) during 12–17.VII.2006, and 20–23.V.2006. Further details on the collection methods and sites are reported in Bardiani (2011). Cerretti et al. (2009) provided further results of the entomological campaign. P. Leo collected dragonflies in the Iglesiente on the following dates: 14.VI.1992, 21.V.1995, 31.V.1999, 3.VI.1999, 9.VI.2001, 5.VI.2003, 5.IX.2004, 2.VI.2005, 9.VI.2005, 20.VII.2005, 11.IX.2005, 12.IX.2005, 24.V.2006, 21.V.2007. For seven species, which are rare or uncommon in Sardinia, data are reported from outside the Iglesiente area. This material was collected on various occasions by a number of people: Lestes macrostigma (Eversmann, 1836) (Lestidae), Sympecma fusca (Van der Linden, 1820) (Lestidae), Coenagrion scitulum (Rambur, 1842) (Coenagrionidae), Lindenia tetraphylla (Van der Linden, 1825) (Gomphidae), Orthetrum nitidinerve (Selys, 1841) (Libellulidae), Orthetrum trinacria (Selys, 1841) (Libellulidae) and Brachy themis impartita (Karsch, 1890) (Libellulidae). DISCUSSION AND OBSERVATIONS The data collected confirm the presence of 14 species of dragonflies in the Iglesiente and add 12 further species to the known fauna of this area. Coenagrion scitu lum, known for the study area only from two records (D'Antonio 1989; Holuša 2008), and Trithemis kir byi (Holuša 2008) were not confirmed. A total of 28 Odonata species (11 Zygoptera and 17 Anisoptera) are now known from the Iglesiente. Given the low habitat diversity and the small extension of the area investigated, which covers only 5% of Sardinia, this must be considered a relatively high number of species. The number of odonate species collected from the Iglesiente represents 2/3 of the species (69% of the Zygoptera and 65% of the Anisoptera) known for Sardinia (Boudot et al. 2009). The following species were found to be common in the study area: Calopteryx haemorrhoidalis, Ischnura

Dragonflies of Iglesiente (SW Sardinia) and additional records of rare or poorly known species from Sardinia (Odonata)

genei, Boyeria irene, Anax imperator and Orthetrum anceps, which were also regarded as generally common in Sardinia by Bucciarelli et al. (1983). Some selected species are discussed below. Lestes macrostigma In Europe this species occurs mainly in the Mediterranean area, where it is highly localized (Dijkstra & Lewington 2006) and is considered "Vulnerable" (Kalk man et al. 2010). For Sardinia recent records have been published from coastal localities of the provinces of Sassari, Nuoro and Oristano (Bucciarelli et al. 1983; Utzeri & Cobolli 1993). For the province of Cagliari only a single record existed (Quartu Sant'Elena) from the late 18th century (Nielsen 1940), which was confirmed during the research presented here. Generally this species is considered to live in coastal ponds which are more or less saline (e.g. Aguesse 1968; Bucciarelli et al. 1983; Carchini 1983). The specimens collected at Giara di Gesturi are of particular interest as this site, a freshwater pond on a plateau at an altitude of 570 m, is 40 km from the sea.

ed here are the first for southern Sardinia and concern a large biotope where numerous L. tetraphylla have been observed regularly. This habitat consists of the rivers Rio Cixerri and Rio Flumini Mannu near the town of Assemini, where the two rivers run parallel, at a distance of approximately 200 m, before flowing into the "Stagno di Cagliari". During the summer and during dry periods the flow of both rivers is very slow. Lindenia tetraphylla was relatively common on the river banks from the mouth of both rivers to approximately 2.5 km upstream. During July and August numerous individuals have been observed. The males were mainly seen perched on the ground along the paths which follow the rivers. The females were more frequently found on plants growing on the river banks. On 17.VIII.1993 a single female was observed while ovipositing amongst the vegetation near the river bank of Rio Cixerri, where the water was almost stagnant. On the same day a single female, caught at Rio Flumini Mannu, released approximately 80 eggs. The eggs were transferred into water from the river. However, only 6 larvae hatched (fig. 3), two of which moulted once.

Sympecma fusca This species seems rare in Sardinia and was known for the province of Cagliari only from some historic collections (see Bucciarelli et al. 1983). Coenagrion scitulum C. scitulum is known only from a few localities in Sardinia (Nielsen 1940; Bucciarelli et al. 1983; D'Antonio 1989; D'Aguilar et al. 1990; Holuša 2008) and has been found on some of the minor islands as well (Utzeri & Cobolli 1993). Its presence in the Iglesiente could not be confirmed (e.g. D'Antonio 1989; Holuša 2008). Lindenia tetraphylla In Europe this species occurs in the Mediterranean, where it is very localized and is considered "Vulnerable" (Kalkman et al. 2010). For Tuscany and for Sardinia populations have recently been reported (Terzani 2002; Utzeri et al. 2006). Only four sites were known from Sardinia, three from the province of Sassari: Rio Mannu, near Chilivani, where a small colony existed (Castellani 1951; D'Aguilar et al. 1990), which however became extinct when the biotope was destroyed (Galletti 1978; Bucciarelli et al. 1983); Stagno di Platamona (Galletti 1978; D'Aguilar et al. 1990); Olbia, Rio Padrongianus, where a single specimen was observed (Bucciarelli et al. 1983). More recently the species was collected near Santa Giusta in the province of Oristano (Utzeri et al. 2006). The data report-

Orthetrum nitidinerve This species, a West-Mediterranean endemic (Boudot et al. 2009), was known from only a few localities in Sardinia, mainly from old records (see Bucciarelli et al. 1983; Utzeri & D'Antonio 2005). In the Iglesiente a single specimen was found. The apparent rarity might partly be explained by the specific behaviour of this species, which makes sightings and collecting less likely than in other dragonflies, as it 251

returns to the streams only late in the afternoon (Bucciarelli et al. 1983). Orthetrum trinacria This species is common in tropical Africa and parts of south-west Asia (Dijkstra & Lewington 2006). Bucciarelli (1977) was the first to report O. trinacria for Sardinia, where it was known from three localities: province of Sassari (Stagno di Platamona), province of Oristano (dintorni Tramatza) and province of Cagliari (Stagno Colostrai) (Bucciarelli 1977; Bucciarelli et al. 1983). Records exist also for two of the minor islands of Sardinia (Isola dell'Asinara and Isola di San Pietro) (Utzeri 1990; Utzeri & Cobolli 1993, 1996). The data provided here confirm the continued presence of O. trinacria in Sardinia where it seems to prefer coastal water bodies. Trithemis kirbyi This species, which has not been found by the authors, is widespread in Africa (Boudot et al. 2009), and was collected for first time in Europe in June 2003 (Holuša 2008) along the river Oridda (Iglesiente). In 2007 the species was again seen in Europe (Spain, Andalucia) (Chelmick & Pickess 2008). These records have been interpreted as the first steps for a potential expansion of its range to southern Europe (Boudot et al. 2009). Brachythemis impartita Recently B. leucosticta (Burmeister, 1839) has been split into two species (Dijkstra & Matushkina 2009). The specimens collected in Sardinia clearly belong to the species B. impartita, as do the European specimens examined by Dijkstra & Matushkina (2009). Thus, also the record of B. leucosticta from the province of Carbonia-Iglesias reported by Crucitti et al. (1981) is here interpreted as belonging to B. impartita. This species is abundant and widespread in tropical Africa. Expanding northwards, it has in recent decades colonised Sardinia (Dijkstra

& Lewington 2006). So far only a single record of B. impartita had been published for Sardinia: Tratalias (Carbonia-Iglesias prov.), L. di M. Pranu, 25.VIII.1979, leg. P. Crucitti, 1 female (Crucitti et al. 1981). The data presented here are therefore an important confirmation of its continued presence in Sardinia. B. impartita seems to be relatively common, at least in the western part of the island. It seems likely that the colonization originating from North Africa is closely linked to the recent climate change. The observations at the localities listed above suggest that B. impartita is now a resident species in Sardinia. The specimens collected often derive from large populations where also freshly emerged individuals have been observed. In the localities of Assemini and Rio Cixerri-Rio Flumini Mannu, B. impartita was the most abundant dragonfly species in July, August and September, with hundreds of observed individuals. All females which were caught are heteromorphs, with a light coloured body and without dark bands on the wings, as has been observed in Sicilian populations (Galletti et al. 1987).
