“The little festival is all grown up!”

Mamers en Mars how it works ? Mamers en Mars is 17-year labour of love that has established itself as THE film event of Sarthe and the number three event in the Pays de la Loire region, drawing over 4,000 spectators every year. Through its selection of never-before-seen short and featurelength films, the festival offers a panorama of both the present and future of European cinematography…all at the heart of a rural city boasting a population of 6,000, where passion for cinema is an integral part of the art de vivre. Since its creation, Mamers en Mars has revealed a number of films, from Peter’s Friends and Métisse (Café au Lait) in 1993 to The Secret Life of Words and Brudermord (Fratricide) in 2006. Mamers is also where talented artists like Mathieu Kassovitz, François Ozon, Anne Fontaine, Sébastien Lifshitz, Stéphane Brizé, Gaël Morel, Stephan Guérin-Tillé, Lidia Bobrova and Julio Medem made their directing debuts. Mamers en Mars embraces young actors (Benoît Magimel, Julie Gayet, Mathilde Seigner, Elodie Bouchez, Jalil Lespert, etc.) and seasoned talents alike (Carole Bouquet, Dominique Blanc, Michel Duchaussoy, Bernadette Lafont, Claire Nebout, Nicole Croisille, etc.). Over the weekend, festival-goers from all walks of life come together in an authentic Italian-style theatre to bask in the warm, welcoming atmosphere that has made the reputation of the Mamers festival, where spectators mingle with professionals and where everyone is there to celebrate the Seventh Art in good spirits.

Mamers en Mars the little extras… E Beyond the competition: something for everyone

In addition to the film competition, the Mamers en Mars programme offers: - sneak previews of feature-length films at the opening and closing screenings - 6 to 8 free theme-based screenings in a second theatre, including a selection of regional short films, a feature-length film chosen together with the AIDES association (for the fight against AIDS), another feature-length film on the environment, a selection of films from a given country, etc. - 2 pre-festival screenings in Le Mans and Sées (Orne département), putting the spotlight on a particular director or actor - 7 free screenings for school-age children (from pre-school through secondary school) in Mamers and La Ferté-Bernard - 1 special pre-festival screening in the priory of Vivoin, following a workshop organized with professionals. E In addition to the films

As the film capital of Sarthe, Mamers at festival-time marches to the beat of the Seventh Art. With the benefit of cinematic professionals surrounding them throughout the festival, pupils in the film programme at the Mamers secondary school put together a TV programme on the event, under the conditions of a real television production. The programme is later broadcast on the Sarthe public access channel, Canal 8. Renowned professionals pitch in to lead several workshops open to the public, based on themes related to professions in the film industry (sound, visuals, screenwriting, directing, etc.).

Mamers en Mars the little extras… E Big films at small prices

The Mamers en Mars festival offers affordable prices so that all festival-goers may enjoy the event, with special weekend package deals and subscription cards for all budgets. And that's not even counting the many free screenings… E The real film festival

Over the whole weekend, the Mamers reception hall, housed in the same building as the cinema, transforms by night into a unique venue for unforgettable festivities that are laid back and fun for all. E A truly cinematic backdrop

Every year, the festival organizers make it a point of honour to provide an exceptional, unrivalled decor that plunges the spectators into a new world. E The glamour treatment

After Le Monde illustrator, Serguei, after the most celebrated artist of the moment, André, this year the decade's most glamorous illustrator, Stéphane Manel, has agreed to design the poster for the festival's 17th edition. This young artist, who knows better than anyone how to bring the sexiest, most mysterious women to life (on paper, that is), has already illustrated disk jackets for major recording artists (Daft Punk, Dimitri from Paris, etc.). He has also worked for top international fashion magazines and prestigious brand names. His reputation precedes him, and his participation in the Mamers en Mars film festival is a great honour for the organizers. www.stephanemanel.com

Mamers en Mars in support of a good cause

E MAMERS EN MARS contributes to the fight against AIDS

For more than 15 years, the organizers of the Mamers en Mars film festival have been contributing to the fight against AIDS, in partnership with the French association AIDES. AIDES is universally acknowledged for its work in the fields of information, prevention and assistance to AIDS sufferers. Each year, the festival offers a free screening followed by a debate on the topic of AIDS, in cooperation with the AIDES association. In addition, preventive actions are also undertaken over the course of the festival, such as the distribution of free condoms, and at the end of the festival, part of the proceeds from the event go to the Maine-Anjou chapter of AIDES.

Mamers en Mars promotion Each year, Mamers en Mars goes all out to promote the festival, together with its local and national sponsors.
