Rhythmic organisation (patterning) assumes three different but overlapping morphological fields: a) Numerical — cyclic distribution Time-units are independent of accent or meter, rhythmic patterning is gradually extended by augmentation. Repetition is however undermined by a modality of micro-tempi which generate irrational rhythmic proportions and function to maximise transient phase. b) Analogic — deterministic distribution A complex retrograde of the previous field, it involves a continuous diminution of timeunits. Actual or suggested stress creates a proliferation of disturbance patterns, an attempt to render time palpable, a pre-determined mass of ties, syncopations, irrational rhythms, counter accents etc. c) Relational — statistical distribution Here form is exploited as a statistical grouping and re-grouping of both spatial and timbral mass.
