Chaplin, who suffered insomnia during this period of his life, began to use a phonographic dictating machine beside his bed to record comedic ideas and sequences that came to him, a practice that would remain with him for years. In his autobiography, Chaplin describes his comedic formula as a gag every fifteen seconds! Chaplin’s directing was unique: he acted out the parts of all the actors as he wished them to be played, down to the slightest hand gesture or eye brow movement. By 1916, just two years after appearing in his first motion picture, Chaplin had become the most famous entertainer in the world and was offered the largest salary ever extended to a motion picture star: $670,000 for a single year’s work in a landmark contract with Lone Star-Mutual Corporation to make twelve two-reel comedies over eighteen months. Many film historians believe this remarkable series of films to be Chaplin’s best works for their blend of comedy, pathos and social commentary. “Fulfilling my contract with Mutual was, I suppose, the happiest period of my life. I was light and unencumbered and twenty-seven years old, with fabulous prospects and a friendly, glamorous world before me.” – Charles Chaplin
